NURSING COMMUNICATION BARRIERS 1
Improving communication skills and confidence while delivering
news to gastroscopy done patients
In the healthcare practices, I found three most important and critical barriers to an effective and
confident communication with patients. I found that practitioners in the healthcare sector face a lack
of confidence, violence in horizontal and vertical directions, and language barriers as well. These are
the most critical barriers that I found in this article while addressing the barriers and their conflict
resolution. In my own experience, I found that people working in the healthcare sector as newly
appointed practitioners felt uncomfortable while they were communicating with me. Researchers
have found that people practicing in the healthcare sector have a lack of confidence about what they
are going share with their patients also; they get confused sometimes whether they are sharing
appropriate information with them or they are making them scared about their disease. In the on-
going development process, new practitioners integrate their own communication skills with their
newly graduated practitioners to build a confidence. In studies where students were asked a few
questions, their answers are relatable to my personal thinking about clinical communication.
I think the data collected from the questionnaires are quite supportive of the language barrier they
found affecting their communication. In addition, I found that new practitioners find themselves
comfortable in communicating with their co-workers instead of having a conversation with their
patients or their families. As per my opinion, such results show that clinical practitioners feel
comfortable in communicating with their co-workers only as they can understand the language they
are using. Another challenge discussed with newly graduated clinical practitioner shows that they do
not find themselves capable enough of communicating with their patients or their families. I find
people feel rushed and have a tendency to forget the tasks they were supposed to do.
This theory of newly appointed practitioners about their challenges is relatable with general
communication barriers within their industry. I think language is a most critical issue along with a
significant impact of lack of confidence. From this analysis, I found that in order to improve the
communication skills of healthcare, practitioners are supposed to be familiar with local terms used
for their technical terminology. I found this change or improvement in their communication skills will
make them comfortable in talking with their patients and their families as well. Also, this
improvement will make them confident to make conversations with their higher authorities and will
make them communicate the right information to the patient.
In the case of communicating with patients who have done their gastroscopy procedure,
practitioners feel some language issue whether the patient will understand the technical
terminology or not. Such language barriers identified commonly in the healthcare sector. Healthcare
practitioners sometimes, feel that their language may cause a critical communication barrier and
sometimes their low confidence causes such a communication barrier that makes them feel
demotivated.
