Introduction
Motivation is the feeling of constant encouragement and inspiration that helps any
person to reach their goal in faster way. The main objective of this essay is to identify the role
employee motivation in enhancing organizational performance. The chosen organization for
this essay is Nestle. Nestle is a multinational food and dairy firm in Australia. Nestle has
successfully diversified their products, starting from dairy products (condensed milk and
baby products) to beverages and snacks. Nestle has started its journey in the year 1866 and
later it merges with the company named Anglo- Swiss in 1950 and named as the Nestle
Group .In the year of 1880 Nestle has emerged in Australian market and by the year 1906
Australia became the second largest market for Nestle.(Nestle.com.au, 2019). In the year,
1934 Australia has achieved its greatest success by the invention of Milo (Nestle.com.au,
2019). Motivation plays a vital role in rejuvenating employee performance and organizational
productivity. It provides constant energy and acts as the catalyst for staffs to provide their
best to generate the company’s profit margin. It also helps the company to achieve its desired
goal and able to deal with major threats in the market. Now, employees of Nestle Australia
has committed to produce and deliver good food to their consumers. Nestle Australia has
developed effective leadership strategies to motivate their employees. In the Australian
market, maximum number of companies compete with each other, develop innovative
strategies and implement new techniques just to survive in the market. The two major tools
that lead the company towards success are employee motivation and organizational
performance. The greater the level of motivation the more production delivered by different
employees associated with the company.

Motivation can be defined as the process of stimulating people to achieve specific
goals and desired position. In the workplace motivation may derive from achieving different
psychological factors like: receiving high amount of salary, job recognition, job satisfaction,
reward and incentives (Dobre, 2013). Besides other resource and raw materials, employees
are considered as the major source for the Nestle to reach its target. Thus, it is important for
the company to keep their employees happy and motivated to build a good brand position in
the market across the globe (Shahzadi et al., 2014). Motivation helps to boast employee
efficiency and leads them to deliver effective production. Nestle has their own human
resource team. The primary task of this team is to ensure that all the employees enjoy their
basic organizational rights and benefits. They understand and solve critical problems of the
staffs associated with the Nestle. The main goal of the company is to serve best nutrition to
their consumers and make their brand as a leading healthy brand among the other major
similar companies present in the market.
Maslow’s Motivation Theory:
Maslow has defined his motivation theory based on the attainment of several basic
needs. This need has classified under following factors:
Psychological Needs: Maslow has clearly stated that organization should help the
employees to meet their basic psychological needs. This comprises the need for food,
water and shelter. Individuals will automatically get motivated after fulfilling these
mentioned demands. Nestle helps their employees to satisfy their basic needs of food,
clothing and shelter by providing the scope to earn and meet their basic needs of
foods, thrust and shelter (Jerome, 2013). Hence, Nestle encourages their employees
to perform their task efficiently and lead the organization to a better position in the

market. This company also facilitates their employees with proper food, water and
housing facilities
Safety Needs : Safety need comes after meeting the psychological needs. According
to the Maslow, safety needs are considered as the second basic needs for human
survival. Considering this fact in mind, Nestle has developed a program named “The
Nestle Occupational Health and Safety Management System” (NSMS) at
workplace to provide secure and safe work environment to their staffs (Nestle.com.au,
2019).The main aim to this system is to prevent accident in workplace. Nestle
promotes education culture with the purpose of preventing road accidents across the
globe. The company has their own Operational Safety and Health Risk
Management team for the welfare of different employees associated with Nestle.
Social Needs: This need comprises the need for love and belongingness. Nestle has
successfully launched a program named Nescare in order to establish an emotional
attachment or bond between the company and their employees. This program allows
the following facilities for the employees:
o It provides health facilities and financial benefits for the employees at an
emergency.
o Employees have the scope of getting a fixed amount of money as an pension
after retirement.
o Nestle also offer scopes of learning and education for their employees.
Esteem Needs: According to Maslow, people often find to get motivated after
receiving job recognition, respect, and honor from the organization (Jerome,
2013).This honor acts as a catalyst in prioritizing their tasks and effectively perform
their allocated job. Thus, any leader should motivate his employees and reward them
by respecting employees for providing their effort and contribution in making Nestle

staff. The company develops every possible measure that would help the company in
engaging their employees with the organization (Muogbo, 2013). It not only motivates the
employees but also helps the organization to improve its performance and make the path
to sustain in the market.
The Herzberg’s Two Factor Theory:
According to Herzberg’s Two Factor Theory, employee motivation can be achieved
by focusing on two major aspects like Motivators and Hygiene Factors.
Motivators Or Motivating Factors:
According to this theory in order to generate employee motivation, any firm need to
focus on such motivators that would able to engage their employees and helps the company
to attain its desired position in the market. Motivators that generate employee performance
are as follows:
o Achievement: Company should provide sense of achieving success over any difficult
task. A leader should praise his employees based on their qualities and talents that
help the organization in meeting client’s demands and requirements. This will help
the leader to motivate his staffs and inspire them to indulge in delivering effective
performance to satisfy organization’s target (Yusoff, Kian & Idris, 2013). Considering
the mentioned facts, Nestle has established rewards scheme for their employees.

o Recognition: To motivate employees, the company should provide job recognition to
their best employees, that would help the leader to make their employees attracted

based on their success rate. In recent years, Nestle has declared as the most socially
responsible company that contributes their major amount in protecting our
environment.
o The work itself: The job needs to be interesting enough that would itself helps to
engage their employees to boast their productivity (Yusoff, Kian & Idris, 2013). The
job needs to be updated with new features and techniques. Thus, Nestle has
successfully developed their marketing strategies and client dealing programs through
updated technologies and new patterns (Hur, 2018). Today’s employees believes more
in smart work than hard work and for this reason the Nestle develops multiple new
techniques that emerges in the new market system.
o Responsibility: Company needs to make their employees understand about their
responsibilities of meeting organizational objectives and build great market position.
A leader should involve his trainees in different training and product demonstrations
programs to provide them great knowledge about the brand and its different programs
(Ghazi, Shahzada & Khan, 2013). Nestle has emerged with new policies that include the
policy of compulsory training and evaluation program for new employees in the firm.
This not help the organization to understand employee potentials but also help the
trainees understand and adapt with the job role allotted to them (Malik & Naeem, 2013).
o Advancement: Company should develop policies that include promotion facilities for
their employees. This will help the company to inspire their staffs to give better
performance and make the company reach to its desired target. For this reason,Nestle

helps their employees more efficient and productive for the firm (Ozguner &
Ozguner, 2014).
Hygiene factors
o Company policies: Company should develop fair and favorable policies and
should make those policies clear to every employees associated with the firm.
Thus, Nestle provide basic study materials and policy guidelines that help the
employees understand about all the policies. Policies should same like other
competitors present in the market (Civre, Lovec & Fabjan, 2013).
o Supervision:Company should maintain fair supervision over the performance
of different employees. Nestle have their own supervision team and managers
who put their eyes on the quality of performance delivered by their staffs

o Relationships: Company should provide healthy working environment to
their staffs and should maintain friendly relationships among the
subordinates, superiors and administrative staffs. Nestle provide a friendly

A leader on behalf of the company should understand every issue that restrict
any employee to deliver the best performance.
Company should provide well equipped and hygiene work environment to
their staffs so that they (staffs) feel good in the office premises.
Company should provide job- satisfaction to their staffs by providing
different facilities to motivate them for giving unique performance (Sanjeev &
Surya, 2016).

Company should provide medical and PF facilities that help their employees
help organization in achieving company’s goal.
Company should implement promotion facilities for their employees and lead

Thus, this paper concludes that employee motivation became the most significant fact
that helps the organization to achieve their desired brand position in the market. The more the
staffs get motivated the greater the level of production they deliver. Nestle needs to maintain
hygiene level in the workplace and should offer appropriate facilities like they need to offer
proper food and housing facilities to those employee who work at night shift. Company
should arrange appraisal programs for giving awards to their best performers. This will help
the company to establish great relationship between the company and its staffs. Employee
motivation and organizational performance remain directly proportional to each other. It is
necessary for any management organization to receive positive feedback from their
employees because the reputation of the firm depends more on the client dealing capacity of
the staffs associated with the Nestle. Though, Nestle has successfully occupied the major
portion of the market they need to improvise their strategies to motivate their employees
because employees are considered as the major assets to generate company’s goal and make
the organization threat for the other similar firms. Nestle should focus more on employee
retention and provide job satisfaction to engage their employees more with the firm and attain
the desired profit from the present market.
