Importance of Non-Verbal Communication
The objective of this essay is to explain details about the need, objective and significance of non-
verbal communication in the course of communication. Alike the verbal communication, non-
verbal communication is also a process that helps a person in letting other person understand the
things that they are trying to explain. The report highlights the information about the kinds of
non-verbal communication, their roles, and different aspects along with relationship with
communication.
There are different types of non-verbal communication present in the environment with the help
of which a person interacts with other person in the environment. Humour, body language, eye
contact, facial expression, symbol, visual communication etc. are some type of non-verbal
communication present in the environment that are used to elaborate the perspective and
opinions of a person in the business environment. Facial expression helps in understand that how
the individual communicating is sensing with initiating communication (Burgoon, Guerrero, and
Floyd 2016). The facial expression defines that whether the person is happy or sad or anxious
while talking to other person in the environment. Further, body language and gestures also acts
as a type of non-verbal communication that assists the verbal communication in the environment.
For instance, while giving a presentation in front of board members, the body language and
gestures helps in understanding the depth of the words. The gesture helps in understanding that
there is presence of informal or formal communication between two people (Neill 2017).
Coming up to next aspect of non-verbal communication that is role of non-verbal communication
in communication process, this type of communication process increases the efficiency of
normal communication in the environment. Considering a situation where a person is joking in
the environment without giving any facial expression or body gestures, then nobody will
understand the joke and neither will they laugh at the joke. Therefore, concluding the statements,
the facts should be justified that the non-verbal communication provides efficacy to the verbal
communication and both together initiate effective communication in the marketplace. It is not
vital to show the feelings through words as many times, gestures are also enough to
communicate between two people (Remland 2016). Sharing speech is not important to
communicate as non-verbal communication can easily help other person to understand that what
the first person is trying to explain. The body of a person is designed in such a way that they

initiate both type of communication together. Facial expressions, eye contact, spaces etc. defines
the communication between two people (Phutela 2015).
Further, it should be noted that haptics, kinesics and proxemics are the three different aspects
defined for the process of non-verbal communication in the external corporate environment.
These three aspects talk about specific type of non-verbal communication in the environment.
Proxemics is the type of non-verbal communication that explains the spaces shared by two
people with initiate communication in the environment. These inviolable distances between two
people explain the type of relationship shared between two individuals. This process explains the
interpersonal relationship and level of comfortability between two people. A manager and
employee maintain a specific distance while interacting with each other in the business setup
while that gap reduces if a mother interacts with their child. Further, haptics explains the process
of touching other person while initiating communication in the business environment. Lovers
talk while touching each other so as to show their love and affection to each other, while
business partners shake hands while interacting with each other so as to show respect and formal
relationship between each other in the business environment (Brook, and Servátka 2016).
This aspect of non-verbal communication upsurge the value of the verbal communication
because touch helps in building a bond between two people. Third piece of non-verbal
communication is kinesics that talks about body movement and the learning of facial expressions
of a person. People communicate while possessing several expressions on their face and by
moving hands and body as well. This type of non-verbal communication comes under kinesics
that explains the mind-set and the mood of the other person while implementing communication
in the environment. Hyperactive behaviour, frown eyebrows shows disagreement of the person
towards the certain activity in the environment. The other person can easily judge the rejection of
the first person even before saying because of this aspect of non-verbal communication initiated
by them (Hans, and Hans 2015).
Further, it should be noted that non-verbal communication shares a mutual relationship with the
verbal communication that is speaking and listening to one other in the environment. The non-
verbal communication helps the individual in accepting the things better and getting to know
things that a being is not able to say through words. Non-verbal communication helps the
understanding that what the other individual is sensing while speaking in the situation. Body

language of a person can help the other individual in accepting that whether the other being is
lying of what they are speaking (Bonaccio, et. al., 2016). Thus, it should be noted that
communication becomes effective only when there is presence of both verbal and non-verbal
communication in the setting.
Lastly, it should be concluded that listening process become more effective with non-verbal
communication. Nowadays people believe that communication involve speaking but listening
also plays a major role in implementing effective verbal communication. Elimination of non-
verbal communication can reduce the competence of speaking and listening in the environment.
As elimination of this process can confuse the other person that what they are trying to say is
sarcastic, or true, whether they are joking or are serious, whether they are sad or happy (Darics
2017). Thus, it should be noted that non-verbal communication affects the process of
communication in various ways. Therefore, it is important to note that both types of
communication together achieve great understanding and mutual bond between people, as
implementation of one sort of communication can misguide the other individual in the
environmental setting.
