Question 1. Code One- Conflicting Beliefs.
 In this case scenario, John has been in a coma in the intensive care unit(ICU) for several months
at which his family has requested all life support including feeding and breathing tubes to be
withdrawn and allows John to die. Carmela is upset as such beliefs conflict with her values.
 Taking care of patients with different beliefs like in the case scenario can make a nurse be less
committed due to emotions and attitudes.
 Nurses are obligated not to harm the patient and so removing feeding and breathing tube is
illegal.
 Patients should be allowed to make choices by themselves and through health professional’s
guidelines since some family members may not have the patient's interests at heart.
 There was no given doctor's guideline that the patient will not survive hence removing
breathing and feeding tube is not patient-centered but family-centered.
 Conflicting beliefs may hinder continuous and quality care due to the patient's nurse arguments
and disagreements.
Code Four- Communication and Collaboration.
 In this case scenario, Malcolm's newly employed nurse is having difficulties in taking care of
schizophrenia patients who have hallucinations and delusions.
 Communicating with patients with delusions and hallucinations may be difficult and dangerous
as such patients can attack nurses.
 Other health care professionals may be busy attending to other patients and thus collaboration
may be ineffective and not timely.
 Not all senior staff are always willing to collaborate with a newly registered nurse.

 Working with other health care professionals is a key strategy to ensure patients receive quality
care and thus collaboration should start before a nurse attempts to treat the patient alone.

 The first principle will guide my nursing practice by enabling me to be accountable, in regard to,
respecting patients' culture, goals, values, and identity. Additionally, I will be able to understand
that caring for the patient should be free of discrimination and not judgemental. For instance, a
hospital may have patients with different religions like Christianity and Islamic. The first
principle will help me treat the patients equally, respect their religions and cultures and don't
impose personal biases and beliefs on patients.
 The second principle will guide me in making sure I work with other nurses to promote patients'
well-being as the basic functions of a nurse is to take care of patients. For instance, this
principle will guide me in providing timely and clear information to the patients as needed,
respect patients' rights, acknowledge patients' rights to ask concerns and advocate for them
during care.
 The third principle is relevant to my nursing practice as it guides me in providing safe, quality
and competent care that will boost patients' trust. For instance, this principle will guide me in
using appropriate judgment, skills, and knowledge when assessing patients' needs in such a way
patients will feel they have been treated safely and by a well-trained and skilled nurse.
