Nursing as a profession needs skills that will let them work in a team and manage tasks
during medical emergencies. Leadership skills are an essential requirement in an efficient
nursing practice. However, certain factors can lead to the leaders in nursing feel powerless.
The major barriers that are found in an organizational culture, which leads to issues in
nursing leadership is cultural, ethical and managerial problems (Barkhordari-Sharifabad,
Ashktorab & Atashzadeh-Shoorideh, 2017). The cultural problems are the communication issues
and cultural beliefs that hinders the practice when dealing with patients. One of the aspects of
cultural problem is cultural competence that affects the satisfaction of patients when they find
their healthcare providers are from a different culture. The ethical problems are related to the
ethical distress, difference in moral grounds and when the ethical principles are not followed.
The basic principle of ethics in nursing is related to maximum benefit of the patient but when a
nurse is not obliging by that, it can obstruct the leadership of the nurse who is managing them.
Ethical leadership in a clinical setting varies from nurses to nurses and if they lack the power to
maintain a decorum then they can feel powerless. Managerial issues are when there is no sync in
the organizational structure and when the staffing is not adequate or capable enough to look after
a critical situation. The leader is unable to work with the team when they are not cooperative or
lack in discipline (Elliott et al., 2016).
Nurses should be prepared for such situations in their practice as it can affect their
leadership qualities and act as a barrier.
