A metaparadigm refers to the set of ideas or philosophies that offer organization for
the functioning of a particular discipline. This essay will elaborate on the four nursing
metaparadigm and describe the interrelation between them.
As a person who wants to adopt nursing profession as my career I am conscious of the
circumstance that in order to be a successful nurse, I am expected to meet different aspects
obligatory for the health and wellbeing of my patient. The four metaparadigms of nursing are
namely, person, environment, nursing, and health. Patients are considered as valued
individuals, to be appreciated, encouraged and understood with the authority to make well-
versed decisions concerning their health.
The person component emphasizes on the patients, who receive care, in addition to
the family members and other individuals who are significant to the patients. This component
focuses on the significance of identifying the spiritual and social preferences of the patient,
besides the physical needs and also attributes the resultant health outcome to the interaction
of the patient with the social and physical connections. The premise of this component is that
that the patient must be empowered for self-health management, by showing dignity and
respect, with constructive personal connections.
The environment component places attention to the surroundings that create an impact
on the patients and suggests that how the interaction of patient with the friends, family, and
social factors like economic conditions, technology, culture, geographic locations, and social
connections must be modified to enhance health status.
The nursing component applies philosophies of knowledge, abilities, technology,
associations, professional decision and communication to conduct duties and accountabilities
for accomplishing the best conceivable situation in patient health consequence.

The health component focuses on the extent of wellbeing and access to care services
that a patient has. It states that there are several emotional, physical, social, intellectual, and
spiritual factors that affect the state of wellbeing of a patient.
The metaparadigm can be explained by the Theory of Human Caring which highlights
that patient care encompasses holistic treatment and it is necessary to be more conscious and
attentive towards patient interactions and communications, thus allowing for continuous and
successful care with a profound personal association. The self-care deficit nursing theory also
governs the concepts stated above by postulating that patients commonly wish to care for
themselves and are able to recuperate rapidly and holistically, when permitted to accomplish
self-care to the best of capability. Moreover, Florence Nightingale also mentioned that a
healing environment needs to be created that eventually helps the patients and their family
members to cope with the stresses that are enforced by hospitalization, illness, healing
process, medical visits, and bereavement.
Therefore, my nursing theory suggests that it is essential for all nursing professionals
to apply the aforementioned four metaparadigms to the process of nursing while caring for
patients with the aim of addressing all aspects of care. Thus, my theory postulates that the
interaction between the four metaparadigms give rise to human-human inter-subjective
association in which the nursing staff governs and is affected by the patient and vice versa.
