Ethical values are a major determinant of the quality of care given to a patient. They
affect not only the quality but also the nature of the care given. Privacy and confidentiality are
some of the values applicable to James’ case. Doctors at the hospital in which he is admitted
have a responsibility of ensuring that they do not disclose the patient’s illness as instructed.
Adherence to this value might affect the ability of family members to make appropriate decisions
regarding his condition. Autonomy is also applicable in the scenario. This relates to the patient’s
right to decide on their healthcare. This principle limits the use of alternative care options to
improve the condition of the patient. Healthcare providers are also required to be honest.
Honesty mandates doctors at the facility to tell the truth to the patient and members of the family.
Professional competence is also applicable in the case. This value mandates caregiver to use their
skills, knowledge and communications for the benefit of the patient and the family members.

The provision of MAID services must be in accordance with legal requirements. With
regard to the process, a nurse may undertake activities, services or nursing care aimed at
supporting the individual patient and their family. For example a nurse may educate a client
about their care and provide answers to any questions raised by them. Secondly, a nurse might
also offer the necessary support to the family of the patient before and after the procedure. A
nurse is also allowed to insert an intravenous line used in the administration of MAID procedure
patients to end their lives

Conscientious objection entails the refusal by a nurse to offer medical assistance for the
dying based on personal beliefs, values or religious beliefs. However, in order to exercise her
