INTRODUCTION
Organisational behaviour (OB) is an study which includes the way in which people
attract in a group. Main concept behind this approach is that scientific methods of
management can be applied on workers. Its theories are used to maximize output of human
resource from individuals to teams. This report is about organisational behaviour in BBC
which is an British broadcasting company. Relationship between organisation culture and
performance of individuals and group will be discussed. This study also consists ways in
which employees cab be motivated to achieve business goals. Various leadership styles are
followed by different companies in order to encourage staff for shared objectives. This report
will include some leadership styles and their impact on performance of workers of BBC.
Importance of team work will also be highlighted through this study. It would explain
benefits of technology in building effective and efficient team in an organisation.
TASK 1
P1 Explain how culture can influence performance of individuals and teams
Organisational culture and structure are related with each other and have substantial
impact on performance of business (Robbins, and Judge, 2013.). Organisation structure
includes rules and policies designed for various roles and responsibilities in a company. It
also determines flow of information from level to level.
Organisation culture refers to value system in an organisation for managers and other
employees. It consists shared beliefs, values, norms, assumptions and language. This explains
the way in which employees and management handles outside business transactions.
Organisation culture reflects from dress code, business hours, setup of office, turnover and
recruitment decision and various other elements of business. Organisation culture of BBC can
be identified through Handy’s four types of cultures-
Power culture- This type of culture can quickly respond to events but these are highly
dependent for continued success (Pinder, 2014). The main power base in this culture is
control of resources. This type of culture relies more on individuals. In this performance is
judged on the basis of results. Such organisations believes that employees will do exactly
what power holders expects. This type of culture is more of dictatorship nature.
Role culture- This type of organisation includes strong functional and specialised
areas. Position is the main source of power in this culture. Procedures and rules are main
methods to influence. Efficiency of this culture depends on allocation of tasks and
responsibilities rather than individual personalities. Such kind of organisations can achieve
success in stable environment. This culture faces difficulty when changes occurs.
Task culture- Such cultures are job or project oriented and these are associated with
organisations that works on the basis of project based structure. The main emphasis of this
scenario is getting job done. It depends on group power to improve efficiency. This culture
depends on team work to achieve certain targets.
Person culture- Such culture is not found in most of the organisations. Individuals are
the main focus in this culture. It exists just to serve persons and assists individual on their
own interests rather than overriding objectives.

It can be identified from above mentioned types of cultures that, BBC used to follow
Power culture. This company has been described as bureaucratic. Staff criticised the top
management for not promoting employees who are working from long time in this
organisation. So, earlier this company is more of dictator nature.
Effect of organisational culture on performance of BBC-
Organisation culture and structure can affect decline or promote performance. It
depends on relationships and workflow influence on productivity (March, 2013.).
Performance management includes setting goals and activities by manager in hierarchy of
reporting. Without properly managed policies and procedures strategies of performance
management gets failed. Organisation culture provides set of values and rituals which helps
employees in integrating. Organisation culture of BBC plays an important role in its
performance. It provides directions to staff in which they have to behave and perform their
tasks.
Power and politics in culture of BBC affects the behaviour in BBC. Power plays huge
role in organisation. Their impact depends on its use that means whether these powers are
used in negative or positive manner. Politics can directly influence the person who has power
and it determines whether culture of company is encouraging productivity or not. Positive
power can increase productivity as it includes giving employees the power to take decisions.
It helps in building their confidence and morale and they gets motivated to work hard for
success of company. It also helps in increasing retention rates of employees which results in
improves performance of organisation. Negative power includes motivating employees by
threatening them with punishments. Under this type of powers, quality of performance
reduces as employees works under pressure.
If there will be positive politics at work place then employees will get encouraged to
become more productive. Establishing clear policies helps in making it easier for employees
to produce quality work. It should be focussed towards equality so that conflicts can be
avoided and productivity in performance of overall organisation can be enhanced.
Therefore, it can be said that culture, power and politics can help in improving
performance of BBC but it should be ensured that these elements are maintained in positive
scenario.

P2 Evaluate how motivation can help in achieving organisational goals
Motivated employees are key for success of an organisation. It is very important to
encourage them in order to create better and competitive workplace. Manager of BBC can
motivate their staff by using motivational techniques. There are various theories for
motivation that can be applied on workforce. This is very essential to build up employees
interest in achieving business objectives effectively. Some of the motivational theories that
can be used by this company are as follows-
Content theory- This type of motivation theories are focussed needs of people that
are required to be meet in order to motivate them. It includes strudies like Maslow's hierarchy
of needs, aldefer's , Herzberg's and McClelland theory etc. These concepts are based on

absence of factors that assists in motivating employees. So management tries to make these
elements in present within the organisation. Examples of this theory are as follows-
Maslow’s hierarchy of need theory- This theory is based on various human based
approach that they expect to fulfil their needs at different levels. It is arranged in shape of
pyramid.

The bottom of this pyramid includes physiological needs and top includes growth
needs of an individual. By using this method, manager of BBC can satisfy its employees
needs by providing good workplace scenario (Suppiah and Singh Sandhu, 2011). Their
safety needs can be fulfilled and through social needs they can be made more effective in
communication and team building exercises. Finally, by fulfilling self actualization needs
their growth and development could be facilitated. This theory will improve their overall
motivation level.
Herzberg’s motivation theory- It includes hygiene factors vs. motivators at
workplace. This is one of the most important theory of motivation. It focuses on fulfilment of
these two factors in order to encourage workforce. Hygiene factors includes pay, physical
working conditions. Status, interpersonal relations etc. and motivational factors are
recognition, sense of achievement, responsibility etc. BBC can use this theory by satisfying
its employees through these elements.
Process theory- This theories of motivation states the ways in whchi behaviour is
affected, sustained and stopped by motiavting factors. It consists studies like expentancy,
equity, reinforcement etc. Such concepts are based on reward, preferences and sense of
accomplishment. One of the example of these theory is as follows-
Expentancy theory- This theory focuses on mental process. It includes aligning self
interest of employees with organisational goals. It includes providing rewards for better
performance. BBC can use this method as it will help in relating rewards with performance of
workforce. This will ultimately lead to overall growth of company. This approach states that,
behaviour of individual is influenced by choices of alternatives. It beleives that, performance
of employees must be motiavted as increased efforts leads to better performance. Motivated

employees always try to give their best to contribute in attaining growth for company. They
also starts believing in management and their job satisfaction increases. This helps in
reducing employee turnover which is again beneficial for this company as it reduces costs of
training for new employees.
Equity theory- Through this theory manager of BBC can understand the ways to treat
everyone equally at workplace. If one person is given more importance then it can have
demotivating impact on other. This theory states that every employee should be treated in fair
manner. When they are treated fairly then there are more chances to motivate them.
These motivation theories are very important for organisation performance in following
ways-
It is very useful in achieving better performance of employees. Manager of BBC can
use these theories in order to fulfil employee’s needs at workplace (Spector, Bauer, and Fox,
2010). This will increase employee satisfaction from job which results in highest
performance and productivity of workforce and it facilitates in attaining organisational goals.
This also helps in aligning performance with remuneration so, better outcomes can be
achieved from manpower. These theories makes employees more enthusiastic which leads to
positive change in working environment. It also transforms behaviour and attitudes of staff
and they works hard in favour of business concern. Better performance helps in enhanced
profits and high consumer loyalty. These factors ultimately helps in achieving organisational
goals and objectives in effective manner.
Impact of motivation on organisational objectives-
Motivated employees can adopt changes of business environment easily. So, it
becomes easy for BBC to cooperate and work as per changes and achieve competitive
advantages. These theories can change negative attitudes of workers into positive attitude
and they used resources of company in proper manner without doing any wastage. It reduces
operational costs and helps in more profit. Profitable company can survive easily in
competition. Therefore, motivation theories helps in achieving objectives of BBC that is
profit, survival and growth in long run. It also provides benefit of becoming market player in
specific sector with highest market share.

P3 Describe what makes an effective team as opposed to ineffective team
Teams are very important in today’s working conditions. In current corporate world
problems are so complex that teams are required for effective solutions (Reason, 2016).
Collaboration of people can assist in creative thinking and better problem solving in
organisations (Choi, 2011). There are various types of teams in BBC. Some teams are
permanent whereas some are temporary in nature. Some of the common teams at this
workplace are as follows-
Functional teams- These teams are formed on the basis of specialization and
expertise in a particular field. All the departments works independently to achieve collective
goals of company. Such teams are permanent in nature and works continuously to achieve

business goals. Examples of such teams in BBC are marketing department, finance
department, human resource department etc.
Problem solving teams- Such teams are normally temporary in nature. These are
formed to focus on a particular problem to provide solution for it. Once problem is solved
these teams are dissolved. BBC forms such type of teams in order to provide appropriate
solution for an specific issue.
Virtual teams- These teams are connected digitally. These are formed to allow easier
communication to manager and it is based on strengths and weaknesses rather than
geography. Such teams are very essential at workplace.
Cross – functional teams- These teams are formed when one department collaborates
with other to handle certain problems. It includes communication between various
departments of BBC in order to achieve any project goals.
Self managed teams- Such teams are strong in nature as its members have power of
decision making. Each team member contributes to complete assigned tasks by bringing their
skillsets in team. BBC focuses more on such kind of teams because when employees have
power, they works much better.
Project teams- Such teams are temporary in nature. These are formed to complete a
specific project and when it is finished these teams get dissolved. BBC forms such teams to
accomplish its projects.
Importance of having different types of team in BBC-
Teams are important for higher performance in an organisation. When teams are
formed people works together for common purpose and to achieve collective goals.
Members of teams shares their own ideas, skills, creative thoughts.
They performs their roles with cooperating with each other. BBC can perform much
better when their employees works effectively as teams. It is very good concept as it
creates synergy amongst people and their combined efforts are much better as
compare to individual efforts.
Performing in teams helps in applying various experiences, skills and perspectives to
solve a complex problem. It results in creating new solutions and ideas to solve any
problem.it helps in maintaining mutual supports and sense of belongingness amongst
employees.
Working in different teams is very important for this organisation as it results in
division of tasks on the basis of expertise of employees. It helps in achieving highest
possible outcomes and better results. This leads to attainment of company’s objectives
in effective manner.
Effective team building-
It is very important for BBC to have effective teams. Such teams includes healthy
discussions, creative and better ideas to solve any issue. Decision making in such teams is
way better than having ineffective teams. Such teams can be formed by adopting following
models of team development-

The first stage is forming stage in which members meets for first time. They are
cautious in behaviour (De Jong, and Den Hartog, , 2010). People try to understand
that what they will be doing in group. Conflict, controversies and personal opinions
are avoided at this stage. The main focus of members at this phase is to become
familiar with each other.
Second stage is storming in which conflicts and competition arises. Here, members
have some understanding of tasks. They gets their roles and responsibilities.
At this stage of norming groups receives clarity members have high morale. A sense
of community gets established at this phase and members starts focussing on purpose
and goals of group.
In performing stage, members becomes confident and familiar with purpose of team
and now they starts performing without supervision. At this stage of adjourning, project is completed and hence teams are dissolved. This
phase is also known as mourning because members gets close with each other and
they feel a loss of things they have experienced is over now.
Belbin’s team roles- He has introduced nine roles to develop an effective team. These
roles are as follows-
Implementer is the organizer of team who ensures disciplines, orders and task
orientation in group.
Resource investigator is the person with too many outside contacts. He is
enthusiastic, adventurous and open minded person who always looks for new
ideas.
Plant is the creative thinker who brings innovation in team.
Monitor is sensible person who analyses situations and provides right judgement
for it.
Shaper is passionate and wilful person who effectively deals with challenges and
gets things going constant (Albrech, 2011).
Coordinator is the person who coordinates overall team by looking after all
procedures and functions.
Complete finisher is the one who believes in completing each and every tasks in
perfect manner.
Team worker is the most sensible person of group who focuses on maintaining
pleasant environment and sense of togetherness amongst members.
Specialist is the one who is advisor in team because of his expertise knowledge in
an specific field.

TASK 4
P4 Apply concepts of organisational behaviour in context of an organisation
Organisational behaviour is the study of way in which people interact with each other
in teams. It is applied to create efficient business organisation. This focuses at maximizing
the output generated by members of team. Members who works efficiently can achieve
increased productivity (Berenbaum, and Beltz, 2011). Successful team includes members
who properly knows their roles and responsibilities in the group.
Path goal theory-
This theory can also be applied to improve team’s performance and productivity in
BBC. It is a type of leadership theory which focuses on making a clear path to achieve goal.
This concept believes that, team mates satisfaction, motivation and performance is dependent
on behaviour of leader. A good leader can provide right direction, set high goals, and
supports members by involving personally in tasks. If leader will be good the it will help in
more satisfaction and productive team. This concept also states that employees will receive
directions of leader properly as they thinks that it will facilitate in their future growth.
This theory is very beneficial in making team performance more effective. In BBC, it is very
essential to improve performance of team members. It provides following benefits-
Building right team- Formation of effective team starts with selecting right people to
work together. If team mates will be good then they will be more flexible with work
strategies and understanding how to compromise effectively. Team members must be able to
do the task and there should not be any kind of conflict between them. All these factors can
help in improving team performance and productivity in BBC.
Proper directions- For a good team, it is required to have appropriate direction from
superiors. Good team leader can provide proper instructions regarding projects, goals and
objectives of building team.
Accountability- Another way in which productivity and performance can be improved
is to create a system in which each person would be accountable. It includes creating internal
check and balances to ensure that every member is equally contributing to the tasks assigned.
This method is also helpful in preventing under contribution and risk of not completing the
task on time.
Barriers to effective team
Efficient team work improves bonding between team members. It helps in attaining
best performance and high productivity. But there are various barriers to effective team which
can affect overall performance of BBC. These barriers are as follows-
Bad leadership- A team without good leader cannot achieve productivity. It leads to
lack of vision, direction, and motivation to achieve team goals. It can also reduce
coordination amongst employees.
Poor communication- Another main barrier of effective team is bad communication.
A team with poor communication structure cannot provide information to members in
effective manner (Jones, 2010).

Personality clash- Every member in team are having different nature, perception,
attitude and mindset. This difference in personality reduces effectiveness of group. It is
required to make them focus towards ultimate goals by building sense of coordination and
belongingness amongst them.
Poor planning- Planning acts as an base for complete process of team building. Poor
and inefficient planning is another barrier for effective team in an organisation. If objectives
will not be clear then members cannot attain high level of productivity.
CONCLUSION
Organisational behaviour is very essential to maintain discipline in an company. It is
important to manage business effectively in today’s competitive world. There is relation
between structures and culture of firm which can affect performance of overall business.
Factors influencing individual behaviour are to be studied in order to improve their working
and make them more focussed towards business ultimate goals. Motivational theories plays
an important role in bringing employees together to achieve business objectives. It is required
to adopt leadership theories in order to attain team goals effectively. Individual behaviour is
to be studied carefully so that they can be fitted in the organisation. Technology plays an
important role in this scenario. Groups and team work is necessary for maintaining
organisational culture . Management is responsible to create work culture that facilitates
employees to give their best to growth of company. It also allows them to achieve their
personal development and satisfaction at workplace.
