1BACHELOR NURSING ASSIGNMENT
Description
In the given video, the interaction between a nurse and the patient has been shown in
which, the nurse comes to the ward to check the vital signs of the patient. The further situation
has been presented in the following section.
In the scenario, a nurse and a patient is visible and in that the nurse had cane to check
vital sign of the patient. The nurses utilizes the time to build a conversation and normalize the
patient and asks about the duration of his stay and how he is feeling. In this situation, there were
no one else in that room. He uses this little time to determine the nervousness of the patient
regarding his health. In the final section, the nurse informs the patient that all his vital signs are
normal and he will share the information with the physician.
in this situation, the nurse seems to have proper knowledge of the NMBA or Nursing and
Midwifery Board of Australia standards and as per the guidelines was able to present and follow
the professional cod e of conduct while communication with the patient. Besides these, the nurse
was able to comply with the Nursing Competency Assessment Schedule standard 2, as tis
schedule focuses on the professional and therapeutic engagement between patient and
nurse(ohsu.edu, 2018). After the completion of the vital sign assessment, the nurse shook hands
with the patients and informed that all the vital signs are normal and under control.
Feelings
After the commencement of the video, the first thing I noticed was the clinical set up and
the hospital attire worn by the patient. In this clinical setting hospital beds, hospital table chair
was visible and the patient was sitting stably on the chair for the nurse to come and assess his

vital signs. In the video, I observed that the patient was understanding the medical terms and
processes and was responding positively to the nurse and the process. Further, I observe the
nurse and patient having a laugh together that determined that the patient was emotionally stable
and was supportive to the care process. From this situation, I understood that the patient was
aware of the care process and had trust on the care system hence, he supported the nurse and the
process without any hesitation, which was mentioned in the NMBA standards.
From the starting of the video, when the nurse introduced himself to the student and
informed the patient his purpose of visit that is checking the vital signs, the attitude and behavior
of the nurse seemed very genuine and friendly to the patient. The positive attitude of the nurse
was able to create a therapeutic relationship with the patient and it showed that the primary
concern of the nurse was to make the patient conformable while checking his vital signs. Further,
I noticed the nurse listening to the patient and their conversation carefully. Hence, at the end of
the video, I came to the observation that building a therapeutic and professional relationship was
the primary aspect of care related strategy implemented by the nurse and in the course, he was
able to comply with the standard 2 of the NMBA and the NCAS guidelines to build a rapport
with the patient.
Evaluation
After evaluation, I came to the point that in the entire overall scenario, the nurse was able
to comply with the NMBA guidelines with justified code of conduct and professional practice.
The first thing which effects the evaluation is the nurse’s ability to develop a string bonding
within a shorter span of time and to the extent that the patient was able to share a laugh with him.
The second evolutionary point was the positive points present in the assessment process, due to

which commencement of a friendly and beneficial relation between the patient and the nurse.
There were several instances that helped the nurse to gain the confidence of the patient such as
starting a warm conversation, informing him about the vital sign related process, the result of the
vital signs which was important for the nurse to gain confidence of the patient. The nurse
maintained dignity of the patient, conversed through eye contact and answered the questions
honestly. Hence, in my opinion, the nurse was able to comply with the NMBA guidelines and
hence, his attempt of creating bond with the patient was successful.
Despite these there were few negative aspects of the nurse’s personality that had a little
chance to affect the patient’s mental stability. In the video I observed that when the patient was
asking about the result of vital sign, due to higher involvement within the task, the nurse replied
to the patients answer with a blank pause of a minute. Whereas, the NMBA guidelines determine
that while communicating with the patient, a proactive approach should be maintained so that
effective communication can be maintained (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2018).
Analysis
While analysis, it should be mentioned that in the video, there were several important
aspects that helped to create a better and string relationship with the patient, such as, an effective
communication strategy and use of proper language, attitude and respect and dignity (Admi et
al., 2015). From starting of the conversation, where the nurse asked patient behavior, to the
listening ability of the patient while conducting crucial sign assessment, the nurse was able to
maintain a helpful and friendly conversation with the patient (Sweet et al., 2012). Despite of this
positive signs, several moments limited the depth and reach of the process such as the late replies
of the nurse on few questions, hence, excess involvement of the nurse in patient condition was

not appropriate and affected patient’s condition. Therefore, as per me, the nurse was able to
comply with the NMBA process (Wang et al., 2015).
Conclusion
There are several researchers who has mentioned the importance of effective
communication to build a relationship with patient so that they can implement the benefit of their
relation in the therapeutic care for the patient. Through the process of showing compassion,
courtesy, listening ability and sincerity the relationship between patient and the doctor can be
enhanced (Wiechula et al., 2016). Absence of the effective communication is responsible for the
decrease in the patient outcome and hence, Wang et al., (2012) determined that effective
communication is important for the patient improvement. Further, to determine the congruence
of NMBA standards to that of the plan of care, trust, honesty, focus, and compassion which is
important for the effective communication and effective care.
Action plan
As per my thinking, it is important to develop cultural competency so that therapeutic
relationship can be managed. For the proper development of such effective communication
goals, they should be provided with training, orientation, on job training. This will help to create
and develop listening ability, developing an impression on the patient with positive attitude,
comfortable engagement with the patient and acknowledging the patient through proper
processing. This will help the nurse and the patient to develop a communication and they will be
able to involve in the process as they both will work towards the same goal, improving the
patient condition.
