Organisations do sets some targets and to achieve them it is mandatory to give motivation
to the employees so that it can be achieved in set time frame. In today's life it is important for the
organisations to keep the members motivated because of daily increasing competition in market
and it is a key to achieve the set target by increasing morale so that they work accordingly in a
smarter way and for that sometimes they get paid also in a great amount in some sort bonuses.
Motivation means to encourage a person to complete a particular task by giving him various
reasons to finish it more enthusiastically and positively. Since the introduction of organisation
many thinkers have come up with various theories to find out how and by what techniques
employees can be motivated to work and get positive results. Hence, a number of theories are
introduced (Farndale, Hope-Hailey and Kelliher, 2011).
Along with this, Maslow's Need Hierarchy theory mostly used by BBC can also use these
theories which comes under the content theory in order to motivate their employees from time to
time. This will encourage them and thus as a result employees will put their 100 percent to
achieve company' s targets.

of hierarchy. He says that every individual desires these need but its urgency depends from
person to person and from time to time. He also states that as soon as one need is fulfilled the

(Source- McLeaod, 2017)
Physiological needs- In this the person craves for the basic necessity of life that is
required to survive. He states that air, food, water, clothing and shelter are the basic things
required to live and hence it is the first and foremost need of every individual (Maslow's
Hierarchy of Needs, 2017).
Safety Needs: Once the basic needs are fulfilled an individual crave for its safety needs.
He feels the need to live his life safely and securely. He not only wants himself to be safe but he
also wants his family to be safe and live peacefully (Bird, Saalfeld and Wüst, 2010). It includes
all social , economic and health factors. To fulfil these need it require more money and hence the
person is motivated to work more.
Social Needs:Man is a social animal and hence like to be a part of some or other group.
He believes in socialising and hence feels the need to be loved, cared and have friends.
Self Esteem Needs:It specifies an individuals self respect and self esteem. Its builds up
confidence, gives employee recognition and thus motivates him. If these needs are not fulfilled
person feels helpless and of no use to the organisation.
Self Actualisation Needs: This is the last and final need in the hierarchy model . Here
the person urge is to become what he actually wants to become and in what he is best at. This
need is never fulfilled as new opportunities and challenges come every day .
