INTRODUCTION
Leadership and management is the most important of any kind of organisation
either it is retailing or nursing. Leadership refers to an act which is related to influence
and motivate several people to do their efforts in same direction in order to achieve a
common goal. Whereas, management concerned with leading and directing a group of
people to meet the organisational goals by effectively using all the resources. This file is
based on National health care organisation which is indulging their business in providing
appropriate medical services to their people. This report will cover about the importance
of leadership and management in nursing care in order to provide higher quality care to
the people. This file is structured with various topics like usage of information technology
to ensure quality and patient safety, concept of delegation and key theoretical concept of
team working. The consideration of all these topics provide great benefits to the
organisation as it allows them in rendering effective medical care services to their
patients so that they can live a healthy and happier life.
MAIN BODY
Context
At the present world scenario, leadership and management emphasises as most
important aspects of the nursing industry. Leadership refers to the activities of a leader
which are operate by them in terms to motivate and influence a group of people in the
organisation. The leaders in NHS also give their focus on providing proper guidance to
their employees in order to render the higher medical services to their patients. Other,
management within the nursing refers to the activities of a manager with the motive of
improve patient care, eliminate duplication and helping patients. An effective leader
within the health services will be able to provide safe, higher quality and merciful care to
their patient. The main focus of them on hearing the patient voice at each level which
contains their experience, needs and feedbacks(Davies, Nathan and Clarke, 2012).
Other, proper management of every activity within the nursing services is essential in
order to maintain the proper flow of activities so that the organisation goal can be
attained easily. In order to achieve the organisational goals a leader need to give their
focus on making an effective team which articulate a clearly define vision within the

team and doing their efforts to achieve it. The importance of leadership and
management for NHS is given below:
Supporting employee development: An effective nurse managers able to
create healthy and balanced environment by giving the assurance of proper
availability of resources and guiding the new members so that they can adjust as
per their roles. As when a manger will motivates professional development then
nurses will do their more efforts in trying new things(Banerjee and et. al., 2017).
Assurance of safe environment: It is the most important part in which the
leaders and managers have huge significance as it is responsibility of them to
deliver safe care as per their set standards and prescript of the medical industry.
In this aspect, the managers and leaders of NHS has considered patients rights
and safeguarding as a priority so that they the safe environment can be created
for the patients. With the help of this they are also capable to monitor all nursing
team that they are rendering the safe services to the patient or not(Ferrell and et.
al., 2016).

a) Define the importance of leadership by incorporating recent events
Leadership plays an important role in attaining the higher success and
recognition in the marketplace as the main focus of the leaders on guiding and
influencing others by telling them that what they needs to do and in which manner they
requires to do it. It represent the importance of leadership that is the most crucial
function of management as it helps the business organisation in maximising efficiency
so that the business goals can be attained easily. The importance of leadership can be
seen by the organised event that was Care Quality Commission(2015) which is a non-
departmental public body of the department health and social care. The main motive of
this department is to regulate the proper and quality medical services to the patients. In
this aspect, an effective leadership has great significance as leaders are liable for
operating all the activities like patient experience, team effectiveness, co-design of
services, organisational development and many others(Kopp and Hanson, 2012).

their higher contribution in providing the effective medical services to the both mother
and babies so that they can recover easily(Bobianski, Aselton and Cho, 2016). Other
importance of leadership can be understood by following points:
Moving power to group efforts: By exercising appropriate leadership within the
organisation the management of NHS will be able to lead positive impact on the people
and can pulls up a group of people towards higher level of performance by maintaining
proper human relations.
Helps in introducing necessary changes: leadership also has great
importance in successfully implementing the required changes. As with the help of
effective leadership management will be able to tell the benefits of changes within their
medical services to themselves as well as their brand recognition so that nurses within
the organisation will be able to adopt all the changes desirably.
Leadership theories and the role of leader:
As NHS is considered as a big organisation due to which various professional
groups and departments which makes essential for them to regulate an effective
leadership. In this aspect, they can go through from various theories which enables
them to do their efforts efficiently by managing all the processes and teams towards a
common goals(Ailey and et. al., 2015). The various theories are mentioned here from
which NHS can obtained any of them:
Transformational leadership: This leadership style focus on measuring the
business process with the support of teammates so that leaders can identify the
required changes, can set a clear vision and can successfully implement the changes.
Herein, the leaders plays a huge role as they are responsible for communicating with
their teammates about their vision so that all the members can operate their activities in
order to achieve the organisation goals and objectives(Bruce and et. al., 2017).
Participative leadership: In this leadership style leaders give their main focus on
involving all the subordinates in the decision making process. In context of NHS, nursing
manager must focus on increasing the participations of nurses while taking the decisions

related to provide the services to their patients so that the they can share their ideas and
thoughts with the management and effective decisions can be made by them.
b) Explore the key theoretical concepts in team working
The concept of multi disciplinary within the health care plays an important role as
expertise from several disciplines might bring effective outcomes for patients as well as
business. Working within the multi-disciplinary teams an organisation can easily assess.
Plan, design and monitor their systems in order to provide optimal services to their
patients, satisfied their clients and using their resources with more efficiency(Bruyneel
and et. al., 2015). There are different factors which are included in multi disciplinary
teams which are describing below:
Team dynamics: It is considered as physiological factors which have greatly
impact on the performance and direction of a team. In this aspect manager of NHS must
consider various elements like build healthy relationship, resolve conflicts, set clear
behavioural expectation and other for operating all the medical services effectively.
Values: It define about the culture and principles which have operated within the
organisation. In order to to enhance the motivation of employees to work within a team
various core values must be considered by the manager like respect, responsibility,
integrity, sportsmanship and leadership(Casey, 2013).
Attributes: It is refers to the qualities of each individual. Within the nursing care
industry a person must posses these five qualities like engagement, vision, diversity,
respect and collaboration so that they will be able to provide effective medical services
to their patients.
Possible challenges: It snatch the attention of manage towards providing
effective training to their employees so that the challenges render optimal medical
services can be solved in an ease manner.
In order to operate all the business activities appropriately management of NHS
must focus on team work as It will enables them to attain their business objectives and
goals with more efficiency and in a limited period of time. Various factors are existing in
the business which have great influence on the team like team dynamics, values,
attributes and challenges. These all plays a significant role in influencing the behaviour
and performance of the overall team so it essential for the manager to give their focus

importance of team work can be understand by the following situation: In the medical
healthcare each doctor and nurse plays an important role for example in case of some
emergency, all the doctors will be able to operate their operation activities when they
have proper resources and equipments within in which nurses will help them in providing
all the necessary resources so that they can operate their operation activities in a
significant manner. This is only possible when all the team member including doctors,
nurses and other will work together in the organisation. Hence, as per the preceding
case scenario nurses plays a significant role while an emergency case of a patient is
attend by the doctor. The roles of nurse can be determined by various points includes
monitoring patient, providing treatment, taking vital signs and administering medicine.
For understanding the detailed explanation of importance of team work the following
points can be considered by the management of NHS:
Seeks the same goal: While an organisation will work with an effective team
then everyone within the team will give their focus on common goals of the business.
For example, the main focus of NHS on providing proper medical services to their
patient without making nay profit so it will only possible when they will motivate their
team member to work together in order to attain the business objective in a limited
period of time(Maloney, Fend and Hardin, 2015).
Prevent medical errors: When all the employee will work together then they will
be able to carry out all their activities appropriately. For example, if a person is

is come in the organisation then each department like Outpatient department, medical
and nursing department, paramedical department, Pharmacy department plays their
important role. Like in this case, the ED case manager of outpatient department plays
various functions in order to coordinating and facilitating patient care. The functions
includes administration of medicines, facilitation of procedures, tests and consults and
many more. Whereas nursing division operates their activities for providing
encompassing, appropriate, safe and effective care to their patient(DeBourgh and Prion,
2012).
c) Explore the concept of delegation as a leadership tool
Delegation considered as a most crucial skill of the management which refers to
the power and authority of them to delegate the work among their subordinates or team
members. This is happen when a manager within the organisation have to accomplish a
range of activities on a specific period of time. It will help the manager in accomplishing
their work on time, decrease the work burden from them and will enhance the motivation
of employees. Along with this, the concept of delegation is also considered as an
effective leadership tool which supports the leaders in delegating all their work
effectively(Bridges and et. al., 2016). As the delegation is the most widest term in the
multi disciplinary team so in this case it becomes essential for the leader or a manager
to delegate all their responsibilities as per each individual skills, expertise, knowledge so
that they can accomplish their assigned work with more efficiency. In order to delegate
all the functions appropriately the leaders of NHS must focus on adopting delegating
leadership style in which they need to focus on delegating their responsibilities and
assignments to their employees properly and give them freedom to take decisions so
that they will be able to implement all the necessary changes without any consultation to
the leaders. Along with this, they requires to consider various factors like the employees
are ready for taking the responsibility, explain everything in detail, set deadlines, take
actions in negative situations and many others(Disabato and et. al., 2015). By
considering all these factors the business leader will be able to motivate and guide their
employees in a significant manner so that they can give their highly contribution in
achieving the organisational goals and objectives. Also, this will enables them in

the roles and obligations. For example, while delegating the work managers and leaders
must focus on skills, knowledge and talent of each and every individual so that they can

manager and leaders is different which can be determined by following points. In context
of managers, while delegating the responsibilities they are following a specific process
like select a person, assign the duties, provide training and establish proper monitor and
control channels so that the effectiveness of attaining the goals can be assured.

they can increase the team morale, innovation, enhance efficiency and productivity of

business organisation in improving medical health care, reduce their cost, enhance
efficiency, improve the patient satisfaction and increase the brand value of the

subordinates can be maintained so that they can operate all their activities effectively by

management, leadership and teamwork is essential in order to give the best services to
the patient. As per the above discussion it has recommended to the the manager and
leaders that they should focus on proper delegation of authorities is required so that they
can inspire the employees to accomplish their work with more efficiency and attention
without taking it as a burden.
