1ROLE REFLECTION OF NURSES
Introduction
Nursing informatics is known to incorporate information sciences in nursing and computerize the
different aspects of healthcare in order to improve the patient outcomes and structure the
healthcare system better. Out of the nine major functional areas of nursing informatics, this paper
will focus on education and professional development. A nurse can successfully become a
knowledge builder by observing and learning the methods implemented by the doctors in
assessing a health issue and prescribing appropriate medications (Darvish, Bahramnezhad,
Keyhanian & Navidhamidi, 2014). Studies show that knowledge building is directly proportional
to the education and professional development of the nurses.
Discussions
According to nursing informatics, there are 4 roles a nurse can take on –
As a data gatherer, the nurse should:
efficiently keep a track on the patient’s symptoms and reaction to the medications
take a detailed note of the doctor’s suggestions and instructions
This will help boost the experience of the nurse and help train them to handle similar situations.
Thus, for example in cases where the patients have a combination of diseases, observing and
taking a detailed note of the patient-doctor interactions, might help the nurse assess and assist
another patient, suffering from similar issues.
As an information user, the nurses are supposed to:
analyze the data collected
implement them

2ROLE REFLECTION OF NURSES
This step helps the nurses gain a practical knowledge on the procedures and their outcomes and
thus aids in their educational and professional development. Thus, in case of tests, the nurses
might be able to assess the test results and give recommendations to the patients.
The role of a knowledge user would be to practically implement their understanding. The
healthcare sector has abundant nurses and this skill of a nurse is very important in emergency
cases, in the absence of doctors (Ann Dunn, 2017). They are able to provide the patient with the
necessary attention and medical care.
As a knowledge builder, the nurses require to:
examine, infer and compare the clinical information gathered
keep track of the trends and improvements made in clinical practices based on the
practical implementations
This role helps in increasing the experience and knowledge of the nurses and thus adds to their
overall educational and professional development.
Conclusions
In order to help in their educational and professional development, informatics nurses should
be able to nurture the following skills (Ann Dunn, 2017):
Good technical and computer operating skills
Ability to critical think, analyze, and solve problems
Excellent interpersonal skills
Project management skills
