To detect and prevent crime in a society and to maintain law and order, police departments exist
there. In United States, every state of the country has its police department that has their own
policies and practices. The objective of this paper is to develop an understanding on New York
Police departments (NYPD) and its functions. In addition to this, the paper will also highlight
some differences between the subjective police department and other police departments of
United States.
Starting the discussion on NYPD, this is to state that the same is different from other police
departments in terms of number of officers. It is the “largest” and “one of the oldest” municipal
police department of the country. It consists of nearly 36000 officers along with 19000 civilian
employees (Sisak and Mustain). The department has a long history as it has been established in
1845 and is liable to 8.5 million citizens of New York City. The department is working well for
ensuring the law enforcement in city during the past 25 years; a major decline can be seen in
property and violent crime. In order to discuss the work of this department, this is to state that the
same task and responsibility of the department is to enforce the law in addition to prevention of
crime in the respective city. In conjunction with this lead task, it also provides important
information to businesses, residents, workers, and visitors regarding different law enforcement
topics. These topics are related to property protection, licenses, security surveys, permits and so
on. Locations of missing person or a suspect in a criminal case are also some of the important
tasks that NYPD do. At the official website of this department, details related to services of the
same can be seen which is majorly divided into four categories namely law enforcement,
community, victims of crime and property & vehicles. The department also put outreach efforts
for those members of the city who belongs to communities that are more vulnerable.

From above mentioned discussion, it becomes clear that the respective department is engaged in
providing various kinds of services and facilities to citizens in order to fulfill its lead objectives.
Now to differentiate this department from police department of other states, this is to mention
that the same has adopted some unique practices and policies. Crime stopper program is one of
such steps taken by NYPD where the same offer Tips hotline to public that lead to arrest as well
as indictment of a violent felon. NYPD operate this program with the help of the police
foundation (New York City Police Department).
The another initiative taken by NYPD is Neighborhood policing which influence the way in
which NYPD keep the “neighborhood” safe for citizens (Nandi). Under this program NYPD
assigned “Neighborhood Coordination Officers” for different sectors that remain there during
their tour. The department also seems different from other departments in terms of strategic
initiatives where “Office of Management Analysis and Planning” is one of the important arm for
this department. The office assist NYPD in relation to maintenance and review of crime
reporting system concerning to “the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program” and “New
York State Division of Criminal Justice Services.” This department is more concerned regarding
appearances, rank and status.
As mentioned above, this is the largest municipal department of USA it develops their plans and
policies accordingly. The department carrying unique way to enforce law in the area of
dangerous driving where the same review data related to weekly NYPD meeting in TrafficStat
meetings (Nyc.gov). In addition to the above, department also differentiate itself from other
police department in terms of use of technology and equipment. Although some of other police
departments such as California and los angles are also using technology in their operations, yet
NYPD seems ahead of them as it use “Military-grade flashlights”, “Belt-worn trauma kits”,

“CompStat 2.0” and other tools that help police officer of NYPD to work in more effective and
efficient manner. “Body Armor Replacement Program” is one of the significant initiatives taken
by NYPD that is funded by “New York City Council”. The new vests are able to mode an
officer’s unique shape (Dsm.com). In this way, the department is adopting different practices and
taking initiatives to increase its efficiency on a regular basis.
To conclude this paper this can be stated that NYPD is different from other police departments of
the country in terms of using technology, number of officers and approaches taken by the same.
