1INCLUSION OF NURSES IN SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT LIFE CYCLE
A System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is a standard framework for project
management that help in improving the quality of information and health outcome in a
healthcare setting. It involve gathering, exploration, testing, designing, installation,
integration, implementation and maintenance of data through a series of steps in a systematic
manner in order to improve the information system. A software-based system utilize a
number of models to operate in a healthcare system. According to Louis (2011), the process
of system development start by understanding the need of the clients and go through a series
of steps including the support of all stakeholders of the organization to develop a product. In
my healthcare organization, there was a requirement of a new health information technology
system (HITS) that is responsible for identification of its effect on clinical and administrative
operations (Digital.ahrq.gov, 2019). Thus, investigation and analysis was done on the current
system available in the market. The role of nurse is found to be critical in each stage of SDLC
while purchasing and implementing a new system. The process of gathering information
cannot be effective with them as nurses spend most of the time with patient, thus, they are the
most reliable source of data (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). In the exploration, testing and
design, the support of nurses allow in understanding the requirement of the new technology
and thus, effective designing. Installation, integration and implementation of the new HITS
cannot be successful without involvement of nurses because within the organization, the
nurses will be using it and hindrance from them may affect the successful implementation.
On a long-term basis, maintenance involve supporting the system in an effective manner to
maximize health outcome which is directly linked with nurses who are responsible for
enhancing the quality of life in the setting.
