INTRODUCTION
Numeracy is the methodology for simplifying the concepts, factors and other given
information in numbering world. It included the fundamental & comprehensive operations of
arithmetic criteria such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. It consists of
knowledge, skills & other conduct of nature that to be needed in wide range of mathematical
operations and tactics (Coetzee and Matthee, 2021). In this particular reporting, gathering of all
the fractions value with different activities occurrence and data & excel based questions is to be
solved. By covering all the numeracy aspect, we can create value with the usage of different
functionality.
PART-1
Question 1: Define the terms (a) numerator, (b) denominator.
Solution:
A. Numerator: When the numbers are given in the form of (a/b) then the 'a' value is
known as numerator. The number which placed at above the fraction bar is represented as
numerators of the fraction value which shown the partial parts of the whole amount.
For example: There are 5 chocolates in a box. 1 chocolate is given to one boy. That
means the fraction of boy is (1 / 5) where 1 is the numerator. In other words, he will get one-fifth
of the chocolates.
B. Denominator: When the numbers are given in the form of (a/b) then the 'b' value is
known as denominator. The number which placed at below the fraction bar is represented as
denominators of the fraction value which shows the whole amount (Del Río, and et.al., 2017).
For example: There are 5 chocolates in a box. So 5 is the whole part of the 1/5 fraction
value.
Question 2: Identify simplest forms of 24/40 and 18/42.
Solution: Steps of calculating simple factors:
1. Find out the HCF factor of the numerator and denominator.
2. Divide both the segments by common value.
3. It reduces the value from highest to lowest.
Document Page
Calculation:
I. 24 / 40:
a. Highest Common factor of 24 / 40 is 8.
b. 24 / 8 = 3 & 40 / 8 = 5.
c. Reduced Fraction = 3 / 5.
Therefore, 24 / 40 simplified form is 3 / 5.
II. 18 / 42:
a. Highest Common factor of 18 / 42 is 6.
b. 18 / 6 = 3 & 42 / 6 = 7.
c. Reduced Fraction = 3 / 7.
Therefore, 18 / 42 simplified form is 3 / 7.
Question 3:
A. Determine the fractions of 2/3, 3/4 and 5/6 as equal value with a denominator of 12.
Solution: Multiply both numerator & denominator by the same number which will turn the value
of denominator into 12 like below:
1. 2 / 3: 2*4 / 3*4 = 8 / 12.
2. 3 / 4: 3*3 / 4*3 = 9 / 12.
3. 5 / 6: 5*2 / 6*2 = 10 / 12.
Therefore, the equivalent fraction of the 2/3, 3/4 and 5/6 is 8/12, 9/12 and 10/12.
B. A library contains 60,000 books. 14,000 are of business subject, 22,000 are of healthcare and
12,000 on psychology & law. What percentage of the library’s books is on computing, if
computing books is two-thirds of the remainder?
Solution:
Total Number of books in library = 60000
1. Business subject books = 14000
2. Healthcare subject = 22000
3. Psychology & Law = 12000

Total of these three subjects are 48000 (14000+22000+12000)
→ Remaining books = 60000 – 48000 = 12000
→ Computing books = 2 /3 of remaining
= 2/3 * 12000 = 8000
→ % of Computing Books = [8000 / 60000 *100] = 13.33 %.
Therefore, % of Computing Books in the library = 13.33 %.
Question 4: A sports shop in Manchester is doing a sale on some merchandise. Liz hears about it
and goes to make a purchase of two pairs of running shoes. She gives the sales attendant in the
store three crisp £50 notes and is given change of £10.50. What is the price of each pair of
running shoes? Calculate the following.
Solution: Let's assume pair of shoes = x
Liz gives the amount = 3 * £50 = £150
Change return = £10.50
→ Price of 2 pair of shoes: 2x + 10.50 = 150
→ 2x = 150 – 10.50
→ 2x = 139.50
→ x = 139.50 / 2 = £69.75
Therefore, price of each pair of running shoes = £69.75
Question 5:
A. What is 240.50 * 19.54? Answer in 2 significant figures.
Solution: From the above scenario, the numbering consists of 4 decimal values which can be
written as 240.50 * 19.54 = 4699.3700 But,
240.50 * 19.54 = 4699.37 ( Consider only 2 significant values)
B. Write the number 52100 as a power of 10.
Solution: It is known as scientific quotations which is comprehensive in nature at the smallest
decimal number value.
The number 52100 as power 10 is = 5.21 * 10^4

Question 6:
A. New gym is offering a promotional offer of 30% discount to those who sign up in the first
month. Patty and her 2 siblings take advantage of the offer and sign up for total amount of £210.
What were the total savings made?
Solution: Total discounting offer = 30 %
Patty & her 2 siblings take advantage of offer = 100 – 30 % = 70%
→ Sign up amount of joining = £210
If the £210 value is equal to 70% then total saving amount is:
→ £210 / 70 * 30 = £90.
Total Savings made by them = £90.
B. Explain the average savings per person.
Solution:
Total number of people = 3
Saving done by per person = £90 / 3 = £30.
The Average savings per person = £30.
Question 7: Determine the following:
A. 3/4 - 7/9 + 2/3
Solution:
→ 3 /4 – 7 /9 + 2 / 3
→ Taken LCM of 4, 9 and 3 which is 36.
→ Value converting = [(27 – 28 + 24) / 36]
→ [( -1 + 24) / 36] = 23 / 36
3 /4 – 7 /9 + 2 / 3 = 23 / 36.

Question 8: 90 men and 60 women were asked if they had watched the latest ‘Expendables’ B-
movie. Altogether 3/5 of the people said Yes. 3/10 of the women said Yes. What percentage of
the men said No? Explain.
Solution:
Total number of Men = 90
Total number of Women = 60
Total Person = 90+60=150
→ Total People Said 'Yes': 150 * 3 / 5 = 90
→ Total Women Said 'Yes': 60 * 3 / 10 = 18
→ Total Men Said 'Yes': people said 'Yes' – Women said 'Yes'
: 90 – 18 = 72
→ Total Number of Men Said 'No': 90 – 72 = 18
→ % of Men said 'No' = 18 / 90 *100 = 20%.
Men said 'No' percentage = 20 %.
