promote health being of patient. In health care setting, one of the major expectations or desired
competencies required by nurse is to engage in interpersonal relationship and patient-centred
care process. Such process is needed to identify needs and preferences of patients and involve
them in health care decision-making. This is also an approach to build rapport with patient and
increase their trust with the health care system. This essay defines the nursing practice and
presents the personal vision or ideas about nursing practice by means of a metaphor or model.
Secondly, the personal nursing ideas or vision is linked to one nursing theory, New Zealand
Nurse Organization Code of ethics, one principle of Treaty of Waitangi and the Nursing Council
of New Zealand domain. This discussion highlights the personal values promotes fulfilment of
key nursing responsibilities.

Other benefit of patient-centred care is that it increases patient’s satisfaction with care and
eventually improves patient outcomes (Kitson et al., 2013). My personal aim as a nurse is also to
maintain good relationship with my patient and encourage them to freely express their problem
to me so that we can engage in shared decision-making.
The patient-centred care approach and my personal values of compassionate nursing is
also in relevance with the nursing theory of Peplau’s. Hildegard Peplau gave the Interpersonal
Relations Model, which is based on the psychodynamic nursing theory. The interpersonal
relations theory is based on the belief that effective nurse-patient partnership is critical for good
outcome in patients. It defined nursing as process in which interpersonal process of therapeutic
interactions takes place with nurse and patient to identify common goals in treatment (Deane, &
Fain, 2016). Hence, both nurse and patient proceed with the same goal only when they find both
have mutual respect for each other. Therefore, the above mentioned nursing process comes out
on the basis of following assumptions:
Nurse and patient can engage in therapeutic interactions
Communication and interviewing skills of nurse is the basis on which therapeutic

for practice in New Zealand. On this basis, I can say that my personal values of affection and
accountability also fulfils this requirement because compassionate care is included in the
professional standards of nursing practice, whereas the accountability values promotes fulfilment
of ethical and legal requirements in care. For nurses, being professional means the ensuring that
all professionals standards of nursing practice is met on a daily basis and they adhere to ethics
and code of conduct for nurses too (Grace, 2017). Hence, I also use this responsibility to respect
the dignity of patient and work with them to protect their health.
c) Relevance of personal nursing values with New Zealand nursing council’s domain and
competencies:
The New Zealand Nursing Council discusses about four domains or competencies
required by registered nurse to practice in New Zealand. This includes professional
responsibility, management of nursing care, interpersonal relationships and interpersonal health
care and improvement. My personal values and ideas of nursing complements with the domain
of interpersonal relationship. The main expectancy from nurse under this domain is that nurse
culture of patient was not given enough emphasis, or no information was given regarding it

principles that were established to develop effective relationship between the Government and
Maoris included the principle of Partnership, the principle of participation and the principle of
protection. This principle of partnership focuses on working with Maori communities to plan
health services and appropriate health services for them. Secondly, the participation principle
emphasizes on involving Maoris in decision making and planning the delivery of care. The third
principle is related to involving the Government to ensure that gap in health outcome between
Maoris and non-Maoris can be reduced (Treaty of Waitangi principles, 2017).
On evaluation of all the principles, I can say that my personal nursing values or vision is
related to the principle of participations because I have always focused on engaging patient in
