1. Thinks critically and analyses nursing practice
Being a first year student, I was placed in aged care where I got chance to provide
services to patients with different medical issues. I was attending one patient, who experience
extreme pain. That patient ceaselessly complaint regarding the pain and became verbally abusive
(Cusack, 2015). At a time, I felt that the person was overreacting and I had obligation to think
critically and analyse the situation appropriately to get the solution of the issue. In order to help
the patient, I gone through the charts of the patient and communicate with the physician, and
then alter the medication. Apart from this, I also made the patient understand that all the
professionals were working round the clock for making each individual feel better. By this, the
patient feels happy that I understand the situation and think critically over it by analysing the
nursing practice in order to resolve this issue.
2. Engages in therapeutic and professional relationships
When I was placed in aged care, I was assigned with the role to attend a patient who is
mentally ill. With these patients, a health care practitioner needs to have patience and handle the
situations appropriately. The patient screamed on the nurses who was attending him as no one is
able to understand what the patient wants to say. At that time, I go to the patient as a professional
and interact with him. I communicate effectively with him which enables me to understand what
the patient wants to say. I treat him respectfully and make him feel safe and secure. This makes
the patient feel happy and enable me to develop respect and trust in professional relationship.
3. Maintains the capability for practice
While placed at aged care, I was not supposed to provide patient with any kind of
medication. The nursing team who was attending that patient was not aware about in and asked
me to give him medication (Edmonds, Cashin and Heartfield, 2016). I said no to them and told
them that it was not within my practice scope. This resulted in getting appreciation from the
nursing staff and they were happy that I respond it timely to wellbeing of self and others in
regards of capability for practice.

confident regarding my competencies and skills, still a nervousness was there. We got a new
admission in ward and the nurse under which I worked had asked me to perform complete
assessment of patient. By seeing that the patient was quite unwell, my anxiety level increased
due to which I made some errors in documentation. At that time, the nurse talked to me calmly
and explained me the ways to collect required information (Jones, Shaban and Creedy, 2015).
The nurse then asked me to perform assessment again next day and I did that very well and
conduct the assessment comprehensively.
5. Develops a plan for nursing practice
At the time of my placement, the nurse under which I worked asked me to develop plan
for patients I was attending. I followed other nurses and developed plan accordingly, but then I
realised that the time planner made by me was not according to choice of patient. Then, I
changed the morning daily living activities according to the choice of patient which makes my
planner different from other nurses and I was appreciated for my efforts by my seniors.
6. Provides safe, appropriate and responsive quality nursing practice
At the time of working in hospitality setting, I was asked by my senior to attend the
patient with severe fever. The condition of that patient was much critical and I was asked to their
family members about providing information regarding all the medical history of patient. I
recorded all the information accurately and communicate that to senior doctor appropriately. As
a result, I was appreciated by doctor for my honest and truthful communication in relation to
safe, adequate and responsive quality nursing practice.
7. Evaluates outcomes to inform nursing practice
During the placement, I was asked to attend a patient who is ill. I was given with
responsibility to evaluate the outcomes of the treatment that is provided to the patient. I checked
all the reports and review them appropriately in order to evaluate the outcomes of the treatment
based on that. By reviewing all the reports and treatment given to the patient, I am enabled to
evaluate appropriate. This has been monitoring the progress and attaining the expected goal of
early recovery of patient for which I was appreciated by my senior (Ossenberg, Dalton and
Henderson, 2016).
