Question 1
Operations management can be defined as the area under management which is
mainly related to the process of design and controlling the different processes related to
production, redesign of the business operations and the finally the production of the services
or goods.
Question 2
The decisions that are taken by the operations managers are mainly related to
management of quality, capacity and process design, designing the layout and formulating
strategies, job designing and human resources, management of supply chain, scheduling the
production processes, maintenance. The examples of decisions taken by operations managers
are, solving issues faced by the employees, taking care of the organizational processes and
taking decisions related to supply chain (Sap-project.ca., 2018).
Question 4
The three major functions of the business that are taken care by the operations
managers are, marketing, finance and operations. Operations is related to the timely
production of services and goods and thereby managing the inputs, which include, machine
time and the time of the workers as well. The major function of the finance department
includes the management of the assets, cash flows and the investments of the organization
that are related to the production of machines. The role of marketing involves the generation
of sales and thereby searching for customers (Sap-project.ca., 2018).

The top 100 companies of the Fortune magazine in the year 2017 are mainly related to
the industries like, retail markets, mobile sector, health sector and online retailing. The

common factor between these companies is the rise in the revenues of the organization in the
last two to three years.

Total Quality management is related to meeting the various needs and desires of the
customers.
Just-in-time is related to the philosophy of reducing the inventory by receiving the
goods just at the time of production, which helps in reducing the waste caused by the
organization. Reengineering is the process of analysing the business processes and the
workflows within the organization.

The environment of operations management is quite different from the way it was
some years ago. The demands of the customers have increased and they now expect more
speed, lower costs and better quality as well. The environment has now become service
oriented and global in nature. The cooperation between the companies have increased with
the help of information technology. Outsourcing of services have also increased in the
improved OM environment (Sap-project.ca., 2018).
