Organizational behaviour is study of group and individual performance within
organization. Company which will be discussed in this study is British Broadcasting Corporation
(BBC) which is having its headquarters in Westminster, London. Number of employees in
organization is highest in world which is 22,401. One of the oldest broadcasting firm in world.
Report will be covering influence of culture, power and politics on behaviour of others in
firm. Methods which are used in BBC so that employees remain motivated will be explained in
this assignment. And Concepts and philosophies of firm behaviour in a given situation will be
evaluated.
LO 1
P1 Influence of Culture, Power and Politics on Behaviour of Others in Firm
Having an effective employee team helps organization to get success. Team work is very
important since this will enable organization to achieve goals and objectives of business quickly
(Narzary and Palo, 2020).
Culture
Handy's Culture Model Task Culture- Tasks are divided between workers of organization according to skills and
interest of them so that there is a quality in functioning of firm. Staff are rewarded for
work they are doing in BBC which will maintain motivation level in employees. There
will be better team work and performance of organization will increase. As motivated
staff contributes well in accomplishing given task in effective manner, and they cooperate
other members as well hence team goal is obtained (Taylor, 2018). This helps firm in
raising productivity and meeting objective of business. Person Culture- Employees feel that they are very much important and needed in
organization. People culture will not be able to function in group, and they find
themselves superior to others which will not let effective functioning of organization.
There will be lesser team work in business which will result in slower processing in
functions. Power Culture- Decision of organization are taken by few members of organization. It is
because of this factor that employees in organization feel demotivated and functioning of

organization does not take place as planned. Team working in company will be better
because there will be more monitoring and will affect business in positive manner as it
will lead to success in market.
Role Culture- BBC is achieving goals and objectives of company by using role culture
for themselves (Punia and Shyam, 2017). Roles are given to all employees and powers
are distributed so that functioning in organization can take place better. There is a sense
of clarity of work. Team behaviour will be managed well since they all will know they
have to do and management will be able to find success.
Politics
Chantel's characteristics of politics would be helpful to understand roles and
characteristics. Due to politics in a firm there is a lot of demotivation and inefficiency in
organizations working. Individual Factors- Individuals in an organization loss interest in their work which leaves
organization with an incomplete work or work which is not meeting standards of
organization. Politics will lead to negative environment for employees who are working
in company (Leithy, 2017). Employees who are interested in politics will be disliked by
other employees which will reduce efficiency in firm since they will not want to work as
groups and business will not be able to achieve their objectives and goals. Employees of
BBC are not being able to concentrate on their own work because other individual are
more interested in spoiling each others image in organization.
Organizational Factors- Rewards in organization will be given to those who are doing
politics in organization and deserving will not get it which will lead to demotivation in
organization. Performance level of deserving employees will also reduce which will lead
to inefficiency in company which will result in conflicts in team behaviour and business
will not be able to function better. Employees who are interested in politics will not be
interested in working with full efficiency in organization. Targets and objectives of
organization will not be met.
Power
French & Raven Theory Expert- There are more skilled and experienced people in organization which need to be
respected and expertises can come in help of other employees of firm. This process can

motivate a lot of employees in organization which would result in company's benefit so
that they can achieve fair game in market. Reward- Rewards are given by BBC if employees are working efficiently in organization.
Rewards like increase in salary, promotions, bonus, etc are rewarded to employees who
are working in organization effectively (Rhoden, 2016). This will motivate employees
and will make all employees of organization work harder to get that from firm.
Motivation in workers of BBC will make organization achieve their targets on time. Coercive- When employees are not working according to standards of organization then
they are given demotion or punished for work they are doing in firm. Company has right
to fire employees if working is not performing well. Organization can lose a lot of loyal
and effective employees because of this factor which will affect efficiency and good
leaders in organization. Referent- People with referent power are liked by other employees of company because
of their charm, looks and attitude. Team behaviour in organization can get affected
because there may rise a lot of conflicts because jealously but employees who follow
them and respect set of rules which help organization to achieve objective and aims
easily. Legitimate- This power is in head of organization like CEO, owners and executives.
Decision making is in their hands which enable employees to reach those decisions from
time to time. Employees do feel unfamiliar with firm which will make their over all
performance be affected. Team working will get stronger because of monitoring and
employees will be able to reach their targets quickly which leads to success of employees
and company (Selamat, Nordin and Fook, 2017).
LO 2
P2 Motivate Individuals
Organizations will find it easy if there is motivation in employees. BBC will find it easier
to achieve their goals and objectives. Motivation can lead to employees working efficiently and
development of business (D'amato and Kim, 2016). Employees are well motivated of BBC and
to understand that further report is going to discuss theories of motivation.
Content Theory
Document Page
This theory helps to understand different factors of human need of change and why they
are changing with time. Content theory will help to motivate individual's behaviour. To
understand this theory better in context with BBC Herzberg's two factor theory will be more
beneficial.
Herzberg's two factor theory
According to this theory there are two factors which are influencing job satisfaction of
individuals which are motivators and hygiene factors. BBC considers both factors for effective
functioning of business.
Motivators
Recognition is not given to deserving employee which is creating a demotivation in
organization. Responsibilities are given to right skilled staff so that quality of work is present
(Nuckcheddy, 2018). BBC is provides promotions to employees who are putting in their personal
best in growth of business and lead to competitive advantage.
Hygiene factors
BBC is providing employees with right wages scale which is a great motivator therefore
organization is having so many employees working under them. Physical working conditions of
organization is not up to mark because of internal politics which goes on in business. BBC is
leading broadcast company in world, and they remain like that if hygiene factor is maintained by
organization.
Process Theory
Process theory is a thought help to be developed of individual by investigating their needs
and satisfy those needs to accomplish associations objective (Majumdar, 2018).
Reinforcement Theory
Reinforcement theory was proposed by BR Skinner which states that these are
consequences of functioning of themselves. This is based on “Law of Effect” which is that
individuals repeat positive consequences but not negative.
Positive Reinforcement
BBC is giving staff positive reinforcement when workers give their best in organization.
When individuals are giving business what they are required to do then employee is given
rewards like appraisal, bonus, promotion, etc (Gkorezis and Petridou, 2017). Employees will
give their best which would result in growth of business in market.
Document Page
Negative Reinforcement
There is a negative impact on employee when they are not giving in their best skilled
requirement in business (Bakotić, 2016). Trained and skilled staff is working in firm and if they
are not giving their best then BBC fires them therefore employees give their best so that they do
not have to face this negative consequence. This is done by BBC so that employees do their best
and match standards of business.
LO 3
P3 Effective Team as Opposed to an Ineffective Team
Effective team
Effective team requires for overall success of organization. Effective team would lead to
creativity and innovative ideas in company which will help company to improve and produce
new products (Elsmore, 2017). Employees share their experience and skills which will increase
overall productivity.
Ineffective team
Ineffective team is when individuals are not being able to work with one another. This
will affect overall growth of organization (Leithy, 2017). Decision- making will be tougher and
goals will not be met on time. This will also reduce communication between employees.
Tuck man's Theory
To set up an effective group Tuck man gave various stages for advancement of group
towards accomplishment of business objectives. Forming Stage- Right skilled employees should be analysed for task. Timeline has to be
created for achieving goal. Role should be cleared out and rules should be set to achieve
them which would result in efficiency of organization (James, 2017). Storming Stage- There are a lot of conflicts which can rise in this stage. Employees will
be unable to make decisions for organization. Efficiency of organization will reduce and
market will not be captured resulting in loss. Norming Stage- for smoother functioning of task staff gets to know each other and share
skills which will be efficient for all workers.
Performing- By this stage employees are ready to work together. Chances of conflicts
reduce and that will help in overall productivity in success (Chang and et.al., 2016).

Factors Affecting Effective Team Communication- Communication is most important factor in company because it is a
broadcasting industry therefore communication has to be even stronger. Gap of
communication between employees of BBC is not present, and they are a strong team to
break therefore they are leading company (Wood and et.al., 2016). Communication gap
can lead to conflicts and distribution of work which workers have to achieve is not clear. Team Size- Conflicts are there in company because there are so many ideas and creativity
which is present in all individuals which is ineffective team. Teams are also huge which
makes processing of ideas into action takes time. Effective team will have small size
groups so that they can function better since focus of everyone will be on same objective. Leadership- Leaders in company are very effective therefore success for organization is
so immense which means BBC has effective team leaders. Clarity in organization is there
and if there was ineffective team then there would have been no clarity and functioning
of organization would have been slower (Mansouri, Singh and Khan, 2018).
LO 4
P4 Philosophies Of Organizations Behaviour Within an Organization
Path Goal Theory
Path goal theory help to control representatives by analysing their need and utility of
those necessities in workplace (McShane and et.al., 2018). It helps BBC to manage
representatives for their every day work exercises in association. Leaders of organization follow
this theory for making productivity of company increase. Directive path- Leaders have to guide employees as to what BBC is expecting out of
them and leaders make employees feel their duties and responsibility towards
organization (Alqahtani, 2018). It is very important that leaders show path for that
productivity of business is constant and that will be very beneficial for company to
achieve their objectives and goals. Achievement- Professionalism and targets are given to all employees of organization so
that they know their path which they have to take. Leaders show trust in workers which
will result in confidence in success and opportunities.
Document Page
Participative leaders- Leaders make sure that all team members are participating in
achieving goals and who are not then they are motivated in helping team as well. It helps
to familiarize employees and develop a positive relation (Shah, Anwar and Irani, 2017).
Supportive leader- Health issues or any other issues are understood by leader which is
they share a healthy relationship which will make team even stronger. BBC has a strong
team therefore achieving targets is very smooth and easy for them.
Custodial organizational behaviour model
There is a need for the managers to think about the safety of the employees. This would
help an image to be built in the minds of the employees. BBC will have to improve on a few
factors like incentives, retirement plans and healthcare for the workers of the organization. This
will gain the trust of the employees who are working in BBC (Pereira, Malik and Froese, 2017).
The organization will have to fulfil the needs of the employees so that there is a development in
the performance and satisfaction. Financial packages of the employees will also have to be
improved so that they can have loyal staff in BBC.
CONCLUSION
From the above report it can be concluded that culture, power and politics do play a very
important role in any organization. It is because of the political factor which is influencing the
performance of the employees in the organization. Content and process theories which BBC is
using are making the employees satisfied with the job since their demands are being fulfilled.
Compared to ineffective team the effective team is that the goals and objectives are being met
easily.
