Nursing leadership
Introduction
Conflict situation would be situated in the emergency department during emergencies
like cardiac arrest. These conflicts may arise due to the communication gap, weak decision-
making process, and inappropriate approaches of required treatment and care to the patient and
lack of required information about the situation to the team members and to the family of the
patient. Registered nurse (RN) would play a different role in the healthcare organization like a
manager, care provider, and educator. During the emergencies, many interactions would be done
between nurses, doctors, different members of the healthcare team and with the family members
of the patient where the chances of the conflicts arise. These conflicts became major issues in the
hospitals because these conflicts may lead to a negative environment in the hospitals and
demotivation in the nursing staff (Keer, Deschepper, Francke, Huyghens, & Bilsen, 2015).

Explanation of events leading conflict situation
Emergency department of healthcare would provide facilities of treatment and care for
emergencies like cardiac arrest. A 65 years old male patient has come to the hospital with having
symptoms of unconsciousness, lack of breathing, no pulse, and collapse. When he has come to
the hospital, I have situated as a registered nurse in the emergency department of that hospital.
He has suggested for ECG and cardiac computed tomography (CT) for diagnosing the exact
situation of his health. Then cardiac arrest has diagnosed during the ECG, and cardiac CT of the
patient (Herman, et al., 2016).
Doctors and nursing staff members have shared their responsibilities to provide treatment
and care to the patient to provide a positive result in the health of the patient. However, the
situation in the emergency department has gone changed due to the conflicts between doctors
and nursing staff members, inside the individuals of the nursing staff and the families of a patient
with nursing staff members. Communication gap, inappropriate approaches to deal with the
situation and insufficient information has led to these conflicts. Conflict situation between the
nursing staff and doctors have taken place due to the improper communication that has led to the
unclear decision passing and ambiguity of role to the nursing staff and provides
misunderstanding about required information about the patient treatment. It has led to low-
quality treatment and cares to the patient due to conflicts (Jerng, et al., 2017).
Due to poor leadership and management skills, RN has not able to provide a high quality
of decision-making process and poor communication has led to the misunderstanding during

anxiety to the family of the patient due to the fear of losing a patient. This has led to the conflict

the engagement of the doctors and nursing staff so that I have abled to engage with each other by

Conclusion
From the above discussion, I have concluded that the emergency department would have
to deal with different kind of emergencies like cardiac arrest. With the emergence of these
emergencies, many other diseases may take place so the emergency staff would have to deal with
the situation, which needed prior treatment and care. Registered nurses have play roles of leader,
manager and care provider to the nursing staff member during the emergencies. During these
situations, conflicts may take place between the doctors, nursing staff members, and the family
of the patient. These conflicts situations would take place due to the lack of communication
skills, management skills, inappropriate decision-making process and lack of required
information about the patient.
Therefore, registered nurses have to provide effective management, communication, and
leadership skills during the emergency to prevent conflicts and to provide positive results in the
health of the patient. For the positive results, they have to provide patient-centered holistic
nursing care approach so that they would be able to provide satisfaction to the patient. They have
to provide motivation and support to the patient to provide efficient treatment and care. They
would have to provide engagement between the doctors, nursing staff member and family of the
patient to provide effective communication. They would have to provide educational training and
campaign about the emergency so that they would be able to deal with similar situations without
conflicts. They have maintained engagement between the family of the patient and emergency
staff by providing effective communication and by building trust between them.
