1LEADERSHIP IN NURSING
Accountability Leadership Quality
Definition:
Accountability in leadership includes individual reliably delivering the commitments, and
shows that others can have trust on them. As per leadership, accountability includes taking
responsibilities for all the actions as well as the decisions that are taken and transforming those
outcomes to positive effort (Aziz et al. 2015). Accountability in an organization can be set with
the behavior and the decision making quality of the leaders and can set performance standard in
the working process.
Accountability in Nursing:
Accountability in clinical practice states taking responsibility of all the actions that are
taken and ensuring to do the activity that is asked to do always prioritizing the interest of the
patients. Working as a nurse states justifying the designation with set of sensible actions (Griffith
2015). The nurses included in the clinical practice should be aware of what they are doing and
they should be trained properly and they should work as per the plan that was agreed.
As per the case study,
Mavis Lopez being an unexperienced nurse in oral medication injected her patient with
oral medication as she was having difficulty in swallowing.
The nurse had not followed accountability and has denied the fact that death of the
patient cannot be charged as manslaughter.

Standards that can be applied:
As per the accountability practice used by the nurses in clinical practice, the clinic should
ensure safe staffing practice in their service. They should also provide delegate tasks to all the
licensed and the unlicensed employees and there should be adequate documentation and policies
for using the new technologies that are available in the clinics.
A nurse should not disclose the patient she is providing as that might violate the
Accountability act.
If professional standards are violated, then the nurse can be exposed and the healthcare
organization can also be exposed to liability and that might even result in losing the
licensure.
From the case stusy, can be said that Ms Lopez had breached the duty to look after Mrs.
Anderson and failed to follow proper practice (Kredo et al. 2016). This case describes the
fact of accountability that Ms. Lopez had not followed.
Tools provided to prevent Accountability:
There are three accountability that are followed in clinical practices. Those three
categories are financial, performance accountability and political accountability. Financial
accountability includes tracking as well as reporting the allocation, utilization as well as
disbursement of the financial resources that ate included in clinical practice. These are mainly
done by auditing tools, budgeting tools and accountability tools. Performance accountability
includes demonstrating as well as accounting performance (Semper et al. 2016). The field
application and for fine tuning includes tools that includes sharper observation that are related
with accountability enhancement. Tis helps in improving the poor health service and reform the
