Choose a legislator on the state or federal level who is also a nurse and discuss the
importance of the legislator/nurse's role as advocate for improving health care delivery.
What specific bills has the legislator/nurse sponsored or supported that have influenced
health care.
The legislature makes laws that administers the day to day responsibilities of a nurse and these
laws can affect the nurses in some negative ways . In case of a nurse legislator, they can
approach their job from the perspective of a nurse, catering to the interest of the profession itself
as well as the interest of the patients. They are capable to understand the problems that the nurses
face it day to day setting of the healthcare environment. They are normally well aware of the
actual scenario of a country and are very well aware of the challenges faced by the health care
organisation like the nurse staffing, compliance to hospitals to the healthcare standards
(O'Rourke et al., 2017).
One of the example of a nurse legislator is Mary Ann Dailey, who is a registered nurse,
is also a Republican member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Some of the
examples of her bill is to allow certain prescriptive privilege for the nurse practitioners belonging
to Pennsylvania as well as a bill which will regulate the unauthorized practice of the unlicensed
assistive professionals. Lois Capps, who is a democrat from California have worked for the
advanced legislation like Nurse Reinvestment Act that would address the shortage of the nurses
(Kearney-Nunnery, 2015).
