Nonverbal communication plays an essential role in any conversation. Individuals who are
aware of nonverbal actions during conversations can more effectively interpret what is
being communicated.
Part 1
Look at the interactions between the individuals in the following photos and interpret what
you think is being expressed through nonverbal communication. Using about 75 words per
response, describe the nonverbal cues that lead you to these interpretations.
What is being said nonverbally by each
person?
The non-verbal communication from the
gentleman shows that he wants to keep a
distance from the lady. He also wants to keep
off conversation since he does not give any eye
contact and seems like he wants to walk away.
Waving of the hand is a gesture that describes
he is done and doesn't wish to further
communication. The lady's left-hand gesture
show she doesn't understand why the man does
not want to communicate. Her right-hand holds
the man indicating a persuasive gesture

If he is waiting for a job interview, what
impression do you think he is going to make?
The first impression that the man will make is
that of being tired of waiting. Lack of interest
will also emerge as doubt will be taking a better
part of the moment. He is most likely to be rude
for being kept waiting for long. He also would
express himself in a way that he wants the
interview to be conducted within a short time
since he is tired of waiting for too long. He will
also be irritated by the incompetence of the
people concerned with the interview.

positioning?
The woman on the right seems interested in the
information being given. Her communication
skills show that she is a good listener and is
also willing to give all the time possible for the
speaker to deliver their information. She seems
settled and calm and from her facial expression
the information is interesting. She also seems
attentive which encourages the speaker to
continue speaking. The lady is also holding a
pen an indication that she is taking note of the
information being given.

1. Which of the images demonstrates an interpersonal communication exchange? How
can you tell?
Interpersonal communication exchange involves four primary forms of communication
which are listening; verbal, nonverbal, and written communication. The first image is
demonstrating an interpersonal communication exchange from the lady's side, which shows is
verbally communicating. The lady also has a nonverbal communication expression from her
gestures. She seems to ask for more explanation and understanding of the situation which why
the man doesn't want to listen. She is also ready to listen as an interpersonal communication
exchange involves listening. The hand gesture is nonverbal communication which the lady uses
to express her need for more information.
The third image is also demonstrating an interpersonal communication exchange. This is
shown by the listening skill from the lady on the right side. Interpersonal communication
exchange involves listening and nonverbal communication in this image (Piyush, et al., 2015).
The lady on the right is directly looking at the speaker with an expression that she is listening,
and also interested in what she is being told. The image also shows that the lady has a pen in her

2. What types of interpersonal communication are being displayed in the images?
Why?
There are three types of interpersonal communication visible on the images as mentioned
above. They include verbal, nonverbal, and listening (Joseph, 2013). Verbal communication is
evident in the first image because the lady's mouth shows that she is speaking. Verbal
communication mostly goes hand in hand with nonverbal communication which in this image
shows the hand gestures from the lady. The man's mouth is open, an indication that he is
speaking to the lady despite the absence of eye contact. In the first image, there is evidence of
verbal communication from the lady and the man. It can be seen that each of them is uttering
something to explain themselves to one another.
The third image displays listening and nonverbal communication. The lady on the right
is listening, which is described by the way she is looking at the speaker with a lot of interest
(Zarrabi, 2016). Her facial expressions indicate non-verbal communication that she wants to hear
more of what is being said. The lady seems patient and calm, indicating she is ready to listen as
long as the speaker is giving information. There is also written communication which is evidence

John F. Kennedy was expressing his interest in seeing all human beings cooperate to elevate
each other in their position. He meant that everyone goes through the struggle to prosper, but
their achievement is not for their benefit alone but their fellow countrymen also. The quote also
implies that success is like a web, which means that along the pathway to success, one meets
various people with different talents, knowledge, and skills which put them in the spotlight.
Some of the helpers will be your enemies who come intending to cause failure, but the strategy

Martin Luther King Jr. was addressing the black people's need for freedom. He
emphasized that the black race should not in any way doubt that their freedom is impossible.
Martin Luther wanted the black people to believe that they were part and parcel of the great
constitution, and they should embrace every promise in it as their heritage. He purposed to
encourage black people to fight for their justice and not give up until they obtain it. He urged the
black people to work towards benefiting from the riches of their nation and not focus on non-
inclusiveness of the fundamental rights such as health, shelter, education, and political stand.

The Power of Words
The power of words means that the words spoken can change a person or a
situation (Capraro & Vanzo, 2018). Words can change the way an individual perceives a
situation or another person. The impact of the power of words can be as a result of individuals
falling into it intentionally or unintentionally. The power of words is also based on how each
person understands the delivered information. One word can mean different things to various
people and can be influenced by expectations or the environment they are in. Personally, the
words affect me depending on the situation I am in my expectations from a particular person or
event. The speaker of the phrase also determines how the words touch me (Adam, et al., 2019). If
the speaker is a role model or a mentor, the words they speak will positively impact my life
because I believe in what they say. They may not necessarily demand that I implement what they
say, but I would be careful not to be ignorant and miss a point that could have changed my life.
The use of nonverbal messages reinforces the meaning and the intention of the word spoken
(Britton, 2018). Since effective communication involves eye contact, the expression received
from the speaker determines or strengthens the deeper meaning of the information given. One
also needs to understand the speaker very well to avoid misinterpretation of the speech or the
conversation in place (Dwi & Lailatul, 2019).
