2NURSING PROFESSIONAL PORTFOLIO
My Profile:
I am registered in Western Sydney University as a student nurse to pursue my
Bachelor of Nursing course. As a part of the requirement of my course I will be going for a
two-week clinical placement at Eecto H C as a trainee nurse. I have my basic nursing
certificate in PCL nursing from Nepal where I have completed my pre-graduate academic
milestone with first division marks. Throughout my academic career I share a nice
relationship with the professors and lecturers of my university. I have also a strong bonding
with friends and peers. From my childhood I am known as a helpful and friendly individual. I
am very compassionate towards my family, friends and any other individual in front of me.
Because of my previous academic and professional experience I am very competent about
speaking with older adults and understanding their issues. With regard to my job
achievements, in recognition of the time I spent caring for adults with disabilities, I was
awarded the title Employee of the Month at the aged care facility where I work as an assistant
in nursing (AIN). I love to work with older people, because they have very few people to
understand their problems and to value their views. My future goal is to work in a geriatric
ward as a registered nurse. I would like to improve my skills in those attributes that could
allow me to reach my goal. I also prioritise the principles and compliances of nurses
considering their roles and responsibilities as per the code of conduct. I also highly values
the Code of Conduct that emphasizes that legally, securely and ethically practicing is a
critical requirement that all nurses must comply with (NMBA, 2018). Therefore, by
complying with mandatory rules, regulation and nursing responsibilities I will be working as
a part of nursing team with my ethics and honesty.

Critical reflection
In nursing critical reflection is a very effective systematic thinking approach that can
improve a nursing individual. The Gibbs Reflection Cycle in a widely known reflective cycle
for reflective practice. The Gibbs Reflection Cycle will be used to reflect on an event when I
was to working with older adult patients with dementia in a nursing home last year. I found
that one of my senior colleagues was ignoring a 65 years old patient’s emotional needs. She

was ignoring the perspectives and choice of the patient while making a plan for therapeutic
game. I feel very sad after observing that incident and the helpless situation of that particular
patient. I became very disappointed to see that how ignorance made him less interested and
also lead to his poor attachment with that physical activity. According to Macksey (2012),
understanding the preference of a patient is crucial part of nursing that also allows a patient to
be engaged in the healthcare intervention while increasing the success rate of the intervention
process. That particular caregiver violated the nursing codes of practice as well as nursing
standards through neglecting the patents perspectives, and dignity. I have found that how a
nurse can change the entire experience of a care receivers through active communication. I
change this negative feeling to a strong encouragement for improving my communication
skill and for developing my in-depth understanding of patient cantered care. I learned that
nurses have the ability to tackle patients ' holistic requirements and encourage their well-
being and health.
Nevertheless, I realise that I would be able to provide better quality care to the aged
patient through developing reflective skills in adopting evidence based practices. I have also
realised while reading the nursing code of conducts and standard that the particular nurse who
ignored the patient’s preferences in that particular day, lacks knowledge about working
within professional and ethical framework. Hence from this understanding I have decided
that I would spend more time on learning nursing regulations and policies through which I
will gain more knowledge and better understanding on patient centred care especially for
aged care practice. At the same time, I will be more aware of the ethics of nursing in my
future nursing practice, particularly with regard to showing values and dignity towards
patents opinions and choices, so that I function within reasonable boundaries and in my care I
change the lives of patients (NMBA, 2018).
