Different types of barriers are faced by nurses while providing culturally competent care to
diverse patients coming from different cultural backgrounds. Enhancement of culturally and
linguistically competent care is important for patient centered care and development of therapeutic
relationship with diverse patients. Proper organizational policies, utilization of resources and best
evidence-based practices can help in meeting such objectives. Effective elimination of different
communication barriers is indeed important for meeting the needs of diverse population by the
nursing professionals. Good communication skills are important by the nursing professionals to
ensure patient satisfaction. Some of the barriers in communication that needs to be overcome for
the achievement of patient satisfaction can be categorized as physical barriers, psychological
barriers and other nurse-involved barriers. The physical barriers are mainly being deaf, difficulties
in language while the psychological barriers are the pain. The nurse led barriers are the lack of
communication skills, noise, limited time and the lack of knowledge of the different foreign
languages.
Besides the cultural competency, language proficiency and effective communication skills,
knowledge of information technology is extremely important for ensuring quality service to nurses.
Training programs for the development of such knowledge can help nurses to a great extent.
Trends of information management about patient care services, discharges, medication records,
allocation of resources and many others all take place with the help of information technology. It
ensures smooth flow of work and effective data management for future uses, to maintain records
and to avoid any form of legal obligations and maintain patient history. Therefore, nurses need to
be trained in this domain to keep up with the new medical updates. Moreover, one of the
advantages that nurses can enjoy by using online education mode is that they can gather
information at any time required. Therefore, all these aspects would help nurses to become
effective professionals helping healthcare organizations to reach their zenith.
