Introduction
Communications play a crucial role in communicating with each other in this complex
and diverse business world, either in organisational workplace settings or in digital settings
(Bell and Kozlowski, 2015). The importance of effective communication for organisational
growth cannot be denied (Kalla, 2016). This paper seeks to emphasise the value of
communication and chooses one media article and one journal article for this reason. It also
aims to shed some light on certain communication barriers and to list down some gateways
to counter those barriers. Ultimately, this paper seeks to establish a discussion by applying
certain communication principles and ideas to selected media articles and journal articles.
Media Article
Leading your company gets easier—this one skill can help you through the crisis
Summary of a selected media article
The chosen media article emphasises the powerful impact of written word
communication and offers some valuable tips for effective communication. The effective
written word communication is capable of providing critical information, linking people within
an organisation, and promoting a sense of community during difficult times. When sending
any message, a leader must make it very clear that the message includes only the most
important information to save team members’ time and frustration, because they are possibly
already inundated with both personal and professional messages. Communication has a
tremendous impact on cultivating relationships between team members, and leadership
messages often affect the relationship that each team member has with the organisation as
a whole. It is particularly relevant and beneficial for businesses with remote offices and team
members. Through keeping the organisational goals in mind and conversing in a clear,
understandable, and considerate manner on remote working calls, meetings and chats can
help boost a clear communication (Fast Company, 2020). Thus, the article concludes that
right now, in an unprecedented and sometimes scary period, the ability to maintain
communication when working from a distance is more critical than ever. The written word is
an influential ally when it comes to linking the organisational team and the broader
community. Business leaders should lead the communication in cultivating relations, while
companies as a whole must aim to communicate thoughtfully, consciously, and effectively.
Besides this, the more one focuses on the methods and style of communication, the more
they will figure out new ways to progress.
Journal Article
Communication Competence, Leadership Behaviors, and Employee Outcomes in
Supervisor-Employee Relationships
Summary of the selected journal article
The present journal article aims to investigate how supervisors participate in
communication competence and leadership behaviours and how these two factors contribute
to the outcomes of the employee. Competence in communication requires communication
efficiency, which is generally composed of characteristics of effectiveness and
appropriateness. Communication skills may be especially relevant in cases where there is
conflict or conflicting goals. Communication competence is found to be closely linked to
employee satisfaction. On the other hand, leadership refers to a mechanism by which an
individual controls a group of individuals in order to accomplish a shared goal. Leadership
behaviours have a major impact on how workers feel competitive, inspired, energised, and
dedicated to their work. It has been found that autocratic, authoritarian, and dictatorial
practices of leadership are extremely ineffectual. Nonetheless, the most successful types of
leadership are considered to be a blend of task and interpersonal relations-leadership
communication behaviours. Such two types of leadership are referred to as Team
Management as it places a heavy focus on both tasks and interpersonal relationships, and
this teamwork style of leadership has been associated with improved revenue, performance,
and communication flow between leaders and followers. In addition, work motivation,
satisfaction, and organisational commitment are found to be three significant outcomes for
workers that are found to be closely related to communication skills and leadership
behaviours (Mikkelson et al., 2015). Thus, the article concludes that it is advantageous and

valuable to have a supervisor having team management leadership style and competence
communication for the overall outcome of employees.
Discussion
Communication is the cycle whereby knowledge and understanding are transmitted
from one person to another. Communication happens formally, informally, or socially in
organisations (Turner et al., 2017). Similarly, communication also exists in remote job
environments. Good communication is vital for the growth of an organisation (Marlow et al.,
2017). Effective communication is very important for managers to perform basic
management functions, i.e., planning, coordinating, leading, and controlling, in the
organisation, as well as the digital working environment. Communication lets administrators
do their roles and accept their duties (Darling and Dannels, 2016). One reason many
organisations decline to produce anticipated results is due to the lack of
effective communications between managers or leaders and employees. Therefore, all
important information connected to organisational priorities and job tasks must be conveyed
to employees in an effective, considerate, transparent and precise manner to enable them to
execute tasks effectively to achieve objectives (Gut et al., 2017). Many companies are
working in digital work environments because of the nature of the business, such as
freelancing or because of certain unpredictable and pandemic circumstances such as
CONVID-19. Controlling without successful written and oral contact is not possible in this
form of settings. The written word is a strong ally in linking the organisational team and the
broader community and in promoting the interconnection (Fast Company, 2020). In addition
to this, competence communication and successful leadership style in organisational
workplace environments play a crucial role in fostering enthusiasm, satisfaction, and
engagement among employees that enables them to know how to enhance their
performance when it is not up to the standard (Mikkelson et al., 2015). Effective verbal,
nonverbal, spoken, and written communication is, therefore, a building block for any
productive business, regardless of whether the communication takes place in a formal, non-
formal, or social environment.
Mangers of businesses need to explore growing communication barriers, examine
the reasons for their presence, and take proactive measures to prevent those barriers. The
intensity of most of the issues can be mitigated. Effective communication took place through
multiple gateways, such as active listening, using similar codebooks, and choosing
appropriate communication medium, such as physical or interactive medium, which is
capable of engaging communicating parties in a shared understanding of the message
(Oetzel, 2017; Raciti and Dagger, 2018). As managers spend much of their time engaged in
communication, the innovation in communication technology has generated interest from
many managers and leaders in understanding different communication channels and finding
effective ways in communication within the organisation (Cascio and Montealegre, 2016).
The most suitable means of communication depends greatly on its social acceptance and
media richness (Bidin et al., 2016). Social acceptance refers to how well an organisation,
staff, and individuals embrace and endorse the communication medium (El-Shinnawy et al.,
2015). On the other hand, media richness refers to the capacity of a medium to process
useful information, providing immediate input and clarification of issues during interactions,
and expressing the personal emotions and feelings of the interacting parties. Each type of
medium does have its upsides and downsides, and in different circumstances, one is
possibly more suitable than the other. The more vague and unpredictable a task is, the
richer media format will fit the task (Liu et al., 2018). Therefore, effective written
communication, such as effective announcements and manuals, letters, policies, and digital
media such as e-mail, may be considered a rich media in remote working environments.
Face-to-face communication is nevertheless one of the best means of contact in
organisational settings.
Even though good communication is of critical importance, most organisations around the
world face numerous challenges with team communication problems that prevent working
teams from functioning efficiently. Some of the reasons why inappropriate communication
exists in remote work environments as well as in business workplace settings include failure

to listen, differences in culture, long distances, gaps in gender communication, weak written
communication, issues in the hierarchy, weak leadership style and limited information
(Hughes et al., 2015; Gut et al., 2017). In an attempt to combat these issues, however, the
grapevine is another informal medium of business communication that enhances productive
contact between companies, teams, and individuals. The rationale is that this medium of
contact spreads in all directions, regardless of the levels of authority in the organisation. This
enhances a corporate culture by establishing a sense of cohesion among the workers who
engage in secret correspondence and express their views with each other. Grapevine
communication, as a tool to cope with difficult circumstances, has also been correlated with
the advantages it brings. It is also very useful for those inside a company who are looking for
a shift and promotion. Besides several benefits, due to false word contact, the possible harm
to a company is substantial, and thus managers need to test and monitor staff (Banerjee and
Singh, 2015). Grapevine thus helps to establish cohesiveness within the community.
Therefore, a successful leader should develop informal communication and use it in a way
that benefits a company, regardless of whether it operates in a corporate workplace setting
or remote working environment.
Conclusion
The discussion above summarised a mainstream media article and a journal article
related to organisational communication. Both articles are interrelated and stress the
importance of effective communication among organisations, individuals, and teams. The
good written word communication has always been a strong ally in linking team and boost
connections at work. Communication of competence and task and interpersonal relation
leadership often contributes to the productive outcomes of the employees. Likewise, to
ensure effectiveness, it is also important to recognise the media richness and social
acceptance of a chosen means of communication. The more vague and unpredictable a task
is, the richer the media format fits the task.
Reflection
Since the fact that feedback is a critical part of the learning process is not denied. It
allows us to rectify errors and boost future results. Likewise, the input I got from assessment
3 proves to be very useful for me when completing this task. The explanation is that I took
the feedback as an encouragement to complete my task, and found it very valuable. The
feedback has fuelled my interest in gaining a deeper understanding of effective
communication, as it is of great importance in business. The feedback helped me in deciding
to search further on and read several media articles and journal articles for information, and
that eventually helped me complete this assigned mission. Besides this, I am now also
willing to attend lectures, workshops, and webinars on effective communication in order to
gain a deeper understanding. I strongly believe that Turner et al. (2017) stated in its readings
that the most challenging thing for organisations to deal with is communication in
organisational work settings as well as remote work settings. My point is clear that
organisations have to understand the value of verbal, non-verbal, spoken, and written
communication to function efficiently and effectively. The insight I learned from the feedback
and while working on this assignment is that competency communication and a combination
of the task- and interpersonal relations-leadership communication has a significant role in
achieving the best outcome of employees. In the end, I would like to conclude my reflection
by acknowledging that the feedback I got played a quite significant role in the successful
completion of this task.
