Introduction
The presentation will identify verbal and non-verbal communication for showing concern and
affection to Mr. Perkins. It will use the grief and loss communication framework to help Mr.
Perkins overcome his grief, death, and loss.
Thesis Statement: Good communication is necessary between patient and nurse for successful
consequences of nursing care.
Verbal and Nonverbal Communication Strategies
Verbal Communication Strategies
Excellent communication skills are effective verbal strategy for the nurse. The nurse must get to
know Mr. Perkins and get involved in his life to make him feel good and help him to breakdown
any obstacles (Brewer, Carley, Benham-Hutchins, Effken & Reminga, 2018).
The tone of the voice of the nurse must have the feeling, and the volume must be moderate while
we speaking with Mr. Perkins. Listening and attending Mr. Perkins, engaging in conversation
and sharing experiences can make verbal communication more enjoyable and productive.
Nonverbal Communication Strategies
The body language and touch can be the nonverbal communication strategies used by the nurse.
Sometimes the minimum gesture such as offering a cup of tea when Mr. Perkins is sad can
improve the relationship and enhance the non -verbal communication between the nurse and Mr.
Perkins. I will also show positive body language of the nurse.
Touch can be a powerful non-verbal communication strategy. A light touch on the hand of Mr.
Perkins could convey the affection and concern for Mr. Perkins by the nurse. It is also necessary
to perceive the feelings of Mr. Perkins by the touch (Real, Santiago, Fay, Isaacs & Carll-White,
2018).
Use of the Grief and Loss Communication Framework
With the help of grief and loss communication framework named as Stages of Grieving by
Kubler Ross, the nurse can frame future transition care for Mr. Perkins. The five stages of this
framework are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. First of all, the nurse need

help Mr. Perkins with the grieving procedure and cope up the grief, death, loss, bereavement, and
sufferings.
The nurse will initiate the relation by building trust with Mr. Perkins and motivate him to express
his feelings in a supportive, non-judgmental and trusting atmosphere (Turkelson, Aebersold,
Redman & Tschannen, 2017). The nurse can also assist Mr. Perkins to learn and implement
strategies for coping pain.
The nurse can also motivate Mr. Perkins' sons to take care of and support him. She can also refer
to some useful resources such as psychological support, counseling, and group therapy to prevent
complicated grieving of Mr. Perkins.
Mr. Perkins must be examined regularly for complicated grieving with some standardized
medical tools and tests. The support of the nurse can help Mr. Perkins to realize that he is not
alone who is experiencing the signs of grieving and loss (Williams, Ilten & Bower, 2016).
Conclusion
The presentation concludes that excellent communication skills are the effective verbal strategy
and body language and touch can be the nonverbal communication strategies used by the nurse.
The nurse can frame future transition care for Mr. Perkins with Stages of Grieving by Kubler
Ross.
