Introduction
In healthcare services, nurses can are accessible everywhere starting from patient
screenings, nursing stations and most importantly with patients while they are undergoing
medical tests or treatments or at the bedside. The primary role of the nurses is on the forefronts
of patient care (Felton & Royal, 2015). Thus nursing students who are preparing for clinical
placements must obtain adequate knowledge of effective communication to patients and
supervisors while working as a healthcare professional (Vizeshfar et al., 2016).
SMART Goals
As patients tend to make impression of the nurses’ on the basis of their level of communication
with them, the impression nurses are likely to pass to patients will leverage their contentment and
consequently their healthcare output (Foronda, MacWilliams & McArthur, 2016). Thus, the set
goals which have been purposed to be accomplished must be developed in a SMART way:
The set of goals need to be specific. As prospective nursing professionals in pre-clinical
practice, nurses with high level of shyness and complexities must aim to improve their
communication skills to establish smooth and comprehensive communication base with patients
and supervisors belonging to diverse cultural backgrounds. For seeking for the key to a quality
patient encounter, nurses will apply BATHE (Background, Affect, Trouble, Handling, and
Empathy) method which will have open-ended conversations with patients particularly to
successfully connect with patients and increase their comfort level while they are undergoing
tumultuous care encounter (Akturan et al., 2017). Due to increasing level of misinterpretation
while dealing with patients of diverse ethnic backgrounds of Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander
and other Australian people to avoid any form of uncertainty and disorder in providing efficient

healthcare services, nurses will be exchanging feedbacks and opinions from respective
supervisors and colleagues and also enrol in leadership training workshops to enhance their skills
in these particular areas.
The goal is measurable. Reading journals related to BATHE method and attending local
community events will facilitate the level of understanding to overcome nervousness and
complexities while communicating with patients and co-workers. The exchange of feedbacks and
genuine reviews from colleagues would help in understand the progress and further assist in
releasing the position within the team. Additionally, regular leadership development sessions
along with motivational classes would also provide prospective nurses with effective
management and awareness of their competencies and recognize level of skills which can be
attainable.
Goal can be attained. Nurses can attain these goals with the help of advanced
technology which will help them to obtain access to various blogs, evidenced based studies and
videos of BATHE method related to effective communication. Meanwhile, efficiently attending
motivational classes and leadership development courses will help them improve their
professional as well as social interactive abilities.
The goal is identified to be relevant as these leadership training courses and visiting
local community events will help them in understanding characteristics of diverse individuals.
Alongside, watching videos of BATHE method will provide significant avenues of learning
effective ways to use open-ended conversations with patients and can value fundamental reason
for patients’ concerns and doubts about the treatment procedures.
Lastly, the time frame of the goals will be three months.
