Journal and Reflective Writing
AI Summary
This journal entry is an article review focusing on 'Open Source Solutions for Building IaaS Clouds' by Barkat, Dos Santos, and Ikken (2015). The review examines the architecture and features of various open-source cloud platforms including OpenStack, CloudStack, Eucalyptus, OpenNebula, and Nimbus. The methodology involves secondary data analysis, drawing on existing research to compare these platforms. The findings highlight the functionalities of each platform, such as OpenStack's components (Nova, Neutron, and Swift), CloudStack's management capabilities, Eucalyptus' hybrid cloud support, OpenNebula's virtual infrastructure management, and Nimbus' research-focused applications. The review concludes with reflections on the complexities of cloud data storage and the importance of understanding each platform's specifications. The student emphasizes the significance of comparing these open-source tools to aid business enterprises in selecting the most suitable cloud computing solutions.

Barkat, A., Dos Santos, A. D., & Ikken, S. (2015). Open source solutions for building IaaS clouds.
Scalable Computing: Practice and Experience, 16(2), 187-204.
INTRODUCTION
The cloud computing services are very much important as it helps the business
enterprises to allow the optimization of the resources. The application of the cloud
computing services are very much important to minimize the cost involved in business
enterprises as well as the energy consumption of the enterprises. Affordable payments
and privacy controls are provided by most of the reputed cloud service providers. Wide
range of open source solutions are readily available in the market which are needed to
be analyzed before choosing it such as Nimbus, Open Nebula, Cloud stack and Open
stack.
Purpose of the research: The purpose of this research paper is to focus on the general
architecture of the different types of open cloud platforms software. The specifications if different
types of cloud platforms are very much important for the researchers of this document to
understand the compatibility associated with the enterprise.

Data Collection Methods / Data Source: Secondary data sources were
considered as the data collection procedure of this paper as opinions were
considered from other researchers unlike the primary data collection
procedure which involves participants and group discussion.
Data Analysis: The data analysis technique which is considered in this paper
is qualitative data analysis technique as the collected data is entirely
subjective and non-numerical.
RESULTS
Findings or Results (or main points of the article): The important points which was
considered in the paper are as followings:
Open Stack: Released in the year 2010, only 5GB of data can be stored in this cloud
computing platform. There are three components of Open stack such as Nova, Neutron and
Swift.
Cloud Stack: Written in Java, this cloud computing software can be very much useful in
most of the business enterprises, it supports features such as the data center orchestration,
management and administrators of the users. The cloud computing infrastructure is readily
used by most of the global organizations all around the world such as Nokia. All resources
in the cloud infrastructure can be managed entirely with the help of this cloud computing
platform. This computing software has numerous levels such as the architectural level,
management server and networking.
Eucalyptus: This open source IaaS product can be very much important to manage the
hybrid and private clouds. There are very low compatibility issues associated with the use
of this cloud computing software. There are different logical level associated with this
cloud computing software such as the cloud level, cluster level, and the node level.
Open Nebula: It is one of the most used virtual centers which are used all over the world.
Heterogeneous virtual infrastructures are managed with the help of this cloud computing
platform.
Nimbus: This open source tools are mostly used in research purposes, the resources owners
can manage the resources in the cloud with the help of this cloud open source solution. The
cloud servers can be entirely customized by the IT experts in this open source solution. The
Nimbus Workspace Service are very much important to manage the remote protocols of the
cloud servers, the NWS works closely with the Virtual Manager.
DISCUSSIONS
Document Page
Conclusions/Implications (for your profession): This research paper helps in concluding the
features provided by each of the open source cloud platforms. The detailed knowledge about
these open source tools can be very much important to deal with the complexities which are
found once the enterprises starts using the cloud service.
REFLECTIONS
Student’s Reflections (changes to your understanding): According to me, there are lots of
complexities associated with the storage of essential business data in the cloud servers. I believe
that the specifications of each of the open source cloud computing software can be very much
important to understand the diversities of each tool in a detailed manner. The comparison of each
of the software was very much helpful to for the management team of business enterprises to
understand their exact cloud computing open source tools.
