The article “New graduate nurses' experiences in their first year of practice” by Vicki Parker,
Michelle Giles, Gena Lantry and Margaret McMillan, the authors examined and tried to gain and
overview of experiences and perception of new nursing graduates during their first year of
entering clinical workforce. The authors in this study surveyed the nursing graduates in NSW
hospitals through online survey to examine their experiences for the transformation in their
practice work setting. Parker et al (2012), stated that transformation to work in nursing is one of
main concern since the transformation to tertiary care since 1980. They identified that the ability
of the new graduate nurses to cope with new transformation at workplace is influenced by the
work place dynamics and the constant changes in environment. The four highly qualified and
educated authors have contributed in framing this article to find new interpretations in the field
of clinical practice. The researchers were successful in identifying the gaps resent in literature
that indicated that no articles or studies before have been conducted to analyse the nurses
experiences for the workplace transformation, they also stated that this aspect of nurses life is
important to be studied as it provides base for their experience development, sustainability and
competency for the practice. The survey was conducted and around 300 nurses participated who
were serving as registered nurses during their first year of placement in district hospital and
NSW. The sample was broadly representative in nature but the size of the sample was not
enough to generalize the findings. The survey included various diverse questions influenced
from the literature that included demographic detail, current employment, nature of initial
recruitment, nature of transition, career aspiration, experiences of transition and confidence in
practice as well job satisfaction (Parker et al., 2012). Yet one of the major limitations of this
study was that the invitation to participate went out online and focused only those nurses who
were recruited as host and present at the moment that included an inherent bias in the study. The
bias towards hospital administered new graduate nurses was also inevitable. Generally this
article will be useful for the new nursing graduates and the nursing fraternity to analyse the
influence of workplace transformation on the practice and competency of the newly graduate
nurses. It will also help promote changes in the nursing field in order to promote healthy
environment for easy transformation of the freshers. It will overall benefit the government,
health and social care sector and the nursing graduates.
