Walden University Nursing Research: Database and Article Review

This assignment explores the use of research databases, specifically CINAHL and Google Scholar, for identifying peer-reviewed articles relevant to nursing practice. The student analyzed an article on horizontal violence among nurses, highlighting the databases' accessibility and limitations, such as paywalls for full-text articles. The assignment emphasizes the importance of critical thinking and research skills in nursing, aligning with the nursing process. The student reflects on the databases' utility and recommends them while acknowledging the need for critical evaluation of research findings. Horizontal violence among nurses is one common occurrence in health organizations,
and I desire to dig deeper and establish the possible causes, consequences, and remedies. This
is the reason I chose the article "Nurses’ perceptions of horizontal violence. Global
qualitative nursing research," published by Taylor (Taylor,2016). While searching for this
article utilized or instead used two databases, which include the Cumulative Index of Nursing
and Allied Heath literature abbreviated CINAHL and google scholar. The two databases
could be accessed through the Walden library (Walden University Library, n. d.). In as much
as the two databases would allow free access to most of the articles, I established that the
article was only present or available as an Abstract. Secondly, I realized that I was expected
to make some payments to access the full article, especially on the Google Scholar database.
It might inconvenience a student or colleague who does not have money but needs the
Itarticle.
Nevertheless, I feel that the two databases are useful, and I would recommend them to
most of my colleagues. It is because they offer a wide array of articles. Furthermore, one can
customize the search to match their time frame. If, for example, one needs an article
published from 2015, it can be achieved by simply typing the year in the dialogue box
situated on the left. However, after obtaining the paper, I did realize that one has to employ
critical thinking to come up with a new document (Shellenbarger, 2016). Since research is
part of the nursing process, each nursing student should be we versed with the reliable
database as we as research analysis skills.
