US-Mexico border: Outcries of discontent prevail in Nogales

A person named Louis Torretto, residing in Louisiana, claimed that they had to move out of
Nogales, Arizona where he and his family had resided for over a decade, just for the sake of
safety of his 8-year old son. The townsmen of the small border city of Nogales, Arizona have
made their opinions clear regarding the lethal walls that have been built in the city, along the
US-Mexico border. The walls have been made up of lethal concertina wires which have been
deemed unsafe by the locales, especially for the children who play around in the areas, or for
those kids who simply return from school passing by the side of the border walls. “It is a
weaponry that can slice through the skin of any innocent coming in contact with it”, added
Torretto. These walls had been ordered in 1918 by Felix B. Peñaloza, the then mayor of
Nogales, Mexico, to ensure that movement between Arizona and Mexican parts of Nogales,
could be kept under a better check by security forces. However, it is the Arizona part of
Nogales now who have recently expressed their discontent over the walls. The outcries in
Nogales, Arizona have worsened so much in the recent times that the mayor of the city, Sen.
Arturo Garino has himself pleaded to President Trump to take the walls down as a measure of
containing the discontent of the locales and also for their safety. However, the former has
turned down the requests on the grounds of preventing illegal immigration from the other side
of the border.
Ironically, the people of the border city in Arizona complain of a constant threat to security as
a result of the lethal wires. “They’re all across, running through the city; across the narrow
lanes where kids to hang out. A little contact with these wires would mean terrible harm to
the body”, said Ariana Mozarc, a resident of Nogales. Some people claim that it is a threat to

their liberty and poses constant threat and fear in the minds of the people who pass by the
sides of these wires, through the narrow lanes of Nogales.
People of the city even bring up democracy in support for their arguments, and claim that a
government that refuses to consider the outcries and appeals of its citizens, is a government
unworthy of being called a democratic government. On being asked how a static fence can
pose so much of threat to the lives of the people of Nogales, a native named Marco Murello
responded by saying, “It is just not a fence.” He added by questioning, “How long can you do
to save your kids from it on a slim lane?”
The government still has not responded to any of these pleas from the people of Nogales, and
furthermore talks between Sen. Garino and President Trump have come to a halt as of now.
The government will considering the outcries of Nogales, Arizona, even if at the cost of state
security, is an unlikely scenario as of now.
