Part A- Leadership Philosophy
a) Analysis of Leadership Style
The style of leadership which is followed by me is “Democratic Leadership” wherein
I have involved others in the process of decision-making which assisted me in gaining more
knowledge on determining the project works. In the different projects which are performed
by us, in many cases, I was selected as the team leader, in such situations, I made sure that
communication is active in upward and downward direction as it included fairness, creativity,
honesty and intelligence. I always encouraged my team members in sharing their opinions
and ideas which has led to employee engagement and increased their morale.
b) Leadership Principles not Willing to Violate
There are certain principles of leadership which are being followed by me and I
cannot violate the same in any kind of circumstances that are described as follows:
Firstly, focusing on team building is the major aspect as the ethical type of leaders
helps in fostering the sense of community along with team spirit within the company. When
the ethical leaders try to achieve the goals, it is not regarding the personal goals, in such
scenarios, there are genuine efforts for achieving goals which will be benefitting the company
or the team and not just themselves.
Secondly, the respect for others is the other aspect or principle which is followed as
the ethical leaders show proper respect to all members in the team through listening to them
in an attentive manner. The ethical leader tries to maintain the principles wherein the
contributions of subordinates or the team members are being valued and they are generous in
considering the opposing viewpoints.

Lastly, there is encouragement of the different initiatives is the aspect wherein it
helps the employees in thriving and flourishing in such scenario. The ethical leaders try to
reward the different employees for generating innovative ideas and they are being praised for
taking the right steps at the right time and not waiting for others.
c) Impact of Personal Beliefs on Leadership Approach
According to me, the beliefs regarding leadership should be positive which needs to
include the inclusiveness and supportive aspects for nourishing leadership in yourself as well
as others. The supportive nourishing leadership is effective and it helps in achieving the goals
in an easy manner. Through proper and positive beliefs on leadership, it can be effective in
seeing the various possibilities for future and set a course for getting there. The different
personal beliefs are discussed as follows:
Firstly, the strong and efficient leadership aspects help in setting everyone up for
success which will suitable in achieving the goals.
Secondly, leadership is joyful and everyone has the leadership type of ability that can
be effective in achieving the successful results. The engaged employees are efficient in the
tasks performed by themselves as everyone has a skill of leadership inside them that
encourages them in managing their efficiency.
Lastly, leadership skills make useful and positive difference in the organizational
skills and it will be leading to the positive usage of power that encourages them in improving
the tasks performed by them and gain more insights on achieving goals successfully.
d) Key Experiences which informed Approach of Leadership
While studying in college, there have been different instances wherein professors tried
to make the groups among students for performing a task in a collective manner. Therefore,

in such instances, there were one particular incident in which I was selected as the leader and
under me, there were five members. The main aspect of the group assignment was to conduct
a survey among our professors in understanding their viewpoints regarding a particular online
application. In such scenario, we all worked as a team and I did not try to act as an autocratic
leader. As all the members were my classmates, I tried to implement the democratic
leadership aspect and, in this manner, it was being informed as well.
In the respective scenario, it helps in strengthening the relationships between the team
members of the team and we performed well and achieved the goals efficiently. I feel that
due to the incorporation of the democratic leadership approach, I understood the meaning of
delegation of proper responsibility among the team members for facilitating the participation
of the members in process of decision-making. In addition, the strong team was being built as
the members were supportive and strong and collective working has been done for fostering
the creative environment.
Lastly, with incorporation of the democratic leadership, it has worked in an excellent
manner for solving complex issues. From the respective team work, it can be seen that I have
been suitable in understanding the team building exercises which helped me in improving the
effectiveness in finding solutions to complex problems in an appropriate manner.
Part B- Application of Leadership Philosophy
a) Identification of Leadership Issue in Organization that Requires Leader to make
Critical Decisions
In the Uber Company, it has been noted that there are different cultural issues faced
by the employees and there has been different scandals that has been propelled in Uber and
due to the same, the culture of the company is in spotlight. In such scenario, the sexual
harassment has been reported to the HR of the company, however, the issues have not been

resolved due to which it affected the growth of the company in the market as well. From the
different surveys, it has been identified that the employees felt unsecured and the turnover of
the employees increased to a large extent. The main issue which has been seen in the case of
Uber is the lack of proper leadership approach (The Guardian.com 2019). However, the
behavioral intentions and expectations was negative due to which it affected the morale of the
employees.
b) Brief Overview of Issue and Contextualize
From the respective case of Uber, it can be seen and analyzed that there were different
shortcomings of the leadership and the issues related to the culture of the company. From the
reports published in different newspaper, it has been noticed that the CEO of the company
required leadership related help as he was not self-efficient in handling such core issues.
From the analysis of the leadership issue of Uber, it can be seen that the CEO followed the
Laissez-Faire Leadership that proved to be most inappropriate style and it affected the
performance of the company negatively. The Laissez Faire Leadership is a French Term
which means Let Them Do, and the same has been applied by leader of Uber which meant
that he was not capable of taking into consideration the different steps in solving the issue of
sexual harassment.
In addition, it has been mentioned that there were different complaints from the
customers of Uber wherein they faced such issues from drivers and they did not feel safe. In
the service industry, the employees and the customers are the main asset of the company and
they should be treated in a proper manner as well. Moreover, in case of Uber company, the
leaders and the CEO of the company considered the matter lightly and they did not take any
steps in managing the issue. The main effects of the issue led to the turnover among the

different employees and the strong and loyal base of customers were affected as customers
preferred the other services instead of the same as they did not feel safe.
From the reports, it can be seen that Kalanick needs to be open, willing as well as able
to work on himself and develop the emotional, social along with human intelligence in
handling the situation effectively. Proper implementation of the democratic leadership could
have improved the situation and it would have been successful in providing the solution for
the different complex problems. On the other hand, the new CEO of the company and the
board members, it was being noticed that dead honesty needs to be improved as the
profitability of the company depends on the different aspects of the leader as he/she has the
capability to improve the turnover of the business and gain profitability.
c) Justification of Decisions in Handling Situation in Situation of Issue which has been
Identified
From the analysis of the situation of Uber’s cultural issues and lack of proper
leadership approaches, it can be seen that there was lack of proper leadership skills that
affected the growth of the company negatively. I feel that if I was in the respective position of
the CEO of Uber, I would have followed the democratic leadership approach that would have
helped me in making effective decisions and it is exactly what it sounds like. In case of
democratic leadership approach, it can be seen that the leaders make and take care of the
different decisions which are being made in the company and due to the same, it allows the
lower-level employees in taking proper authority in managing decisions and showcase their
views (Schaveling and van Vugt 2016).
The respective issue which was found in Uber was seen that the leadership style was
not appropriate and due to which it affected the profitability of the company. In such
scenario, I would have handled the situation in a different manner. Firstly, I would have tried

to understand the entire situation, the problems which have been faced by the employees and
customers and analyse the respective situation appropriately. For example- While conducting
the meeting with the employees and other subordinates, there can be different viewpoints that
can be shared by employees, in such scenario, I would have provided them with the chance to
share their thoughts. It would have made them feel that they are important and their values
are being felt important in process of decision-making in the company as well (Rehman et al.
2018).
After the entire discussion, the thoughts of the different members would have been
taken into consideration, but the final decision would have been mine as I feel that as I am the
leader, I have the right to take the right decisions for the entire organization and employees in
a suitable manner. It is suggested to be the most effective proper style of leadership that could
have been effective in handling the situation and give the employees and customers with
proper and efficient solutions in solving the issue in a proper manner. I feel that the
democratic leadership is the appropriate style which will be helpful in creating and fostering
the creative work environment that will be nurturing the inputs provided by the employees
and the company will be succeeding in providing support to the different team members
sustainably (Nawaz and Khan 2016).
In case of Uber, if the CEO and the other board members of the company would have
followed the effective style of leadership, there could have been sustainable growth and
improvement of the ability in succeeding under pressure as well. The motivation and
improvement of morale are the two major aspects which needs to be maintained by the
companies as to influence the behaviour of the individuals and voluntarily allow them to
work towards achieving the goals sustainably and make the company profitable and earn high
level of revenues. The embracement of change is the key element that is suitable in making
decisive decisions and be inspirational in nature in becoming empathetic in nature.

From the entire analysis of the leadership approaches, it can be concluded that the
leadership is one of the most suitable aspects which needs to be incorporated in the different
business organizations for improving the business operations and there will be cooperation
between the employees and employers which will be delivering appropriate solutions. It is
considered to be the most important function which assists in maximising the efficiency and
achieve the organizational goals successfully. Through proper leadership styles and skills, the
guidance is provided that instructs subordinates in the manner when they have been able to
perform the tasks efficiently and appropriately. As a successful leader, it is mandatory for the
CEO and the board members of the company to understanding the difficult situation in which
the company is facing and make necessary changes for improving the effectiveness.
