Reinforcement theory of motivation is an example of theories used in organization to
guide the behavior patterns of employees. The theory links behavior of employees to its
consequences and assumes that behavior with positive consequences will be repeated and vice
versa. It can be applied in an organizational context through a number of strategies.
To start with acknowledgement of positive actions by members of the workforce by a
manager is one of the strategies that can be used to reinforce positive behavior. In this regard, a
manager may choose to praise an employee who reports to work early or completes their
allocated tasks in time. Such an employee is more likely to enjoy the praise and focus on early
reporting to work and completion of tasks (Richter, Raban and Rafaeli, 2015).
Secondly, punishment is also a strategy that can be used in the organization to reinforce
positive behavior. For example a dismissal of a stubborn and non-compliant employee would
make the remaining employees more compliant to organizational policies. It would therefore
serve as a way of discouraging negative behavior and encourage positive behavior among
employees (DuBrin, 2013).
In conclusion, reinforcement is an effective way of encouraging positive behavior in
organizations. The theory can be applied through strategies such punishment and praising of
employees.
