I am writing for expressing my interests in joining the Nursing team serving the medical
surgical ward. I would be graduating in May with my B.S.N from the XYZ College. I believe
that the skills you are searching for in the nursing professional are present within me and
therefore, I believe myself to be a suitable candidate for the position. I would like to explain the
skills that i have developed following the STAR model.
Healthcare is one complex entity that requires coordination of multiple talented
individuals for providing high quality care. Studies opine that high functioning teams help in not
only providing better support for the service users but also help each other during the times of
stress. I am a believer of this nursing philosophy and therefore, over time I have developed
strong team working skills during my student life so that I can apply such skills in my workplace.
Communication is paramount while working in teams of healthcare members as nurse. I possess
strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills in order to avoid any form of

misunderstanding in clinical handovers and workplace duties but also while communication with
others informally.
Empathy and compassion are two important non-vernal elements that I maintain in my
communication style not only with patients but also with other members. This helps in
development of mutual trust and respect among members helping in managing stress and
anxiety. This help in reducing the feelings of burnouts as each member can share their stress and
get help whenever required. Focusing on relationship building help in ensuring smooth
teamwork without creating any form of power struggles and blame games. I follow compassion
and empathy while communicating with all my friends and as a result I have developed strong
bonds with them. When individuals feel that I am genuinely interested in their concerns and
issues, it helps in development of mutual trust helping in strengthening relationships.
Power struggles not only affect the morale of team members but also increase the risk of
unsafe and poor-quality care delivery to patients. Blame games may affect relationship
development among team members and hence I believe it is extremely important for nurses to
harbor the principle of accountability. Each members of the team should be responsible as well
as answerable to the interventions they apply and the decisions they make on behalf of the
patient for development of health of the patient. I believe that I am not only accountable about
my actions but also consider effective teamwork as an important aspect of quality care to patient.
Hence, I can successfully step into the shoes of the nursing professional that you expect to serve
your organization.
While working in a multi-disciplinary team, a nurse might have to interact with different
experts from various backgrounds attending the same patient. A patient recovering from stroke in

the rehabilitation unit requires the support of different types of experts like dietician, speech
therapists, occupational therapist, physiotherapists, physicians as well as nursing professionals.
Coming from various different backgrounds with own sets of skills, expertise and experience,
different professionals have different views for the treatment of the same patient. In such
situation, conflicts might arise which might impeded quality and uninterrupted service delivery
affecting patient health and satisfaction. In such situation, conflicts might arise hampering the
workflow. Developing negotiation skills and conflict resolutions skulls are extremely helpful in
such situations. This skills help in handling such difficult situations through active listening,
providing constructive feedback as well as allowing individuals to negotiate on the issues. I
believe that I have proper conflict resolution skills which would help me in managing such
conflicts with expertise and would help the team to continue provide care to such patients
successfully.
One of the most important skills required in nursing is critical thinking skills. Critical
thinking is the disciplined as well as intellectual procedures for applying skillful reasoning as a
guide to belief or action. In the domain of nursing, critical thinking for clinical decision-making
is the ability for thinking in a systematic as well as logical manner with openness towards
question as well as for reflecting on the reasoning procedures used for ensuring safe nursing
practices as well as quality care. I believe that in this profession, a nurse might not only
encounter clinical issues but he may also face ethical dilemmas, legal obligations, decision-
making confusions and many others. In such areas, critical thinking skills help nurses to
overcome various types of confusions and dilemmas and help them take the correct decisions. I
harbor such skills and thereby fit into the position of the nursing professional you are searching
for. Other important skills that I posses are the time management skill and multi-tasking ability.

Often on many days in wards, there might be huge work burden with lesser nurse to patient ratio.
This might require me to handle many patients within a constricted amount of time. Under such
instances, my time management skills and multi-tasking ability would help me handle such
strenuous demands successfully sufficing the needs of every patient within the correct time with
high quality. Hence, I am prepared to work under pressure successfully and find myself
appropriate to fill up the space of the nursing professional you require for your organization. I
am quite comfortable as well as enthusiastic about the technological advancements in nursing
facilities these days and also believe that I have the digital literacy to handle such advancements
successfully.
However, I still believe that I have more scope of improvement and want to participate in
continuous professional development. I understand the importance of reflective practices and
thereby I maintain a reflective journal for myself. I note down my experiences everyday
depicting the various negative and the positive aspects I go through. The reflection of the
incidents helps me to identify my various strengths and weakness I possess and accordingly help
me to develop personal development plan. I often set SMART goals for myself and accordingly
device my action plans. This helps me to be in a continuous process of development and I want
to follow such practices throughout my life. This would help me to develop my skills and
knowledge gradually and become an expert nurse in the future helping me to serve your
organization successfully.
