In nursing practice, caring is a feeling and displaying concern and compassion for others;
exhibiting or having empathy on patient. Caring is a sensation that not only relies on feeling, but
also comprises of some action. Caring is considered as human behavior including affective,
psychological and cognitive response along with administrative skills by which professional
caring is also expressed. The terms related to care and caring is extensively used to address the
characteristic effort and value of nursing. The dynamic spirit of nursing is caring and it is the
essential component of holistic practice of nursing. Caring in nursing is important as it provides a
favorable environment in which the process can occur (Edvardsson, Watt & Pearce, 2017). In the
absence of proper care, the patient may feel distressed that can delay in recovery from illness.
This paper focuses on a case study where nursing students perform some actions providing care
then how these behaviors related to 6C’s of nursing caring and finally description of a nursing
theory based on caring and how it can be incorporated in the patient caring.
Section 1
The caring behaviors are defined as actions that are associated with well-being of a
patient such as comforting, sensitivity, honesty, attentive listening and non-judgmental
acceptance. The main focus of the nurses’ is to provide comfort to the patient (Smith & Parker,
2015). The first focus is to identify the requirements of the patients and deliver the care
according to their unique needs. Various types of caring behaviors are present in nursing
practice. Among them, one is showing professional compassion to patients and their family.
Nurses performed this by maintaining thorough and regular interactions with the patients. The
next consideration is prioritizing the patient’s welfare. For this, the nurses include a systematic
approach of care that involves physical, psychological and spiritual aspects (Noveno, 2018). The
nurses established a specific care plan to provide optimum care to the patient. Another care

behavior includes promoting comfort to the patients. The nurses should pay the attention on
patients’ physical discomfort as well as mental condition. The nurses should also ensure the
patient safety and rights. By maintaining effective communication with the patient, the nurses
also take care of the patient (Kourkouta & Papathanasiou, 2014). They may follow different
verbal or non-verbal techniques to understand the patient problem and also satisfy the patient.
The nurses also respect to all ethnicities and value their own beliefs, attitudes and rituals. This
action can be considered as caring behaviors towards the patients. In the case study video of Mr.
Abbas, the nursing students followed some caring practices to provide comfort to him. After
taking him to the emergency department, the nursing student first checked the Glasgow Coma
Scale (GCS) of him. Then the students examined his vital signs such as blood pressure,
respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation. They also evaluated ALOC (Altered Level of
Consciousness). Following this event, they diagnose the patient with Transient Ischemic Attack.
The students prescribed medication that is for preventing nausea and vomiting tendency. The
students then examined his hand strength if there is any neurological disturbance. Then other
student had checked his pupillary response that is PEARL (Pupils Equal and Reactive to Light).
After performing this practice, the patient is taken for medical assessment and planning unit.
Since the patient’s first language was not English, the nursing students tried their best to
understand his words and took help some non-verbal communication like a picture. This will
help the patient to point out his necessity. The students also provide comfort by pulling the
curtain that the patient was seeking. The nurses were always there to solve his all requirements.
Section 2
The 6C’s of nursing practice includes competence, compassion, confidence, commitment,
comportment and conscience. Compassion is defined as the nurse efforts to understand the

patient’s current experience such as pain, discomfort, or unwillingness to alive and the
experiences of family. It also termed as patient dignity, empathy and respect (Sinclair et al. 2017)
. A nurse must perform a key role to promote, introduce or maintain the human connectedness
with the patient to exhibit the best therapeutic outcomes for them. In this scenario, the nurses do
not maintain the connection with Mr, Abbas continuously at first. They responded to the patient
a bit later. However, after that, they were thoroughly connected with him. They also respected
his requirement by pulling the curtain and sustained the dignity of the patient. Competence is
demonstrated by hands-on technical car, the knowledge of patients’ condition. By this care, the
nurse assesses the patients’ condition, needs and responses (Fukada, 2018). In the case study, the
nursing students have knowledge how to treat the patient. They have also knowledge of
prescribing medicine. In nursing practice, confidence is described as the attitude, quality of the
nurses that can demonstrate truthfulness and exhibit positive attitude to the family. This, in turn,
will actually help the patient to acquire the self-confidence again. In this study, the nursing
students were quite deficit of that. As a result, they show mixed signals while communicating
with the patient. The next C that is considered in nursing care is conscience. It is defined as the
nurse should display conscientiousness always what is done for the patient and their family. The
nurse should understand the patient entirely or completely at the critical position of the patient
and then the nurse should maintain the conscience that is a state of moral awareness
(Zamanzadeh, 2015). It actually the knowledge of ethical issue that involves the helps to decide
the right or wrong being committed by the nurse and performing action on the basis of this
knowledge. In the case of Mr. Abbas, the nurses are fulfilling the patient needs after considering
the ethical fact. One example of this includes the pulling of curtain to meet the patients’ needs.
The nurse has performed to maintain the patient dignity and respect. Another C in caring practice

involves commitment. The commitment demonstrates the consistency of providing support to the
patient and their family during the entire care-process (Asiri, 2016). It does not mean that the
nurse should always present physically during this process. Nonetheless, it is a promise that is
experienced by both the client and nurse. In this scenario, the nurse also maintained this
commitment with the patient. Here, they also pay attention to the patient for a long time to
understand the requirement of the patient. The last caring process includes comportment. It is
essential for a nurse to behave as professional and truthful to the patient and their family. All the
attributes such as eye contact, body language, communication should be considered in this
practice. In this scenario, the nurse maintained those common attribute like eye contact, body
language. However, they felt quite difficulties in communication. Since the patient did not
understand the English language, they took help non-verbal communication and this led quite
mixed gesture that was not clearly understood.
Section 3
A number of nursing theories involve the core concept of caring. One such theory, the
Theory of Human Caring by Leininger describes caring assistive, facilitative or supportive action
towards or for other individual groups with estimated needs or evidence to improve human
condition or lifeway (Jeffreys, 2015). In this theory, the author has some assumptions about
human caring. Some includes every nursing care situation has transcultural caring behaviours,
needs and implications, caring acts and processes are essential for human development, growth
and survival, caring had biophysical, psychological, cultural, social and environmental
dimensions which can be studied and practiced to provide holistic care to people (Blasdell,
2017). One key idea that is of interest is every nursing care situation has transcultural caring
behaviors, requirements and implications. This is described as the professional caring as

behaviors which can be learnt culturally derived, cognitively, techniques, patterns or processes.
This, in turn, will assist family, a person, or community to enhance or improve or retain the
healthy condition or life style. Central idea of this theory depicts that human caring is the key
component but the behaviors, expressions, cultural, social and psychological pattern vary among
cultures (Douglas et al., 2014). Since the human being cannot exist away from the social and
cultural background it is necessary to implement a culturally diverse nursing care. This idea
could be incorporated into nursing care by educating or initiating training programs among the
nurses which can help to understand the people’s values, language and beliefs more effectively
(Aliakbari et al., 2015). Therefore, the caring process would be more beneficial and effective for
entire mankind.
From the above paper it can be inferred that, the nurses followed rules and regulations for
treating the patient. The nurses were much aware of the 6C’s of caring like compassion,
competence, conscience, commitment, comportment, confidence. They took care of the patient
attentively. In most of the caring process, they fulfilled the criteria of treating or providing care
to the patient. Although, they could not communicate well with the patient but they tried their
best. Since, the patients’ first language was not English they took help of non-verbal
communication to understand the requirement of the patient. They maintained the self-esteem
and self-respect of the patient by pulling the curtain. They also performed proper assessment
process to evaluate the patient condition. Therefore, they are able to provide him the person-
centered care. The nursing caring theory applicable for this case study in future would be
implementation of culturally diverse health care process so that nurses can understand the
patients’ own view, belief and language properly.
