Case study on organizational behavior and effective team
Background
The reflective case study is based on the department 8101. Department 8 101is the part of a plant
engaged in the production of electricity in Australia. Hank is the supervisor of the department in
8101. The management of the company decided to replace the hank with the Rita for improving
supervision and production. From the day Rita appointed as a supervisor problem raised among
the Rita and the team. Rita for one week observed the people and in the next week, she took a
meeting with the employees. She changed the break time from 30 minutes to 20 minutes and
formed rigid policies for the employees. The group was unhappy about the changes. Day by day
Rita was becoming strict with the rules and regulations. Rita applied a huge amount of burden
upon the employees. Rita started suspending employees and arguing with the employees for their
work. Terry and Denny were the employees and she changed their shift timing without
consulting with them.
Terry went on lunch and came back from lunch drunk. Rita assigned him a task and he refused to
do the task. He said to Rita “I am not going to do a damn thing”. Denny tried to control the
situation however Rita told her to stay out of it. Terry was constantly arguing with the Rita and
Rita suspended him on the spot. In the night all the employees met at a place and Denny told the
whole situation to them. They all decided to get rid of from Rita.
The group of employees decided to take revenge from Rita and started making mistakes again
and again. The production was going down and the quality of the work was low as well. Top
management took a meeting with the employees and all the employees complained that Rita is
pressurising them. The top management fired Rita form the job because of the poor management
of the team.
Current status: The department 8101 was without any supervisor. The top management has no
idea how to manage the employees and they hired an organizational consultant for resolving the
problem. The top management hired a supervisor named Daniel who positively responds to the
team and encourages the team to do the work correctly. From day one, he started interacting with
the employees and started resolving the problems. The employees were very impressed by

Daniel and they started working more efficiently. All the employees worked together and they
enhanced the overall production of the department. It is essential for the management of the
employees that the team leader should be positive towards the employees. The positive attitude
and good leadership of Daniel managed the employees and their effective working resulted in
greater production and greater profit. Now the department 8101 is now in the top 5 departments
of the plant.

Effective team and leadership
Effective team and leadership are essential for the attainment of the organisational goals in an
appropriate manner. In the case of Rita, she was unable to be a leader as she was only imposing
the rules and regulations on the employees. This was the only reason employees hated her and
started taking revenge. The qualities of the leadership include good communication with the
employees, accountability, the inspiration for others and so on. There were a lot of flaws in the
leadership of the Rita that is why employees were not loyal towards her. She was not able to
form an effective team. An effective team is a team that works together for the accomplishment
of the common goal and helps out each other for completing the work on time.
Daniel was a good leader and he was able to make an effective team. For a good leader, it is
important to communicate with the team from time to time. He was performing his duty properly
and the employees were happy from him. Just because of his leadership they were performing
their duties and job in a good manner. In the supervision of Rita, not a single employee was able
to perform their job correctly and they were intentionally making mistakes. The way she
suspended terry was inappropriate. For encouraging employees and to perk up their productivity
the leader should form good relationships with the employees. The behavior of Rita was not
good with the employees. For a leader, it is necessary to maintain an effective relationship- with
the employees.

Conclusion
From the case study, it has been concluded that effective teams are necessary to carry out the
operations of the business. Two questions arise from the case study these are as follows:
What Rita should have done to manage the employees?
What is the importance of relationships in the organisation?
Question1 what Rita should have done to manage the employees?
The management style adopted by Rita for managing the employees was not correct. Rita should
keep a positive attitude towards the employees. In the first week, Rita only observed the
employees instead of observing the employees she should come and talk to the employees. The
management style was not correct as she was rude and rigid with the employees. For a leader
positive attitude and good behavior are necessary. Rita should interact with the employees and
should ask the employees the problems they are facing. Rita should positively influence the
employees to perform their tasks and jobs.
There is conflict in the management style of Rita. The management style adopted by the Rita was
not appropriate. She was only assigning the work to the employees and she was distancing
herself from the employee that was the reason she could not supervise the employees. Rita
should have created a good relationship with the employees In order to supervise them
accurately.
Question 2 what procedures and policies should be adopted by the organisation?
The top management did the mistake in hiring the replacement of hank. There were a lot of flaws
in the leadership of Rita. Before the Rita group of employees was successful and they were
performing their jobs correctly. Top management should have taken care of before hiring the
replacement Hank as the Hank was doing well. Top management did a horrible job in hiring
Rita. A manager is responsible for carrying on the operations of the organisation hence a
manager should be hired carefully.
Top management should be very careful in hiring the employees. Hank was good at managing
the employees and the employees were completing their work on time. At the time of hiring a
manager the management should carefully measure the personality and then should make a

decision. In the organisation there must be suitable and correct policies for the hiring of
managers so that the employees will remain together and will complete their tasks on time.
