2.4.2 Case Study: Plan of Care
1a) The urgent risk area identified in the case study is “the development of mental health
problems”. It is observed that Munny, a 45-years old Cambodian man becomes less
communicative at home when he heard that his employer was not satisfied with his work, and it
may result in losing his job. However, it has been analyzed that when individuals become less
communicative, they are less likely to express their feelings. They deal with complex situations
on their own without sharing their perspectives with others (Olfson, 2016). Therefore, this may
result in an increased risk of mental health problems.
1b) Psychosocial intervention is a nursing intervention that will help in addressing the urgent risk
area that is “the development of mental health problems in Munny”. This particular intervention
will be carried out by the nurses at home. The intervention will be carried out by using non-
medicinal means to change and enhance their relationships and behaviors with the society and
family members (Lyon & Koerner, 2016). As a result, counselling session will be held to
understand the perspective of Munny. The purpose of the intervention is to help Munny to
communicate with others in a usual manner and return into a healthy state.
2a) From the case study, it has been analyzed that as Munny has become less communicative
with others which can lead to depression that is regarded as a major mental health concern.
Depression is a serious and common mental illness that may negatively affect how a person
feels, thinks and behaves. It may cause certain feelings such as loss of interest in daily activities
and a feeling of sadness. It can also result in the occurrence of various physical and emotional
problems and minimizes the ability of a person to function at home and work.

2b) A cognitive-behavioral intervention is a nursing intervention that will help in dealing with
depression, a mental health concern related to Munny. This intervention will be used by adopting
cognitive therapy to understand the behavior, feelings and thoughts of Munny. It will be used
when an individual deals with depression and unusual behavior while interacting with others
(Green, Yarborough, Polen, Janoff & Yarborough, 2015). This particular intervention will be
used as it provides a mental tool kit that will help Munny to prevent himself from moving
towards depression. This will also help in avoiding the occurrence of negative thoughts, poor
self-esteem that leads to depression.
3. Based on the case study, it is observed that the two ethical issues that need to be considered by
the nurses or midwives while assisting Munny are “recognizing causative environmental factors”
and “identifying new modes of treatment”. It is analyzed that while treating a patient who
possesses a risk of increasing mental health problems, the nurses must consider and identify the
environmental factors that may create an adverse effect on the person (Fernie, Kollmann &
Brown, 2015). The nurses or midwives must identify innovative ways of treatment to help
individuals to deal with their severe mental health concerns.
