AI Summary
This document presents a network design for an office building, addressing the needs of a company moving into a new space. The design includes detailed specifications for network cabling using Cat 6 cables, network devices such as Cisco routers and switches, and the configuration of servers, including file, email, application, and database servers. The design also covers the connection between servers and network devices, emphasizing redundancy and security measures like DMZ zones. The document justifies the design choices, particularly the use of multiple links for redundancy and increased bandwidth, and includes a physical network diagram. The project is completed as a part of the IFSM 370 course at UMUC.

NETWORK DESIGN FOR OFFICE BUILDING
Network cabling plan
For connecting the workstation with the switch installed in the closet cat 6 cables are
needed to be used since it supports power over Ethernet and has bandwidth of 200 MHz. Cat 6
cables can be combined with AWG conductor for the reduction of signal noise and interference.
It can support 10000mb/s transfer speed for a range of 100 meters. The cat 6 cables are needed
for the installation of wireless access point and reduces the need of electrical power outlet and
thus reduces the cost of network deployment in the office.
Network device specification
For the development of the network framework Cisco devices are used since it provides a
wide range of product for different working environment and is known for the long term stability
of its products. The following are the network devices installed in the first floor of the building:
2 x Cisco SG300-28 28-Port Gigabit Managed Switch
1 x Cisco 2900 Series router
The following are the network devices installed in the Second floor of the building:
2 x Cisco SG300-28 28-Port Gigabit Managed Switch
The following are the network devices installed in the 3rd floor of the building:
2 x Cisco SG300-28 28-Port Gigabit Managed Switch
Connection between servers and network devices
Four servers are installed in the second floor of the building and one of them is
configured as file server, second one as email server, third as application server and the fourth as

database server. The servers are installed with two NIC interface for connecting with the network
switch installed in the both end of the floor. The servers are installed in a DMZ zone such that
they physical access is restricted and they are kept secured from unauthorized access (Szigeti et
al., 2018). Copper cross over cables are used for the connection where one end of the pin are of
T568A and the other end have T568B. The structured cabling standards are followed and used as
the backbone cable.
Router and the switch is connected using a straight through cable and it have the standard
of 10BASE-T Ethernet. The same colour of the wire is used for each of the pin for both the end
of the RJ 45 jack. EIA/TIA T568B or T568A standard is used for the determination of colour
wire (Hlozak et al., 2017).
Justification
The server is connected with two links with the network for maintaining redundancy and
increasing the availability of the server. The servers are installed in the central of the network
and can be accessed from any end and thus a link fail or congestion in the network can drop the
network performance. The use of multiple link helps in increasing the bandwidth capacity and
creating a automatic failover. If one of the link goes down the other link can be used for
transmission of data packets and thus the availability of the servers can be improved. Cat 6
cables are recommended for establishing the link since audio/video application would be send
and received and the cable is the new industry standard for transmission of higher frequency of
250 MHz.
