1THE OPPORTUNITIES OF NEW MEDIA ROLES CAN IMPACT FOR DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION
Abstract
Technology is considered as one of the most important area in the globalization era. The
new media has intruded in all sectors of human’s life in bringing the world closer to the human.
The innovation of the technology of new media is considered to be evolved ahead of traditional
media because of the interactive characteristics that are involved in the technology. The whole
world is substantially transformed into a world where most of the works are done through media.
The new media is made the world a digitized world so that it can be accessible to all people. The
technology of new media has given an interaction of public domain that comes in various forms
in knowledge and information sharing sector. A technological revolution declining is being
provided by new media technology in the area of e-generation.
This research proposal gives a detail of the new media. The functions of the technology
of new media are elaborated in this article. There are many application of new media technology
which is clearly described in this research paper. The method of research that is done is
deductive methodology in collecting data interviewing various students in different universities
of Singapore. The findings of the research are given in this paper.

3THE OPPORTUNITIES OF NEW MEDIA ROLES CAN IMPACT FOR DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION
Introduction
There are many reasons for using the new media in the design and technology education.
New media provides many motivational reasons for the technology education. People get excited
by the use of new media. Teachers explain that by using the new media, they can motivate the
students to go through their courses which may have videos, animations and can have iterative
information given to the students (Manovich 2001). People shows positive attitude towards the
learning from new media. New media can help to make the learning process much easier and
help to connect with the learners easily. There are many new media technology which enhances
the process of design and technology education (Means et al. 2010). There are some concepts
which determine the main things that are involved in design and technology. Internet is the main
thing that is involved with the existence of new media. There are mainly five principles that are
stated in the technology of new media (Sharples 2000). The principles are numerical
representation, variability, automation, modularity, and transcoding. The modularity of new
media consists of pixel, sound, and code images. These principles create the main difference in
separating the new media technology from the old media technology. This research paper shows
the benefits and disadvantages of using the new media technology in the field of design and
technology.
Hypothesis:
1. There is a significant relationship between the use of the new media and its usability
2. There is a significant relationship between the learning through the media and the
experimental learning facilities

Literature Review
According to Bailey and Card (2009), the new media use is unavoidable in the Design
and Technology Education. There are many different features, interactivity, hypertext, virtually,
and cyberspace in the technology of new media. New media has been widely accepted in all
profession which was stated by Theuerkauf in a conference meeting. Students and pupils are to
be aware of the new technologies that are existing and are yet to come in the future (Dumais and
Czerwinski 2001). Different styles of learning are supported by the new media technology. To
work with the new media technology, the technology should be used in a proper way by the
users.
Functions:
There are many functions of new media. In the sector of teaching and learning process,
the new media plays a vital role as mentioned by many authors (Bush 2018). The classic media
does not provide the features that are provided by the new media. CD-ROMs and websites are
technologies that provide much information to the users that are impossible for the classic media
(Eynon 2008). There are many functions in project work and design such as modelling,
animation, and simulation that cannot be performed by classic media (Kimbell 2005). Only new
media is able to perform those functions. Computer Aided Design is considered as an example of
Technology Education.
Application of new media:
There are many applications in the sector of new media. The University of Loughborough
learning technology has improved much in new media sector (Cramer et al. 2007). There is a
server associated with the university known as lboro environment which is used for virtual

learning. All the learning materials can be accessed by the students in the university. There are
also techniques for audio- visual in web. Students of Stanford University have tutored video
application and instruction in which the students had made a video tape of the lectures given in
the classes that are pre-recorded (Rouse 2015). The educations that are web enhanced has mainly
propelled in the distributed instruction that are video tutored. The new media technology has
made the learning process much more attractive and fun oriented. People at distance can see each
other over video calls and the students can also get video lectures from their teachers (Okita
2016). The students can also have a chat with the professors for the creation of virtual classroom.
There are many new types of media technologies that help in making the system better. The
types of new media are blogs, sites of social networking, Wikipedia and many more. There are
also video sharing which includes you tube and the micro blogs are very common to the young
youths for learning (Hearn and Foth 2004). First at early ages, the concept of new media was
considered as a medium for entertainment. But has changed the medium from entertainment to
the sector of learning. Students use new media technology for public participation, seeking
information, and also can do a peer learning (Staff 2014). The new media now a days is
considered as a supplement for the books and enables critical thinking among the students.
Research Methodology
The research methodology that was used for completing the research is deductive
method. 30 students were surveyed in two universities of Singapore “Kaplan Higher Education
Academy” and “LASALLE College of Arts”. The students were selected by following the simple
random process under probability sampling method. There were many questions that were asked
in the survey about the benefits and the pitfalls of new media in technology education. The
questionnaires that are made for the students and professors to ask for were close-ended for

collection of data. After conducting the survey, all the quantitative data were summarized in
tabular format and then statistical analysis applied for the whole data analysis process. This has
been done with the help of tools available in MS Excel software. And for hypothesis testing,
SPSS software is used.
