Introduction
Management roles in nursing are just as challenging as other management roles in bigger
corporate organizations. In fact nursing roles demand a high level of accuracy and efficiency
because they are in charge of taking care of people you might be slightly unwell or even at
the edge of their lives (Gillies & Galliford, 1994). This assignment will be exploring the
management roles of two such supervisors in the nursing industry. the first leader that you
will be taking into consideration is the head nurse and the second will be the chief nursing
officer. They will be questioned about their experience in the nursing sectors and how
challenging their jobs are along with the methods they adapt while facing various problems
that arise during their jobs. Their answers will then be compared to my perception of their
roles and I will consider if I want to choose a similar career goal for myself.
Interview 1: Head Nurse
1. The qualification that is preferred for the head nurse is a masters degree in nursing
from a recognised school as it is assumed that masters degrees make the nurses kill
full when it comes to leadership, communication the ability to critically think when it
comes to emergencies.
2. In order to train for this position, experience of one and a half years as a nurse was
required along with 3 weeks of training under the previous head nurse of the
department.
3. Becoming a head nurse was difficult because my contemporaries were now
answerable to me and this created a lot of miscommunication in the beginning. They
would often feel awkward about dispersing the entire information for used to presume

complaints are addressed by me and discrimination by patients due to to the various
cultural backgrounds of nurses are also handled by me.
4. In order to build an effective health care team I made sure that they are very open to
each other and do not question any kind of communication techniques that are taught
to them. Even if it feels like some information is unnecessary I have asked them to
inform people about the same anyway (Tomey, 2009).
5. I am yet to master perfect data handling and recording and I hope I will be able to
master it's someday very soon.
Interview 2: chief nursing officer
1. Chief nursing officers are often required to have a master's degree in nursing and a
master's degree in health administration. Additional knowledge about personnel
handling is also required along with sufficient experience in the field.
2. The training that I received was oh yeah as a team leader and 3 years as the head
nurse, followed by 6 months of training as an assistant to the chief nursing officer.
3. As the chief nursing officer all kinds of escalations are handled by me if they have
reached a level of dispute that cannot be handled by my juniors. I often come across
cases of respect by either the nurse or the patient which is difficult to resolve. Many
times nurses are blamed for the death of a patient and in this case I have to step in and
ensure that the nurses had done their duty and if I find a lack on their part I make sure
that appropriate steps are taken against them and the patient's family is compensated.
4. I serve as the link between the doctors and the nurses. I am sure that all kinds of
communication within these two groups a perfectly maintained and that various

communication strategies are discussed and followed by both. given the fact that I am
at the helm of the operation, I am always on my toes and it is a stressful job, despite
how rewarding it can be.
Perception of the roles
My perceptions of the roles are similar to the ones presented. however these interviews open
my eyes to the importance of communication in nursing. we make it very clear that any lack
of communication can cost a life and therefore communication between the patients, the
patient's family, doctors and nurses are integral for the smooth flow of operations. this also
makes it very clear that the job has no time for rest when one is posted on the floor and one
must always be very attentive and sure of what they are doing and should have the ability to
critically think and come up with solutions to various kinds of problems immediately.
Career Goal
Red chief nursing officer is a long shot however I would love to work and take my chances
because the work of the officer is difficult yet very rewarding. he or she is at the helm of the
operations and are responsible for various critical decision making tasks. I want to reach that
level of experience where I can take the correct decisions and be proud of myself when I
save a life or help a person in need (Selvren, Ekvall & Thompson, 2006). I realise that
reaching this goal will require an enormous amount of hard work and experience and I am
willing to do both.

Conclusion
The interviews were eye openers about the job of a nurse. It gave me a clear perspective
about the same and in conclusion a lot of insight has been gained and it was clear perspective
will influence my personal decision in the future. It has also deeply ingrained in me the
importance of communication and quick and critical thinking abilities that are required as a
nurse.
