This report delves into the realm of nursing homes, exploring their environment, patient care, and overall satisfaction levels. The research, driven by personal and professional experiences, identifies key issues such as feelings of isolation, limited personal space, and challenges related to cultural shifts within these facilities. The study employs a survey-based methodology, gathering insights from residents through a questionnaire designed to gauge their opinions on various aspects of nursing home life, including cleanliness, staff behavior, and the availability of activities. The results of the survey are analyzed using statistical measures to determine satisfaction levels. Furthermore, the report proposes several solutions to improve the quality of life for nursing home residents, such as limiting control, encouraging family engagement, organizing engaging activities, and planning outings. The report concludes by emphasizing the importance of creating a more welcoming and comfortable environment for elderly residents, thereby enhancing their well-being and overall experience within nursing homes.

Assignment
Slide2. Introduction
In this assignment, the healthcare industry, and particularly, the nursing homes services and their
effectiveness has been researched. The potential problems in this field have been identified and
efficient solutions have been ascertained after careful analysis. A systematic research has been
conducted by surveying some of the residents, and studying articles on related topics. The whole
functioning of healthcare industries have been progressing and transforming into more
innovative systems. Nursing homes or care centers for the elderly people who need some special
care. Generally, people who are moderately ill and need medical treatment assistance but not
severe enough to be admitted in hospitals are admitted to nursing homes. Some people enrol their
parents in nursing homes for proper care and assistance, when they are unable to manage
everything together. Such centres provide 24-7 assistance to ageing and disabled people. There
are professional nurses for this job. They also function like rehab centers for some people and
help in small illnesses or some emergency situations. In recent years, there have been several
advancements in types of nursing homes, which provide different types of services. But the main
question here is whether people feel nice and comfortable about living in nursing homes. This
assignment assists in finding out the answer ("Acknowledgement to Reviewers of Healthcare in
2019", 2020).
Slide3. Topic Selection
The topic selected for this assignment is Nursing homes can and should be beautiful and fun
places to live. It reflects the need for nursing homes to be more welcoming and truly home-like
for the people. Making such care centers more lively and comfortable will help the residents
unwind themselves, and recover quickly (Carlstedt, 2019).

Assignment
I have chosen this topic because firstly, I have worked as a nurse in a nursing home and I know
the functioning and situations of nursing homes these days; secondly, my mother is going to live
in one such nursing home any time soon. It is important for me to ensure that she is going to feel
comfortable and nice living there. I think it is important to identify whether the residents living
in nursing homes feel like home and spend some fun time there. Therefore, this topic interests
me (Boogaard et al., 2018).
Slide3. Topic alignment
The topic chosen perfectly aligns with my field of study. I have worked for a few years as a
nurse in care centres and the topic, therefore, comes under my sphere of studying. As under the
subject, the healthcare industry is growing and innovating rapidly these days. The sector of
nursing homes has also broadened in providing different facilities. The healthcare sector is wide
and there are several categories like hospitalization and nursing activities, preparing and
providing health management equipment and services. The biotech and pharmaceutical sciences
are a further classification of the healthcare study (de Boer et al., 2018).
Slide4. Problem Identification
The problem that we are going to address in our research is the opinion of the patients in a
nursing home regarding the environment of the nursing home and can it be a nice experience
staying at a nursing home away from family. We will also be discussing about the maintenance
of hygiene in a nursing home based on the reviews from the patients.
The problems, we will be discussing in the research are behaviours of the nurses, cleanliness and
hygiene, boredom of the patients, and the overall living conditions in the Nursing Home. The

research will try to bust some of the very common myths about nursing homes about its being an
unsafe place to stay with lots of restriction which gives it feel of a lockdown. We are going to
find out through surveys that whether the entertainment measures are taken serious care of or
not. The above research will also try to identify if the cost burden is too much on the patients or
not. Thus, this research will try to address any kind of problem or issue that might be faced by
those staying in nursing homes.
Slide5. Nursing homes issues
Despite the various efforts of nursing staff, nursing homes are not always the dream living place
for people. Many of the nursing homes undergo some or the other problem in making the
residents feel homely and nice. Some such problems are:
1. Feeling of isolation or loneliness - Sometimes, residents can feel like they have been left
alone and they may wish to return back to their normal lifestyle, leading to more
suffocation.
2. Minimized personal space and fixed work schedule - Not everyone likes to be interacting
in activities every time. They may get inadequate personal space and time living with so
many people under a fixed time schedule (Düzgün & Durmaz Akyol, 2017).
3. Differences between residents - They have to accommodate and adjust as per the people
coming from different occupations, who have different opinions, likes and dislikes,
leading to conflicts.
4. Cultural shifts - The nursing homes have their own functioning and living styles. Some
people might while some might not be able to resist such lifestyle changes.

Slide6. Making nursing homes a better place
Many nursing homes are, while many are becoming, very innovative in making nursing centres
more fun and beautiful to live in. Some of the ideas to make nursing homes a better place and
resolve problems are:
1. Limiting control - Residents should be made to feel like they are restrained and do not
have the freedom to live as per their own. Work schedules should not be forced on them.
2. Family engagement - Communicating and meeting with family members on a regular
basis is very important to make them feel loved and cared. They should not feel like they
have been forgotten. Nursing homes should arrange for different types of social visits
(like by NGOs) so that they do not feel isolated.
3. Organizing games, music and other such activities - The nursing home members should
be engaged in different games like a puzzle or share music and other activities as per the
residents’ hobby from cooking to art to books. Some nursing homes also like to pet
animals for creating a more playful and bright atmosphere. Even looking at old pictures,
or watching an old movie helps in reviving them.
4. Plan short trips - To ensure that the residents do not feel restricted, they should be taken
out on pleasure trips and small outings (Watson, 2016).

Slide7. Research Methodology
The research conducted by us is a survey based approach. We will be preparing a questionnaire
containing 10 questions as a part of this survey. The questionnaire will address the problems
identified above. Each of the questions will have 5 answers depending upon the level of
agreement or disagreement to it. Then we will summarize the result in a table where each
response is recorded. We will apply the central measures to the response to every question and
the response given by every participant (Zheng et al., 2017).
Then, pie charts and histograms will be made from these statistics acquired. Higher the value of
both the means, higher will be the satisfaction level of the participants with the nursing home.
The survey was conducted on site (pen and paper based) and around 20 people responded to the
survey (van der Zon et al., 2018).
Slide 8&9. Survey
In order to find out the residents’ opinions and feelings about living in nursing homes, a survey
was conducted. A sample of 20 residents is surveyed from a nursing centre. A questionnaire was
developed based on basic questions, to understand whether nursing homes are comfortable and
pleasurable to live in. Gathering the opinions of different members of the nursing home helped in
identifying a common pattern and fondness towards such places (Remizova & Rudnev, 2019).
Some of the survey questions were:
Q.1 Are nursing homes a comfortable place to live in?
Strongly Agree Neutral Disagree Strongly disagree
