AI Summary
This report examines the similarities between Simone Roach's 6 Cs theory (Compassion, Consciousness, Competence, Confidence, Commitment, and Comportment) and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Code of Conduct for nurses. It highlights how both frameworks emphasize compassionate and competent care, aligning with ethical and professional standards. The report discusses the importance of compassion, cultural sensitivity, and effective communication, as well as the need for competence in decision-making, training, and supervision. It references key principles from the Code of Conduct and illustrates how they support the 6 Cs, ultimately aiming to improve patient care, promote ethical conduct, and enhance the overall quality of nursing practice. The report concludes by emphasizing the interconnectedness of Roach's theory and the Code of Conduct in fostering a patient-centered approach to healthcare.

Rationale
Nurses are the backbone of healthcare sectors as they are the first line health care providers
as they take care of patients and maintain the communication between the doctors and the
patient’s family members and community members. They also play vital role in advocacy
and education during the treatment of a patient(Zhang, 2019). A nurse helps not only in
the clinical treatment of the patient but also take part in the therapeutic and humanistic
care by giving them emotional, psychological and social support with the help of behavioral
therapy. They play most important role in the end of life care or palliative care as they have
to take most of the responsibility in care provision. There are different nursing theories which
are related to the improvement of skills in nurses and betterment of care provision. One of
the most accepted nursing theory is Roach’s 6C’s Theory which is promoted by Simone
Roach in 1992 with a theological approach towards care provision. The components of this
theory are the 6Cs such as Compassion, Consciousness, Competence, Confidence,
Commitment and Comportment(which was added later)( Moffa, 2018). This theory was firstly
consist of 5 components and the Last “C”-“comportment ” was added in 2004. On the
contrary, Code Of Conduct for Nurse is introduced by NMBA for maintaining the professional
principles and values during treating a patient. The Codes of conduct apply to all areas of
care provision for executing their duties. There are different domains which are principles of
care provisions. The domains are about legal compliances in the treatment , safe and
effective treatment, professional integrity and regulations regarding health and wellbeing.
There are 7 codes of conducts for nurses and these codes are aimed to improve cultural
competence, health and wellbeing of patient and legal compliance in the treatment.
There are similarities between Roach’s 6 C’s theory and NMBA code of conducts for the nurses
in terms of their objectives towards better care provision to the patients. The similarities
will be discussed below.
In the similarity one is focused on compassionate care provision to the
patient. According to Roach ; nurses should act as a compassionate person during the
treatment of patients. Nurses should be empathetic towards the patient to some extent to
deliver the patient centered care. Compassionate nature of nurse help the patient to rely on
her or him. Moreover, in principle 3 of the Code of Conducts, nurses are instructed to
maintain cultural practice with the respectful behavior during treating patient. The principle
3 promotes culturally safe and respectful behavior during treatment of the patient by
maintaining their privacy and confidentiality. Sub clause of principle 3 is focused on effective
communication (Arnold & Boggs, 2019). Compassion is the key component of the effective
communication. positive professional relationship is formed among patient and nurses as
per respectful and compassionate communication(Chambers & Ryder,2018).If the patient
does not feel kindness and respects from the nurses , it is impossible for them to rely on
health professionals in their critical phase of life(www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au.,2020).
Additionally professional behaviors of nurses as per the code of conducts must contain
compassionate approach . Professional behaviors of nurses covers different attributes such as
conflicts of interests and financial arrangements and gifts which would be avoided in a
professional aspect by a compassionate persons only. Therefore, nurses must be
compassionate to maintain professional behavior and avoid any additional financial benefits.
Therapeutic communication involves sensitive behavior toward patient and engages with them
by using the skills and knowledge(Kourakos, Fradelos, Papathanasiou, Saridi & Kafkia, 2018).
Second component of Roach’s theory is competence which is an integral part
of nursing. Therefore different principles of Code of Conduct will help the nurses to show
competence towards their profession(www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au. ,2020). Principle
regarding patient centered practice emphasized on competent behaviors of the nurses
towards to the patients. Decision making requires competence along with training,
education, authorization and qualification as every decisions related to patient’s treatment
is vital and crucial for their lives(Courtney, Daniel & Abraham,2019). Shared decision
making also very common in care provision especially in the person centered care.
Therefore, the nurses must have the quality of competence which will help to educate and
train the patients with their family members. The registered nurses should have competent
knowledge so that they can provide training and supervise enrolled and student
nurses(Yang & Sim, 2016). Lack of competence will lead to clinical complication of patient
during treatment. Supervision of enrolled nurses and student will be compromised due to
lack of competence. Competence not only covered the skills and knowledge but also in
critical thinking and motivating the patients (Carvalho et al.,2017). Competence will help the
nurses to become more confident in their profession. If a nurse is not confident , he or she
cannot support the patients with safe and secure environments with quality care provision.
