Homework Assignment
AI Summary
This assignment provides a detailed overview of open-source software, defining it as software with publicly available source code that users can modify and distribute, highlighting Drupal and PostgreSQL as examples. It then transitions to big data, describing it as a combination of structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data used for machine learning, predictive analysis, and other advanced applications. The assignment further explains the 3Vs of big data—volume, variety, and velocity—and illustrates how organizations leverage big data for pricing strategies, customer attrition prediction, and social media popularity algorithms, ultimately aiming to improve business decision-making through advanced analytics techniques. This document is available on Desklib, a platform offering a wide range of study tools and resources for students.

Q1: Talk about open source software in details. And give two examples with briefly
information about each one?
Open-source software is the type of software in which the code source code is published
under the license under which the copyright holder grants the users the freedom to review,
modify and distribute the software for any reason, to anyone (Steiger, Häner and Troyer 2018).
The open-source applications can be created freely and collaboratively. Open-source software is
the popular example of collaborative sharing. The creation of collaborative-source software will
offer many viewpoints to those of a particular organization. Open-source software is typically
simpler to access than the proprietary software, which also contributes for the increased use.
Moreover, the availability of the standard's open-source implementation may increase the
adoption of the standard.
Examples of two open source software are Drupal and PostgreSQL.
Drupal
Drupal is the open-source as well as a free online content management system written
under the General Public License and distributed under PHP. Drupal is also used by applications
for information management as well as for business collaboration (Adhoni and Al Hamad 2014).
Drupal also considers itself to be the framework for web applications.
PostgreSQL
PostgreSQL is a popular system with open source database, which is the general purpose
as well as object-relational DBMS. PostgreSQL had been designed for running on systems
similar to UNIX. PostgreSQL is the free software as well as being open source. The source code

of this software is available under the open source license. PostgreSQL is used used, modified, as
well as distributed in any form (Obe and Hsu 2017). Due to its reliability PostgreSQL needs very
limited sustained efforts.
Q2: Big data begin used by many organizations these days.
Talk about it?
Big data is the combination semi structured, unstructured and structured data gathered by
companies that can be used for knowledge purposes and used in machine learning programs,
predictive analysis, and the other advanced analytics applications (Gandomi and Haider 2015).
Big data collection and storage systems have become the standard component of organizations
data management architectures. The 3Vs also describe big data: the wide volume of the data in
many settings, the broad variety of the data types contained in big data systems and the velocity
at which the data is generated, processed and collected.
How the organization use it and why?
Big data is used in multiple ways by organizations. Here are some of the instances of
usages of big data: using big data to assess discounting as well as pricing for specific or unique
offers based on the context of the structure and past offers.
Using big data for predicting SaaS business customer attrition
Predict which workers will leave the organization within the given timeframe
Various rating algorithms, trying for predicting who is most popular on social media
The main aim of big data is for helping the businesses to make business decisions that
will be more informed by allowing the predictive modelers, data scientists as well as other

analytics practitioners for analyzing the vast amounts of data transaction, and other types of data,
which can be untapped by traditional business intelligence programs. With the technical tools
widely used as part of the Advance Analytics rules and regulations like Text
Analytics, Predictive Analysis Data Mining and Statistical Process, big data can be analyzed.
