Nursing is noble profession in which the empathy for the patients is very crucial as it
is associated with the patients’ health. A nurse provides protection to the patients by
preventing injuries, diagnosing of the particular disease, and providing advocacy of care. A
nurse generally maintains a few value and beliefs as a part of their profession. Therefore, it
can be said that, a nurse has a few specific values and beliefs as a part of their profession. The
core values and beliefs of a nurse practitioner are maintaining the privacy, human dignity,
maintaining commitment, honesty towards the patient during delivery of the care,
professional competency, altruism, excellence of service (Rose, Nies & Reid, 2018). In this
essay, a few nursing values and practices have been identified and discussed that can affect
the decision making process of nurse during delivering a care to the patients.
During the self-assessment I have found that there are a few beliefs that can affect the
decision making process of me. The human dignity is an important value that can affect the
decision making process as it demands dignity for all the patients. I should treat all the
patients in a same manner and the approach should be like that I am treating my own loved
ones with immense respect. However, if I will fail to show the same respect to all the
patients it will ultimately hamper the process of making decision related to the treatment of
that patient. On the other hand the practice of privacy should be strictly followed as it will
help me to maintain the principle of patient cantered care during the delivery of care. The
patient centred-approach is the nursing techniques in which the patient is main area of
concern and patient should get all the information regarding his or her health (McCormack &
McCance, 2016). Along with this, I should attentively hear the voice of patient regarding
taking any decisions related to the health of the patient. The maintenance of the privacy is
another values of myself that can affect the decision making process. I should not breach the
privacy policy as it is against the principles of person-centred care that I am following during
the delivery of care. Along with this, I should maintain the professional competency as it will

help me to maintain the professional competency during delivery of care. The professional
competency is the concept of nursing that is associated with the improvement of quality of
care of the patient ( Karami et al., 2017). Hence, I should always follow this core value of
nursing during the care delivery as my main goal is to provide a good quality care to the
patients by taking right decisions without hampering the quality of care. Along with this, I
should stick to the approach of person-centred care as breaching of the identified values and
beliefs will not allow me to provide an unbiased care to the patients by affecting my decision
making processes.
