is to maintain and promote the health and working capacity of the workers. They try to improve
the workplace environment so that employees can work safely without any tension.
Occupational health management develops the working culture in the organization. If there is no
such management then it will become difficult for the employees to work. They will be more
exposed to harmful problems and diseases. This management improves the morale of the
employees and reduces insurance costs. There will be less of absenteeism and productivity of the
organisation will increase. For this report, the organisation taken is BHP Billiton. In this report,
the details of the BHP will be studied. Then the health risks and hazards will be found out. A
healthcare program will be recommended to them so that health issues get reduced.

the employees at the workplace.

BHP is known as BHP Billiton. This is a multinational Anglo-Australian mining company. It is
headquartered at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. BHP was founded by Broken Hill Proprietary
Company Limited in the year 1885. They mainly deal with iron ore, petroleum, coal, natural gas,
copper, nickel and uranium. The revenue of the company is US$ 43.638 billion. There are 62,000
employees currently working in the company. BHP operates worldwide and is the third largest in

Melbourne (BHP.com, 2019). The main mining operations take place in Australia, North and
South America. They are having operations of petroleum in Australia, US, Tobago and Trinidad,
UK and Algeria. The workers are generally male as this is the mining industry. However, the
company is following diversity rule and so they have females also working for them. BHP has
long working hours and employees have to strictly follow the rules. The employees are unable to
manage their work and personal life due to BHP. The employees are paid well but they have to
face many problems. The employees are between 30 to 50 years of age. As BHP is one of the
largest companies in the world hence, they hire an experienced set of people. At BHP employees
can work for 30 years. The employees are frequently exposed to many health hazards in the
company as the work is completely related to mining. Accidents can take place like loading and
unloading of materials, inspection and testing of mines, working from height and fire in the mine
(Smith et al., 2016). There are problems due to dust and fumes. It causes pulmonary disease to
the employee. The surrounding water resources also get contaminated due to mining and hence
the general public suffers because of it. BHP is trying to bring sustainable programs so that

body gets distressed and fatigued. It also results in heat stroke and more major health issues. This
issue occurs because the body is unable to control its internal temperature. This happens due to
the work rate, heavy mining clothes. The body gets overheated and dehydration takes place.
There are many risks to the health of the employees due to thermal stress. Employees can face
occupational illness, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, heat syncope, skin rashes and diseases and
death. These risks are assessed at BHP by the first aid centre they have. It is seen that employees
are frequently visiting the centre for getting themselves treated. They also have complained of
the increasing skin rashes and illness.

can lead to certain diseases like musculoskeletal disorder. Then the risk needs to be assessed.
After this, there should be some control on the risk and finally, the risk control should be
reviewed. In many organisations, risk management is important because they help in creating
awareness of the hazards. They look after the need for control program requirements for a

trust within the employees and hence they won’t be leaving the company. The goals of the
program are:

10.1 Monitoring, evaluation of success and effectiveness of Occupational Health
Management Program
The occupational health management program will be monitored and evaluated to understand the
rate of success. The senior management team will go through all the records and the number of
employees who participated in the awareness program. The CEO of BHP Billiton will personally
check all the medical records and employees who attended this medical camping. The CEO
along with the managers will try to see the main causes of thermal stress. They will see the
common disease or issue that takes place due to thermal stress. The records from the new health
application will be checked and the success rate will be measured through it. The achievement of
this health program will be when most of the employees are treated and free from thermal stress.
The effectiveness of the program will completely be dependent on the employees. If all the
