TITLE
"Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health”.
The Institute of Medicine along with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) aims to
take a major initiative towards the establishment of Future on Nursing (Campbell et al., 2017).
The initial action plan of the program will include conducting a study that aims at producing a
transformational report on the future of nursing. The Ad hoc committee formed will be allocated
for examining whether the nurse workforce are capable of meeting the demands of a reformed
heath care and public healthcare system (Campbell et al., 2017). It will be their responsibility to
develop or create certain set of national recommendations that includes the one which addresses
issues like how nursing services can be delivered at a shortage environment or the nursing
education system’s capacity. The report for the above action will be formed by the committee
and the report will outline a clear agenda and blueprint for the action plan including public and
the institutional policy changes at both the local and state levels and also at the national level
(Campbell et al., 2017). The recommendations made by them must address the issues with the
system changes including the innovative ways of resolving those (innovative ways to solve
nursing shortage in the United State).
The underlying recommendations made by the committee with the aim to recognize and
take into account the responsibility of nurses in designing as well as implementing an
effective healthcare system are focused on the following key elements-
Reconceptualising and redefining nurse’s role with respect to workforce, nursing
shortages, social and public issues and on the current technology for future development.

Looking for innovative solutions relating to the delivery of care and ensuring proper and
quality care served to the patients and imparting education to the healthcare professionals
focusing on nursing and the delivery of service of nursing care.
Increasing the availability of nursing faculty, capacity of the nursing schools to
accommodate and give quality education to the nursing students, redesigning the nursing
schools and education centres to assure an adequate number of nurses prepared well to
work in healthcare settings and are able to meet the current as well as future healthcare
demands.
Increasing nurse retention in a variety of healthcare settings including primary health
care, acute healthcare, ambulatory services, long term care, community and public
healthcare by responding to nurse shortage and decrease nurse turnover.
The committee formed on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future
of Nursing, at the Institute of Medicine, creates a vision for a transformed health system by
identifying the limitations and the demands of the current healthcare system in the United
States (Sebastian et al., 2018). The IOM "Future of Nursing” envisions a system that aims at
making quality care accessible to a diverse population and promote health and disease
prevention, lead to an improved health outcome and uses holistically approach to deliver care
across the lifespan (Institute of Medicine (US) Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson

care and prevention to be the central drivers of the healthcare system and it’s the norms to be

to achieve an improved health outcome (Pittman et al., 2015). The payment system for

healthcare services should be made in such a way that ultimately aims at delivering quality
care services at an affordable range both for the individuals as well as the society.
The key areas of the IOM report constitute the following-
Nursing Practice: The IOM report regarding the Nursing Practice states “advanced practice
registered nurses should be able to practice to the full extent of their education and training"
(Altman et al., 2016). The nurses should be able to practice and deliver care using their
knowledge, skills and expertise they have received in their education and training programs
(Bastable, 2017). They should be able to use current knowledge about health issues faced by
the patients and are able to plan and deliver care according to the need of the patients. The
nurses must comply with the nursing standards and carry out a holistically approach for
delivering care. They must be able to utilize the knowledge they have received through
trainings and are able to carry out evidence based practices to achieve an improved health
outcome. The nurses must understand their roles and responsibility and must comply with the
guidelines proposed by the National standards. The IOM committee is looking forward to
increase clinical nurse specialist cohort for practicing and extending APRN licensure as
enabled by the New Jersey Nurse Practice Act (National Council of State Boards of Nursing,
2016). They are even working towards establishing a variety of programs to facilitate and
promote nursing practices like the student’s summer residency programs, a graduate nurse
residency program and a nurse academy with the partnership of area universities.
Nursing Education:
There is a huge requirement of increasing nurse education and training programs for the

health by delivering quality care. The key message on this area states "Nurses should achieve
higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes
seamless academic progression". The recommendations includes increasing the nurse force
with a degree of bachelors of science in Nursing (BSN) to 80% and almost doubling the
number the nurses with doctorates in 2020, providing and delivering education that meets the
learning outcomes including competency based education, inter professional education and
trainings on teamwork and collaboration and increasing the diversity of nursing workforce in
terms of gender, race and ethnicity (Moran, Burson & Conrad, 2016). It is important for the
nurse to work being cultural competent in order to achieve an improved health outcome of
the patient.
Nursing workforce development:
There is a strong need for developing nursing workforce to respond to the nursing
shortage. Nurses need to be engaging and committed towards their work in order to achieve
an improved health outcome. However, due to nursing shortage, nurses often feel drenched
and burnout while working and taking care of so many patients in the healthcare settings.
Therefore, nurse workforce must be developed that will satisfy the needs of the patient as
well as the healthcare organizations. The nurse workforce must also be improved in order to
deliver quality care and decrease nurse turnover.

forming healthier communities through nursing. The main objective of The Maryland Action
Coalition is the transformation of the healthcare system through nursing in the State (Ogbolu
et al., 2019). Acknowledgement of the work and issues in Maryland, the Maryland Action
Coalition is leading the way to improve the health of the people residing in the State.
In collaboration with the Maryland Action Coalition, Johns Hopkins Home Care Group
has launched the Cross Continuum Fellowship (CCF) program to educate the nurses in
understanding the types of cares in different care settings (Gifford, 2017). This program will
enhance the knowledge of the nurses by providing proper exposure and training in the
healthcare sector which in turn will contribute to health inequity. The residents of the
Baltimore area will also build a sense of community by different training programs
conducted.
A Maryland Action Coalition Summit was conducted recently whose primary objective
was to assess the previous advancements and ways to improve them to new innovations
helping the patients (Harris, Roussel & Thomas, 2016). It also provided the participants with
the opportunity to disseminate innovation in advancing a culture of health. This summit
helped the participants understand the utility of Stop The Bleed training to stop life-
thrseatening bleeding until medical helps arrives. The people need to understand the
usefulness of the training in Bleeding Control so as to provide immediate first aid to the
patient who has sustained a critical injury.
