1INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN HEALTH CARE
Information and technology skills are very much important in nursing care technologies
and using a proper technology in the patient care will allow the nurses to do give the best care to
the patients. The main goal of using a technology in the nursing care is to provide a safety care to
the patients and improves the patient outcomes (Rouleau, Gagnon & Côté, 2015). In this essay,
the importance of technology in patient care, the role of nurses in using those technologies,
examples of technology use and the effect of technology on patient care is discussed.
To provide a safe environments to a patient it is very much important to use information
and technology skills and it is very much important for the nurses to learn about the technologies
that can be used in health care practices. A proper knowledge in technology will allow the nurses
to find the patients data more quickly and that will enhance the patient satisfaction. In addition to
this, a computer skilled nurse can also use knowledge in improving the nursing care. A proper
knowledge in informatics skills will help the nurses to improve the quality of the health care
outcome. Nowadays, health care information and hospital care information are used to improve
the health care practices and this improvement in the patient care service is directly proportional
to the health outcome of the patients. In addition to this, it is seen that using of technology in
shift planning of the nurses positively affect the quality of the patient care. A decision support
system is operated by formulating the human knowledge in the technology and the use of this
system will provide a safer patient care. The using of information and technology skills are very
much important in order to give a safe patient care to the patients (Darvish et al., 2014).
In using of modern of modern technology and information skills, the nurses are one of the
major stakeholders as are directly involved in implementing those modern services. The nurses
are involved in designing an easy to use process and at the same time the process must be
efficient. They can increase the system speed that are used in current condition. They also can

suggest several interventions that can improve the system and that can increase the patient safety.
In case of telenursing, nurses are the only one who are involved in the procedure. In order to
execute the telenursing method, the nurses should be compatible with the idea of the telenurse.
Through the telenursing service, a nurse can be involved in monitoring of the patients, enhancing
patient education and can give counseling to the patients through internet. In case of giving care
in remote areas they use their specific skills and knowledge. They can use specific networks for
discussing various nursing issues and can participate in online meetings in order to exchange
their thoughts (Darvish et al., 2014).
There are many modern technologies that can help the nurses in taking health care related
decisions. One of the important technology in modern day nursing is the use of genetics and
genomics. This technology helps the nurses to assess the health conditions of the patients, to
understand the severity of the disease that are caused by genetic factors. According to Pearson &
Flake ( 2013) the use of genetic sequencing and genotyping are very much helpful for the
nurses in terms of improving diagnostic techniques. It is also expected that using of this
technology will reduce the cancer and defected births in upcoming twenty years. However, some
nurses are not have enough knowledge about that technology. The using of an Electronic
Healthcare Records (EHR) will allow the nurses to provide a coordinated care for almost 24
hours per day and 7 days a week. This system allow the nurses in taking quick decisions in an
emergency conditions. Along with this, the exchange of knowledge among the nurses will reduce
the chances of error in decision making related to patient health. Along with this, the
Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) and the Clinical Decision Support will reduce the
medical errors and help the nurses in decision making process. The reduced medical error will
also increase the patient satisfaction (Huston,2013).

The patient data, that are entered in the electronic data bases, help in improving the
quality of the patient care. In a study it was found that, the patient data entered in the EHR
system has reduced the medication error and as a result enhancement of the patient safety has
also occurred. The interviewees reported that, the sustainability of the patient data also increases
the patient safety as the entered data cannot be deleted or modified and by using the EHR system
the possibility of missing data from the data base can be minimized and this will also enhance
the patient safety. However there may be errors by the nurses while entering the data in the data
bases and this amy alter the patient safety as those data cannot be altered or modified (Tubaishat,
2017).
Lastly it can be concluded that, the technology and information skills are very much
effective to enhance the patient care safety and reduce the medication errors. In this essay, the
role of nurses in implementing technology and some examples of the modern technology for
health care sector are discussed. In addition to this, how entered data is effecting the patient
safety is highlighted in this essay.
