Communication is one of the vital parts of the role of a nurse. Theory suggests argue and
emphasizes therapeutic communication as one of the key parts of nursing and focuses over the
practices of nursing. Amoah et al. (2019) suggest that therapeutic communication includes some
of the major components like listening, caring, acceptance, authenticity and respect.
Communication tends to facilitate the growth and development of a therapeutic relation among
patients and then hours but can also create barriers among them. In line with the specific aspects
of therapeutic communication related to health assessment, this assignment will demonstrate the
skills of critical thinking in line with gives reflective cycle as a framework for analysing the
importance of the, therapeutic communication and health interview under health assessment
context.
Stage 1
Description
Therapeutic communication is a specific technical skills which is major design for building trust
with someone unknown and also for conducting health interview. Towards achievement of
therapeutic communication, it is important for the nurse to effectively demonstrate empathy
since it is a building block of the skill for effective interaction with patients. According to
Pazargadi et al., (2015) the advancement of the emotional and physical wellbeing of patient. I
adopted unlearned the skills of therapeutic communication by undergoing my nursing trainings
where I was instructed to use a variety of techniques for accomplishing the nursing goals towards
enabling communication with patient. Caring is the essence of a relationship which I considered
to be the forefront towards determination of my therapeutic communication and action.

Feelings
In this section of the Gibbs reflective cycle I will share my feelings and reactions while I was
learning the skill of therapeutic communication in my nursing training. Being a nurse I have to
attend the therapeutic nature of the interactions that take place with the patient. Apart from
caring and showing respect to the patient, the nursing training that I attended instructed as
effective behaviour management since it is an essential part of the correctional healthcare setting.
Throughout the process of my nursing training, I felt nice understanding of three elements of
behaviour management that a nurse needs to understand. This includes the triggering event,
behaviour and the behavior consequences.
Stage 3
Evaluation
Therapeutic communication in nursing is one of the fundamental components and a complex
concert. The nursing training that I receive regarding the skill of therapeutic communication and
health interviews has been essential for the need to improve the quality of my interaction with
patients as well as perform several duties and address the diverse needs of the patient.
Therapeutic communication for me is an essential skill that I have to learn for increasing my
participation in-patient care as well as accelerating the recovery by means of educating them.
According to my personal decide which skill is essential and has been a beneficial technique that
provided me opportunity towards impact and computing psychological health get techniques that
I got to know by the means of an effective feedback system. Being a part of a holistic and
patient-centered system of care, the skill of therapeutic communication covers several aspects of
psychological and physical requirements. Being a nurse, skill of therapeutic communication has

been the foundation of professional practice as well as and educational skill set that has been
beneficial for me to change the data among patient and students of nursing for helping the
patience to overcome distress and adapt to and unchangeable health conditions.

Critical analysis
Inline to the Kornhaber et al., (2016), the techniques of therapeutic communication that have
been used by the nurse towards collecting health interviews and attending the patient includes
skills such as active listening, focusing, uses of open-ended questions, exploration, reflection,
paraphrasing, acknowledgment of the health challenges. On the other hand the process of health
interview that includes both close-ended and open-ended questions helps in the collection of
patient health history. Health interview is associated with clinical reasoning, critical thinking as
well as clinical judgment where nurses demonstrate best kills towards the assessment of
psychological and psychosocial health across the lifespan of the patient.

Conclusion
Health interview and therapeutic skills are the essential components in the field of nursing
(O'Toole, 2016). As a nursing professional, skills that I learned in my nursing training process
helped me to collect the history of patient’s data and engage in effective communication with the
patient. These beneficial for me to come up with the challenges as well as the unchangeable
conditions within the context health interview conducted via therapeutic communication. I
personally believe that health interview and therapeutic communication are the two essential

tools for the provision of health facilities that the nurses provide to the patient by the means of
empathy and respect in interpersonal boundaries.

Action plan
However there are several series and skill sets within the context of health interview and
therapeutic communication that I need to improve in my nursing career.
Specific - My goal is to demonstrate competency in collecting data by health interviews
regarding sanitation facilities of the inpatients
Measurable – I will successfully collect data from three to four patients regarding their sanitation
and bathing with no error before my instructor
Attainable – This is an attainable gaol since I have studied the therapeutic communication and
health interview videos as well as followed all the practical nursing training. I am a hands on
learner and I will follow the footsteps of my instructor.
Relevant – This goal is relevant since it is the expectation within the nursing role to engage in
effective therapeutic communication to conduct health interviews.
Time-based - I plan to achieve by week 6.
I need to acquire the necessary skills of the collection of data specifically person-centered health
interviews by means of effective therapeutic communication true evaluation and training before
engaging with inpatients. The action plan that I need to follow includes the target of maintaining
clinical competence through theoretical and clinical education. Besides this listening should also
