Internet technology has created huge changes in our daily lives. People across the world have
been utilizing the internet for almost all purposes in the market. There have been several
benefits provided by the internet in daily lives. However, there are many limitations and
threats occur due to the utilization of the internet (1). This study aims at identifying several
online scams and threats over the internet. This study has also focused on critically analysing
its effect on the systems and other organizations. There are many individuals who have
experienced online scams in the society regardless of age, gender and economic condition.
Therefore, this study has helped in providing strategies for mitigating these issues related to
online scams.
Abstract
The main issues discussed in this study has been related to online scams and fraud in Saudi
Arabia. Online scams and frauds have reached at global level in business sector and financial
transaction. The negative impact of online scams have been affecting financial condition of
the country. It has drawn attention of many organizations towards its solutions over the
internet. Several researches have been done in this context and this study has referred to these
past studies based on online threats and scams. Several reports have been studied which
shows drastic changes in the financial condition. Therefore, this study has focused on certain
issues by which online scams are done over the internet and its effect in the systems. There
are several mitigation strategies mentioned in the study that might help in reducing and feel
safe from online scams.

Introduction
There have been drastic changes in the market with the effect of the internet technology.
Internet technology has made several opportunities for many businesses in the market.
However, there are several limitations included in the usage of internet technology. Several
reports have reported about online scams and cyber-attacks as biggest threats in 21st century.
A general explanation of fraud is a set of deceptive activities which are engaged by partner in
any business for personal gains deals with falsification of information in a business (2).
Online fraud refers to performing these false activities over the internet. The penetration of
the internet not economic and financial activates in every sector has led to changes in
business transactions. There has been rapid increase in online version of every sector. E-
commerce sector has been increasing at a rapid pace. There has been enhancement of online
transaction across the world. Therefore, hackers and scammers are targeting these online
transactions. This study has helped in identifying different ways of scamming and fraud.
Several factors affecting online scams have been notified in this study. Different approaches
for mitigating such issues of scams have been mentioned in this study.
Literature Review
Most internet users in the UAE have been a victim of online scams. Cybercrime threats have
been increased in the country. These online scams and crimes are difficult to prove and
scammers are targeting UAE people as their economic statuses are worldwide famous (3).
There have been high usage of mobile phones and laptops by individuals in the country.
Online frauds have been increasing for personal gains. The usage of online facilities
including financial transaction have been leading to online scams. The internet and online
businesses have been creating opportunities for business platforms around the globe for
engaging users and customers in businesses. Online scams ca be dine in several ways.

Phishing: Phishing has been one of the common form of online scams. It can be dine with the
help of fake emails and websites that meant to induce users for disclosing their personal
details including bank account details or passwords. These breached data help in getting
access to their financial accounts and debit a huge amount from their account (10). Phishing
is usually done with the help of fake emails as these are easy to handle and does not require
any financial help. These fake emails are sent on behalf of banks, credit cards companies and
fake companies. They request user to change their passwords or update their detail on any
link attached with fake mail. The texts included in these fishing mails are attractive and
persuasive which drags user attention to click and do according ti the provided text in the
mail. Once a customer clicks on these fake links, all details about the account transfers to the

Online Investment Scams: Online investment scam has been a sophisticated type of online
scam as it require certain amount of knowledge related to financing and accounting (5). An
individual with basic knowledge of finance might be a victim of this type of scam. There are
lot of advertisement of online investment schemes over the internet. They promise to increase
the amount invested within minimum period of time. These companies are non-existent types
and only online presence is there. Therefore, users cannot claim back their invested amount.

Individuals used to store their personal data over the online storages at different places over

Users need to be educated about online security and privacy. Major IT companies in the UAE
have been neglecting such issues and ignoring effects of these online scams in the economy.

quantification of data that becomes measurable and subject to principles (13). This approach
led to statistical analysis for testing objectives and hypothesis created in the study. Qualitative
research is designed for helping people about social and cultural contexts related to the study.
This helps researchers to understand and gather subjective knowledge related to study. This

helps in making qualitative methodological approach suitable for study of socio-cultural
issues that needs utilization of natural settings of study. Qualitative research helps in allowing
data collection in a flexible and comfortable with participants which allow them for giving
both facts and identification of issues. This helps increasing quality of qualitative data
gathered and enable detailed representation of subject matter (15). Therefore, qualitative
approach will be selected in this research for identifying online scams and its effect on
systems.
Data can be collected by either primary or secondary collection method. Primary data
collection method focuses on collecting data and information from raw sources of data.
Primary data has been based on raw and statistical data. Primary data can be collected from
online survey. Secondary data collection method has been based on the subjective data form.
Secondary data can be collected from online journals, articles and papers. Interviews will be
done with IT security experts that will help in gathering data regarding online scams and its
effects on systems.
Data will be analysed using qualitative method. Qualitative data analysis method focuses on
data collected from secondary data sources. Thematic analysis will be done by creating
themes based on the research topic (1). The thematic coding element has been necessary in
